Court hears of 12-year-old grooming gang victim’s terror as five more ‘vile and wicked’ abusers jailed

Five men who sexually exploited young girls in Huddersfield have been given jail sentences of up to 14 years by a judge who said their abuse was “vile and wicked” and “defies understanding”.

A total of 27 men have now been convicted following West Yorkshire Police’s Operation Tendersea investigation into child sexual exploitation in the town, with prison sentences totaling more than 300 years.

Today Judge Geoffrey Marson QC told the five men convicted last week: “The way these girls were treated defies understanding.

“This abuse was vile and wicked. None of you has expressed any remorse for what you did.”

Jailing one 32-year-old defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, for 14 years, Judge Marson said: “You took the virginity of a particularly vulnerable 12-year-old and left her bleeding on the floor in the park.”

He said this defendant also subjected another teenage girl to a “campaign of rape”, abusing her on a regular basis in a Huddersfield park, using sleeping pills to subdue her.

The five men were convicted after the end of the fifth trial relating to Operation Tendersea.

They were jailed for a total of 45 years, bringing the combined jail sentences after the five trials to 312 years.

Judge Marson told Leeds Crown Court that Operation Tendersea involved “a large number of men, principally Asian men”, who have been charged in relation to “the grooming and sexual abuse of a large number of children”.

The judge described how vulnerable girls were plied with drugs and alcohol and passed between men in Huddersfield.

He said they thought they were being shown genuine affection but this was an illusion “deliberately created to enable predatory men to perpetrate gross sexual abuse for their own perverted gratification”.

Judge Marson described how one terrified 12-year-old was targeted by the men who used her phone to locate her despite attempts to move her.

He said: “One night the house phone rang and a man asked for the girl and said ‘tell her I want to f*** her’.

“After three days the girl was moved to another foster carer in another city and again she was quickly located.

“There were repeated calls from Asian men saying ‘can you tell her we want to f*** her’.

“The girl was absolutely terrified and said that if the carer gave the sim card to the police ‘they will find me and kill me’.”

Umar Zaman, 31, and Samuel Fikru, 32, of William Street, Huddersfield, were each jailed for eight years on Friday after they were convicted of two counts of rape.

The court heard that Zaman has absconded and is believed to be in Pakistan.

A 32-year-old man convicted of five counts of rape was jailed for 14 years. Another 32-year-old found guilty of a single count of rape was jailed for eight years, and a 38-year-old man found guilty of attempted rape was jailed for seven years.

Their names cannot be reported for legal reasons.

A sixth defendant, Banaris Hussain, 36, also of William Street, was convicted of one count of rape, and will be sentenced on Monday.

Four members of a grooming gang sentenced

Four members of a grooming gang that sexually abused girls as young as 12 in Manchester have been jailed.

A court heard that the men met victims in a park and then targeted them in the Levenshulme area and using social media between 2016 and 2018.

A judge said other perpetrators linked to the group, who are Romanian, have fled abroad and were being sought by police.

Brothers Sebastian and Ilie Baltatu targeted the youngest victim alongside friend Parizian Calin.

Parizian’s cousin, Adrian Calin, was also part of the group and was jailed for inciting a 15-year-old girl into sexual activity.

The abuse was exposed when the first victim, who was in care, alerted police and child services in 2018.

Greater Manchester Police started an operation that identified at least two further victims, who were between the ages of 12 and 15 at the time of the abuse.

Sentencing the men on Monday, Judge Suzanne Goddard QC, called their actions “heartless, immoral and illegal”.

“Each of these girls was particularly vulnerable because of their personal circumstances as children in care who had all had difficult childhoods,” she told Manchester Crown Court.

“Each had to move away from Manchester, away from their family and friends, because of the behaviour of you and others like you. That has added to the distress they suffered.”

The court heard that the first victim, who was 12 at the time, met the group at Crowcroft Park in longsight.

Parizian, a 20-year-old father, raped the girl in some bushes and then “made her available to others”.

He also took her to what she described as a “brothel house” in Levenshulme, where he then sent another Romanian man into the room.

Prosecutors said the girl was moved away from Manchester by authorities after they recognised she was at risk from sexual exploitation, but when she returned to the city aged 14 Parizian saw her, ordered her into his car and raped her again.

He was convicted of four counts of raping a child under 13, raping a second victim aged 14, arranging the commission of a child sex offence, inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity and assault of a child.

Parizian, of Slade Lane in Levenshulme, was jailed for 13 years, made to sign the sex offenders register for life and subjected to a 13-year sexual prevention order.

His friend Sebastian Baltatu, 18, was found guilty of raping a girl on a bench in Crowcroft Park when she was 12 and he was 14.

A defence lawyer told the court that Sebastian had himself been “exploited” by other members of the group, and had been influenced by his older brother’s attitude towards women.

Sebastian has a child and partner, who he persuaded to smuggle cannabis into prison after being jailed for an unrelated dangerous driving offence.

He was sentenced to three years in a young offenders institution and made to sign the sex offenders register for life.

His brother Ilie “Danny” Baltatu, 22, pleaded guilty to grooming, three counts of sexual activity with a child and abduction of a 13-year-old girl, and incitement and sexual assault of another victim aged 12.

The court heard he sent “numerous” text messages asking the first victim for oral sex over a period of months, while posing as the “nice guy” of the group.

His second victim was another girl in care who had been introduced to the gang through friends, and believed she was Ilie’s girlfriend after being groomed.

He was served a child abduction notice to prevent the abuse in October 2017 but continued to see the teenager.

Ilie was jailed for eight years, put on the sex offenders register indefinitely and subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.

Parizian’s cousin, 20-year-old Adrian Calin, was convicted of inciting a third victim who was 15 at the time to have oral sex in the park.

Jailing him for a year, Judge Goddard said the girl was also in care following a troubled childhood, and suffered from communication problems.

The judge told Adrian, of Reynell Road in Levenshulme: “I find that you all knew of the sexual exploitation that was occurring with girls at Crowcroft Park among your group of friends. You would have known these were underage girls.”

A probation officer told the court that Adrian, who has three children, had a “sense of sexual entitlement and a lack of respect in your relationships with women”.

Prosecutors said the men had deliberately targeted and groomed the victims because they were underage and vulnerable.

Paedophile trolled victims online

A paedophile, who was jailed for ten years for abusing young girls in Rotherham, has had another 45 months added to his sentence after admitting trolling his victims online by pretending to be an investigative journalist and making threats from prison to police officers investigating his case.

Waseem Khaliq, 35, set up a fake Facebook account and used it in an attempt to intimidate the girl and undermine her evidence.

He also made a threatening phone call from prison, telling officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) who were investigating him that he knew where they lived.

Khaliq was convicted of child abduction and indecent assault at Sheffield Crown Court last month as part of the long running Operation Stovewood investigation into sexual abuse and exploitation in Rotherham.

But after he was charged, Khaliq set up a fake Facebook account using the name, Andros Simpson, and used it to troll one of his victims.

Claiming to be an investigative journalist, who was looking into what happened in Rotherham, he claimed the victim was lying and said she was only giving evidence because she had been offered cash and a new house.

He also used the account to contact a number of associates of the victim in an attempt to intimidate her and prevent her from giving evidence.

Investigators from the National Crime Agency contacted Facebook and had the account closed down, but Khaliq continued to post comments on other accounts.

The intimidation only stopped when he was remanded into custody in March this year.

But while he was awaiting his trial, Khaliq contacted two NCA investigators telling one he knew where they lived and warning the other he was close to finding out his address.

He also told them he hoped they died of cancer or AIDS.

A man has been jailed for 18 years for indecently assaulting three young girls in Rotherham almost 20 years ago.

Mohammed Ahsan, 35, had previously pleaded guilty to three offences at Sheffield Crown Court.

On Friday 20 September a judge at the same court sentenced him for the attacks, which took place between 1999 and 2001.

A member of a grooming gang who sexually abused eight young girls is a convicted murderer with a history of violence against women

Mohammed Ahsen (35) was jailed for life in March 2006 for the murder of 19-year-old club-goer Kimberly Fuller, who he stabbed at the Escape nightclub in Ship Hill four months earlier.

Ahsen admitted three counts of indecent assault at the start of the trial of six other men, which concluded last month with guilty verdicts on 20 counts including rape, indecent assault and child abduction.

The sentences mean more than 500 years of prison terms have been imposed on defendants in trials relating to Operation Clover and Operation Stovewood, the two major investigations sparked by the damning Jay report in 2014.

Ahsen, formerly of Finlay Road in Eastwood, knifed Thorpe Hesley care worker Kimberly after she accused him of touching her bottom.

He was ordered to serve a minimum of 19 years — later reduced to 17.

Ahsen — aged 21 and married at the time — had dropped the knife on a staircase as he left Escape and went to another club with a friend.

Kimberly had surgery on a three-inch wound to her neck at Rotherham Hospital but doctors were unable to save her.

At the 2006 sentencing in Sheffield, Judge Roger Keen branded Ahsen — previously jailed for threatening a former partner with a knife — “bad tempered, vicious and violent towards people, particularly women”.

The court heard that Kimberly’s last words to her mother were: “Mum, stop worrying. I’m 19 now.”

Her family later campaigned for airport-style metal detectors and scanners in nightclubs and backed a nationwide knife amnesty.

Five years prior to murdering Kimberly, when Ahsen was aged between 16 and 18, he indecently assaulted three girls aged under 16 in Rotherham and Maltby.

He admitted the offences this year after being charged by the National Crime Agency as part of their investigation into child abuse.

He was also charged with raping a Sheffield schoolgirl twice between 2000 and 2001 — but these charges were not progressed by the NCA after the alleged victim was found dead last year.

A court order made by Judge Michael Slater at the outset of the latest trial barred the press from reporting on Ahsen’s case, with no time-frame given when this would be lifted.

The Advertiser successfully applied for this restriction to be lifted after the outcome of the trial of six other men.

Following last month’s latest convictions, which saw five men sentenced to a total of 63 years, the overall jail time handed down to 38 defendants is 529 years and three months, including concurrent terms.

And this will rise when Ahsen and another defendant whose sentences were adjourned last month are dealt with.

Since the conclusion of the first Operation Clover trial in February 2016, only one defendant has been handed a suspended prison sentence and only three have pleaded guilty to all of their charges.

Rotherham grooming gang: Judge attacks ‘indifferent’ authorities as five more men jailed for sexually abusing girls

Five more members of grooming gangs that sexually abused girls in Rotherham have been jailed by a judge who attacked the “indifference” of authorities who failed to protect their victims.

Aftab Hussain, 40, was jailed for 24 years for rape and indecent assault and Abid Saddiq, 38, was jailed for 20 years by a judge who described him as a “cunning and determined sexual predator”.

Saddiq had been found guilty of two rapes, five indecent assaults and two child abductions.

Masaued Malik, 35, was jailed for five years for indecent assault and Sharaz Hussain, 35, was handed a four-year prison sentence for the same offence.

Another 35-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was jailed for 10 years for indecent assault and child abduction.

Mohammed Ashan, who pleaded guilty to three indecent assault charges before the trial began, will be sentenced at a later date alongside a seventh man.

The group abused seven victims, who were all under 16 at the time, after plying them with alcohol and drugs between 1998 and 2002.

Judge Michael Slater said he was “quite satisfied” that relevant authorities were well aware of the way vulnerable teenagers were being targeted at the time.

He told the court that officials were at best “totally ineffectual” and, at worst “wholly indifferent”.

“Nothing I can say to you can restore those childhoods of which you were so cruelly deprived by the actions of these defendants and others,” Judge Slater told the victims.

He said he was “particularly concerned” to hear that victims “expressed feelings of shame, guilt and self-loathing in relation to what happened to her and by extension to her family”.

The defendants are the latest group of offenders jailed as part of Operation Stovewood, which continues to investigate the sexual exploitation of girls in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.

A total of 20 men have so far been convicted and the National Crime Agency (NCA) vowed to continue the investigation, which has so far identified 190 suspects and engaged with 313 alleged victims out of an estimated 1,500.

A five-week trial at Sheffield Crown Court heard the abusers knew the girls were underage and lacking in confidence.

The men would regularly park outside the girls’ schools to engage them in conversation, or hang around at the local park, bus station or in Rotherham town centre waiting for young girls to approach.

The NCA said the victims were “vulnerable and craving attention and love” when they were targeted to become sexual objects for the group.

They believed sex was a price for friendship with the older men and did not realise they were being groomed and exploited at the time.

The girls were given alcohol and drugs, belittled and passed around the group to be abused in Rotherham and the surrounding areas. 

“If the girls didn’t comply with the men’s sexual demands, they turned violent and the power exerted over the girls became more apparent,” the NCA said.

“They were given drugs and alcohol and often raped by multiple offenders and they felt obliged to comply.”

One victim said in a statement read to the court: “They took my childhood away.”

Judge Slater the women should be praised for the “incredible resolve and bravery” they showed to bring the men to justice, and how they “stood up to ensure that what happened to her should never happened to young girls in the future”.

Kate Hurst, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said the defendants knew the girls were vulnerable or underage when they abused them.

“They were reckless and did not care if they were children or not,” she added.

“Some of the men used threats of violence and they often had sex with these children while they were drunk or high on drugs. They tried to deny their responsibility claiming that the victims were lying or that they did not know they were underage.”

A further trial is due to go ahead in February 2020 for four defendants accused of 12 offences including rape and indecent assault.

The other abusers jailed as part of Operation Stovewood so far are Riaz Mahmood, Sajid Ali, Zaheer Iqbal, Asghar Bostan, Khuram Javed, Tony Chapman, Darren Hyett, Mohammed Imran Ali Akhtar, Nabeel Kurshid, Iqlak Yousaf, Tanweer Ali, Salah Ahmed El-Hakam, Asif Ali, and a 40-year-old man.

Six men found guilty of 20 CSE offences in Rotherham abuse trial

A gang of six men who abused and exploited vulnerable girls in Rotherham in the late 1990s and early 2000s has been convicted of multiple child sexual offences.

Aftab Hussain (40), Abid Saddiq (38), Masaued Malik (35), Sharaz Hussain (35) and two men who cannot be named for legal reasons, preyed on the vulnerability of the schoolgirls and their “need to be loved”.

The men were convicted on 20 counts by a jury of six men and six women at Sheffield Crown Court today (Wednesday) after almost two days of deliberation following a six-week trial.

They were remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Friday morning.

Abid Saddiq (38), of HMP Doncaster and formerly of Walter Street, Masbrough, has been found guilty of two counts of rape, four counts of indecent assault and two counts of child abduction (jointly charged with Defendant 6). He was cleared of one count of indecent assault.

Sharaz Hussain (35), of Fitzwilliam Road, Eastwood, has been found guilty of four counts of indecent assault against two girls in 2002.

Masaued Malik (35), of HMP Doncaster, has been found guilty of three counts of indecent assault against two girls between 1999 and 2002.

Aftab Hussain (40), of HMP Doncaster and formerly of York Road, Rotherham, has been found guilty of two counts of indecent assault against one girl between 2000 and 2002.

Defendant 5, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been found guilty of two counts of indecent assault between 2001 and 2002 against one girl. He was cleared of one count of rape and one count of indecent assault.

Defendant 6, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been found guilty of two counts of child abduction against two girls in 2002, jointly charged with Saddiq. He was also found guilty of indecently assaulting another girl between 2000 and 2001.

The men sexually abused and exploited seven girls in several locations incluiding Clifton Park and an alleyway near Boots on Howard Street.

The girls were deliberately targeted for their vulnerability and for the sole purpose of becoming sexual objects for the men, the National Crime Agency, who led the investigation, said.

“None of them had the maturity to understand they were being groomed and exploited, believing that sex was some kind of ‘necessary price’ for friendship,” said the NCA in a statement.

“They were given alcohol and drugs, belittled and passed around to other men for their gratification and were easy to exploit because of their need to be loved.

“All seven suffer the emotional effects of the abuse to this day.”

The NCA said the men knew the girls were lacking in confidence and preyed on their vulnerabilities.

One of the men, Malik, is already serving a 15-year sentence.

In 2016, he was convicted of rape, conspiracy to commit indecent assault and false imprisonment and as part of the second trial under South Yorkshire Police’s Operation Clover investigation following the publication of the Jay Report.

A total of 20 men have been convicted as part of the multi-million pound Operation Stovewood investigation, which has been looking into allegations of non-familial child sexual exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.
