Over half a century behind bars for the men who sexually abused a young girl

A victim who was subjected to six years of sexual abuse by a gang of four men has today thanked police – as her abusers were today jailed for a total of 53 years.

The vulnerable woman had been abused by the men when she was a child after a man offered her to them in return for cigarettes and alcohol.

She was abused on a number of occasions over a period of six years but it wasn’t until she was an adult that she bravely contacted police.

The abusers were charged with a host of sexual offences and in May they were found guilty of a total of 37 counts of sexual assaults, including multiple rapes.

Lead investigator Detective Jaclyn Younger was in court on behalf of the victim today (Monday) to hear Judge…. put the four men behind bars for 53 years.

Colin Ankers, 45, of Waterville Road, North Shields was found guilty of 14 counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault and was sentenced to 21 years

Philip Taylor, 60, of Whiteley Avenue, Sowerby, West Yorkshire was found guilty of three counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault and was sentenced to 17 years.

Darren Smith, 36, of Irene Avenue, Stoke-on-Trent was found guilty of five counts of rape and five counts of indecent assault and was sentenced to six years.

Paul Cavner, 55, of Crofton Street, Blyth was found guilty of one count of rape and one count of indecent assault. He was found not guilty of one other count of indecent assault. He was sentenced to nine years.

In a statement read out in court, the victim said she “didn’t know any different” during the abuse but she has called on other victims to report abuse to police.

She said: “The trial has been very difficult for me but it’s the closure that I need to be able to move on with my life. I have had to do this for me and I am proud of myself.

“My childhood was taken at the age of nine when Colin Ankers began to groom me and stole my childhood. Out of all of the men who abused me, Colin Ankers was the worst.

“He had a hold over me, very controlling and has destroyed me the most. The abuse has affected my adult relationships with men. I have never been happy and settled, I have been used as a sex toy, a punch bag, a victim of abuse.

“I didn’t know any different, I didn’t know what was and what wasn’t acceptable. I had no confidence, no self-esteem and beatings were normal. I have done this for me and only me so I can move on.”

Four men found guilty of ‘heinous and wicked’ sexual abuse of young girl

A woman who was sexually abused as a child after someone she knew offered her to other men in return for money and cigarettes has finally seen justice.

The victim had her childhood blighted by being brutally raped and sexually assaulted over six years.

Now she has finally seen justice after four men have been found guilty of multiple historic rapes and indecent assaults.

On Friday a jury at Newcastle Crown Court found the men guilty of a total of 37 counts which occurred over a period of six years.

The abuse committed by:

  • Colin Ankers, 45, of Waterville Road, North Shields ;

  • Philip Taylor, 60, of Whiteley Avenue, Sowerby, West Yorkshire;

  • Darren Smith, 36, of Irene Avenue, Stoke-on-Trent;

  •  Paul Cavner, 55, of Crofton Street, Blyth 

The four men had denied the charges against them but was described as ‘heinous and wicked’ by the judge.

Northumbria Police say a man who was known to the victim at the time would offer her to the other men for sexual purposes in return for money, cigarettes and alcohol.

  • Ankers was found guilty of 14 counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault.

  • Taylor was found guilty of three counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault.

  • Smith was found guilty of five counts of rape and five counts of indecent assault.

  • Cavner was found guilty of one count of rape and one count of indecent assault. 

Judge Tim Gittins said: “You have been convicted of heinous and wicked crimes against the victim. You will be produced at court on July 18 where you will receive substantial prison sentences but in the meantime will be remanded in custody.”

Grooming gang members who raped 12-year-old girl jailed for 27 years

Grooming gang members who sexually abused a 12-year-old girl have been sentenced to a collective 27 years in prison.

In May Mohammed Akram and Usman Khalid were found guilty of sexual abuse following a three week trial at Leeds Crown Court.

Their target was picked up by a grooming gang at the age of just 11 and was raped numerous times over a number of years.

She was 12 when Akram, 33, sexually abused her for the first time, with 31-year-old Khalid’s single assault of the girl happening when she was the same age.

Khalid was sentenced to five years and Akram 22 years, to run concurrently to the 17 year sentence he was already serving.

The pair are the latest to be jailed following investigations by West Yorkshire Police as part of Operation Tendersea

Between January and October last year 20 men were convicted and locked up for a total of 257 years for crimes that took place between 2004 and 2011.

Fifteen girls were targeted.

Prosecutor Richard Wright QC said the girl was particularly vulnerable, having been taken away from her drug addicted mother and put in care.

The first man to target her was Zahid Hassan – known locally as Little Manny – who is currently serving an 18 year sentence for multiple rapes.

Akram stood trial over the crime having already been imprisoned for 17 years for two counts of trafficking for sexual exploitation and two counts of rape in relation to two victims.

In May he was also found guilty of trafficking for sexual exploitation, abduction, rape of a child under the age of 13 and three counts of rape, with his argument that he believed the girl was 18 failing to convince jurors.

He was acquitted on one count of rape.

Khalid was found guilty of one count of sexual assault.

Despicable rapist and sex abuser pal convicted as part of investigation into Huddersfield grooming gang

A long-running investigation into child sexual exploitation in Huddersfield has resulted in eight more convictions.

Two men have been convicted of child sex offences including rape and abduction of a child following a three-week trial.

Two men have been convicted of child sex offences including rape and abduction of a child following a three-week trial.

It can now be reported that the trial was the latest in West Yorkshire Police’s Operation Tendersea investigation.

Throughout January to October last year, the investigation seen 20 men convicted and jailed for a total of 257 years.

Mohammed Akram was one of those 20 men – he had been convicted of two counts of trafficking for sexual exploitation and two counts of rape in relation to two victims.

He was just five months into his 17-year prison sentence when he returned to the dock to stand trial in relation to Girl N’s allegations.

It was the third trial that Girl N has given evidence in, on top of multiple police interviews over the years.

She was subjected to seven hours of cross-examination by Akram’s barrister Abbas Lakha QC, as well as giving her evidence-in-chief and being cross-examined by three further defence teams.

The men will be sentenced on June 21.

Verdicts

A jury of seven women and five men took 12 hours and 56 minutes to reach verdicts in relation to the two male defendants.

Akram, also known as Kid, was unanimously found guilty of rape of a child under the age of 13, three counts of rape, abduction of a child and trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The 33-year-old, of Springdale Street, Huddersfield, was also found guilty of sexual assault by a majority of 11-1.

He was acquitted of one count of rape.

Usman Khalid, also known as Gujji, 31, of Brook Street, Huddersfield, was found guilty of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13 by a majority of 11-1.

Minutes later, jurors returned to the courtroom and declared that they were unable reach a verdict in relation to the men’s co-accused – Shahnaz Malik, 57, of St Anne’s Avenue, Huddersfield, and Naveeda Habeeb, 40, of Prince Wood Lane, Huddersfield, who were both charged with child cruelty.

This morning (Tuesday), the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced its decision not to proceed with a re-trial and the child cruelty charges were left to lie on the file.

Reporting of the verdicts was banned overnight while the CPS came to a decision.

At the age of 11, Girl N was groomed by takeaway worker Zahid Hassan, also known as Little Manny.

Prosecutor Richard Wright QC said the victim was initially vulnerable because her mother was a drug addict and she was later taken into care.

She was sexually abused by multiple men, including Hassan, Akram, Khalid and Akram’s protégé Mansoor Akhtar.

Mohammed Irfraz also abducted and trafficked her for other men to exploit.

Akram, Hassan and Irfraz abducted her from a children’s home.

Akram repeatedly raped her in a house a few years later.

During Akram’s trial, she told the court: “The whole care system let me down from the age of 11 years old.”

She also gave evidence that the police broke down the door of a house while she was being abused by Akhtar and on another occasion found her covered in blood in a house with Akram and other older men.

Hassan, now aged 30, previously of Bland Street, Lockwood, Huddersfield, was convicted of abusing her and is currently serving an 18-year prison sentence.

Akhtar, nicknamed Boy, now aged 27, previously of Blackmoorfoot Road, Crosland Moor, Huddersfield, was convicted of rape of a child under 13, attempted rape and two counts of trafficking for sexual exploitation and is currently serving a 14-year prison sentence.

Irfraz, nicknamed Faj, now aged 30, previously of Northfield Avenue, Lockwood, Huddersfield, was convicted of one count of abduction of a child and two counts of trafficking for sexual exploitation and is currently serving a six-year prison sentence.

Operation Tendersea is an ongoing investigation.

DCI Richard McNamara, of Kirklees District Police, said: “We welcome the verdicts and convictions of these men for their despicable crimes.

“This investigation in Kirklees has been extremely sensitive and complex and we are pleased that these convictions have been secured for the victim.

“I would like to praise the victim for her courage in coming forward and firstly disclosing the offences, then going on to bravely give evidence.

“I hope the outcome of this trial will enable her to start to put this trauma behind her and reassure any other potential victims that we will treat them with the utmost sensitivity and take positive action against perpetrators.

“Child sexual exploitation is one of the most important challenges facing the police and is a top priority for West Yorkshire Police.”

The victims are referred to as girls A-O instead of by their names as they are entitled to lifelong anonymity.

Paedophile sentenced to further 12 years for additional offences – Berkhamsted

A paedophile has been sentenced to a further 12 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to additional sexual offences against children.

Michael Emerton, aged 34, from Berkhamsted, appeared before St Albans Crown Court via video link on Wednesday, May 1.

He had pleaded guilty to two charges of conspiring to rape a child aged five to eight, and two charges of conspiring to have sexual activity with a child aged five to eight.

The court heard that on separate occasions between November 2015 and October 2016, Emerton had engaged in conversations with two men on Skype, discussing fees for a number of sexual acts to be performed on a young male victim.

The cases against the other two men allegedly involved in the conspiracy with Emerton were initially dismissed at court, but are now under review. The victim has been identified and is now safeguarded.

Emerton was given a 12 year sentence for the two conspiracy to rape offences and a four year sentence for the conspiracy to commit sexual activity offences, both of which will run concurrently to the previous sentences he is already serving.

Investigators from Hertfordshire’s Child Online Safeguarding Team (COST) exposed these offences as part of Operation Pendent, an investigation that uncovered a sickening worldwide paedophile ring led by Emerton. The inquiry was the largest of its kind ever conducted by the force.

As a result, in December 2017 Emerton was handed nine and a half life sentences. Emerton had streamed live footage of children being abused while also committing sexual acts in front of them.

Paedophile ring boss admits more crimes

A paedophile already serving 10 life sentences has admitted more child abuse charges.

Michael Emerton, 34, admitted two charges of conspiring to rape a child and two counts of conspiring to have sexual activity with a child.

St Albans Crown Court heard the crimes came to light after further police investigation of chat rooms and websites he used.

Emerton, of Berkhamstead, was jailed in 2017 for operating a paedophile ring.

Judge Michael Kay gave him jail terms of 12 and four years to run alongside his existing sentences.

The judge said: “The sense of shock one feels is beyond words.”

Emerton was given life sentences in December 2017 after admitting 20 offences related to running a paedophile ring that saw him organise abuse with other men via dating apps.

He arranged the live streaming of abuse via a video link and, on other occasions, arranged to meet men and take part in sex acts in front of children.

During his previous sentencing, Judge Michael Kay QC said the case was “so shocking” it “undermines one’s faith in humanity”.

“Never before have I read a police summary of a case which begins with a warning that the reader should be very wary of the content due to the abhorrent nature of the offending,” he said.

The six other men of the ring were:

  • Paul Stevens, 54, of St Albans, admitted conspiracy to rape a child under 13 and conspiracy to commit sexual activity with a child under 13 and was jailed for 10 years.

  • Matthew Webby, 30, of Hemel Hempstead, admitted two counts of sexual activity with a child, conspiracy to rape a child, conspiracy to commit sexual activity with a child, and possession of indecent images of children, and was jailed for nine years.

  • Robert Lindsay, 39, of Markyate, Hertfordshire, admitted conspiracy to rape a child, conspiracy to commit sexual activity with a child, making indecent images of a child, and to causing or inciting the child sexual exploitation of a 17-year-old, and was jailed for five years and three months.

  • Simon Wintle, 44, of Hemel Hempstead, admitted sexual activity in the presence of a child and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child and was jailed for two years and six months.

  • David Overall, 44, of Stevenage, admitted distributing and downloading indecent photographs of children and was sentenced to two years.

  • Thomas Perry, 28, from Northchurch, Hertfordshire was jailed for 14 years for conspiracy to rape a child under the age of 13, conspiracy to commit sexual activity with a child under 13 and causing a child to watch a sexual act.

‘I wanna be a proper perv’… sick online chats of pervert who swapped jokes with one of Britain’s worst paedophiles

A pervert who swapped sick jokes online with one of Britain’s worst paedophiles about his repeated rape of a baby is now behind bars.

Mark Hatch, 37, exchanged shocking messages with 31-year old Robin Hollyson during which Hollyson sent film of himself sexually abusing the five-month-old boy.

During the exchanges, Hatch from Middleton, gloated about watching the explicit video and said: ”God love being a pedo with other nasty pedo pervs.”

In one message he told IT expert Hollyson: “You get plenty of perv action. Me and you together – can’t wait. I wanna become a proper perv”.

During his responses Hollyson, from Luton, told Hatch: ”His 2nd birthday will be a free for all.”

The youngster was subsequently raped by two other friends of Hollyson.

The horrifying chat log which took place between October 2013 and March 2014 was found on Hatch’s i-Phone, laptop and an i-Pad when police raided his home in June 2016 following an investigation into a paedophile ring run by Hollyson.

In other messages Hatch had told Hollyson he had an interest to “stalking young lads and pick one out to catch and rape.” More than 100 indecent images were found on Hatch’s computer.

At Manchester Crown Court, Hatch admitted encouraging Hollyson to commit sex offences, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and distributing indecent images and was jailed for six years and eight months.

Hollyson was jailed for 24 years in September 2015 for conspiracy to rape but hanged himself in jail the following January.

He had been one of the masterminds behind a gang of seven paedophiles who raped babies, toddlers and pre-school children and streamed the abuse over the internet.

The court heard Hatch had engaged in various conversations with Hollyson via Skype and all related to the baby.

During the chats Hollyson admitted previously abusing the boy, and Hatch asked for pictures following which he made a series of grotesquely explicit remarks.

When Hatch failed to attend a meeting, Hollyson referred to booking a ”hotel full of pervs” and said: “didn’t you fancy a shot at his cherry” and Hatch replied “Of course I do”.

When told Hollyson had formed a paedophile ring to abuse the child, Hatch replies “what you gonna take him for a group abuse sesh?…WOW. I want to get in a ring…I want to see you on cam with the little ‘un”.

Inquiries revealed Hollyson had invited Hatch to a meeting so he could rape the baby – but Hatch had declined saying he had a job interview.

The court heard Hatch had also had a sexualised online conversation with a 14 year old boy from the USA during which the lad was asked to strip in front of a webcam. He also claimed to have assaulted a boy aged 12 at Stockport bus station and abused another boy aged just eight.

In a chat with another paedophile, Hatch said: “I wanna get real f..kin pervy m8 f..k a yng kid up rape him at knifepoint snuff the lil c..t…yeah m8, luv to watch a snuff wiv anova guy as never seen one then go out kidnap sum kid then re-enact it…I know I’d get off on it”.

Prosecutor Mr Alaric Bassano said: ”There were a total of 21 online chats with 21 different males from 2012 – 2015.

”In the course of these conversations the defendant made explicit revelations about depraved sexual and violent acts he wanted to commit or wanted to see committed against children. He expressed a wish to watch young children being raped and to rape young children himself.

”In several chats this included raping toddlers and babies, including new born babies and he expressed an interest in joining a paedophile ring. In three chats the defendant said he would like to see and even commit “rape and snuff” however the Crown accepts in these conversations he was engaging in sexual and violent fantasies without an intention or belief that the acts would be carried out.

”His offending also fell short of conspiracy. He declined all invitations to attend to commit substantive offences against the child or to aid and abet others to do so at the scene and he did not assist in the commission of such offences. Hollyson evidently needed little or no encouragement.

”However the defendant was made aware that Hollyson had raped and was intending to gang rape the baby. He could have alerted the police to protect the boy from further harm. Instead, he chose to wilfully encourage the very offences which Hollyson and others went on to commit, believing that this would be so.”

Sentencing Judge Stuart Driver QC told Hatch: “The content on your devices show you to be a man with a deep seated sexual interest in young and very young boys. You fantasised about raping them and subjecting them to violence, you said you would like to join a paedophile ring.”

“You received a video of Hollyson actually raping the baby yet your response was complete approval. You encouraged him to do it again, to do more to rape and to arrange what you called a group abuse session. After your criminal encouragement Hollyson went on to arrange the rape of the same child by the two other men.”

“However it is important that this court keeps in perspective, the fact that Hollyson would have gone on to commit those offences without your encouragement – and you declined repeatedly invitations to travel to meet him.”

“Nevertheless the fact that you knew this man had raped that child and you encouraged further rapes and believed that that would happen, you encouraged those terrible crimes. You will require professional help to deal with your sexual impulses which were so deep rooted back then that one can only imagine that they still exist and will continue for the rest of your life.”

Hatch was also made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order which will ban him from using the internet and using any device which can be used for cloud storage. He is also prohibited from contacting anyone under 16.

Derby man jailed for sex offences against schoolgirls

A man has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison following an investigation into sexual offences against schoolgirls in Derby.

Mosab Alamin, 29, of Pear Tree Road, Derby was charged with sexual activity with a child and pleaded guilty to offences against young teenage girls on December 20, 2018.

Warrants were carried out in April 2018 at two addresses and 11 men were arrested for a number of offences.

As well as his sentence, Alamin also received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register.
