Disgraced Jehovah’s Witness elder jailed for sexually abusing a girl

A disgraced Jehovah’s Witness elder has been jailed for eight years for sexually abusing a girl.

Martyn Barron (55) pleaded guilty to four counts of sexually assaulting a child under 13, more than 10 years ago.

The victim, now an adult, said the abuse had devastated her life.

Leicester Crown Court was told Barron, of Walton Street, Belgrave, Leicester, sought to blame the child for his wrongdoing in a pre-sentence report.

He has been disfellowed by his Jehovah’s Witness community – where he formerly held a senior position as an elder figure, similar to that of a pastor.

Sentencing, Recorder Adrian Reynolds said: “How can a man who professes to have a belief in God have acted in the way you did?
“The effect upon her has been devastating.

“For a moments fleeting sexual pleasure, for you, there’s a lifetime of sexual trauma for a victim who can’t understand why someone should behave in such a way.

“It was abuse by someone who was thoroughly respected within your religious community.

“Although you pleaded guilty, the admissions you made were loaded with self-justification – and despite what your advocate has said, it’s very telling in the pre-sentence report that you believe this was all her fault.

“You’re mired in the kind of self-justification that is the hallmark for dyed-in-the-wool paedophiles.”

Steven Taylor, prosecuting, said the victim was 10 or 11 when the defendant touched her intimately.

The victim confided in someone years later and her parents then learnt about what had happened.

When confronted about the abuse, the defendant admitted wrongdoing but claimed he thought she was nearer 15.

Mr Taylor said: “He was interviewed by the police in August last year and acknowledged there had been a number of sexual incidents, then saying he thought the victim was about 13.”

The defendant tried suggesting to the police the youngster encouraged him which was not accepted by the complainant.
Michael Garvey, mitigating, said Barron had no previous convictions.

He said: “He’d been an elder for some time, helping people with their problems, trying to assist and listening – it was something that played upon him.

“It was one of the factors that led him to behave in this way at other times.”

He said the defendant no longer stood by criticism of the victim in his pre-sentence report and accepted harm caused to her was inevitable.

Mr Taylor said: “He’s no longer entitled to play a full part within the church.

“He gave up his engineering job as it would occasionally involve him going into schools and thought it would be impractical to explain his whereabouts to the police and explain the situation to his boss.

“There are fewer people available for him to contact now or have any sort of relationship with in the future.

“His wife has a disability and he was her carer; life will be much harder for her while he’s incarcerated.

“He’s willing to cooperate with any rehabilitation.”

Barron was made the subject of an indefinite sexual harm prevention order banning unsupervised contact with under 16s and will remain on a sex offender register for life.

Harry Holt – Nelson & Scotland

May 2017

Girl was abused by dad for five years

holt1

Terrified child Angie Rodgers cowered under her duvet and prayed she would be spared.

For five years, from the age of 11, she would suffer at the hands of her perverted father.

Angie felt powerless as God-fearing Jehovah’s Witness Ian Cousins abused her on an almost weekly basis, even when they were at a church convention.

She did finally pluck up the courage to tell church elders – only to be abused by one of them as well.

Harry Holt molested her as they watched Braveheart together. He went on to abuse seven other girls.

Angie says today: “I turned to the Church for help and I was abused a second time.

“I was a child and they should have helped, but they turned on me. They make me feel sick. I don’t think I’ll ever get over what happened. I’ve just learned to live with it.

“I have nightmares and flashbacks all the time and been diagnosed with post traumatic stress.”

Angie’s dad was locked up for five years in 2002. But justice only caught up with Holt last year when he was jailed for assaults on eight children dating back four decades.

Now aged 36 and a mother of four, Angie waives her anonymity in a bid to help other abuse victims.

She says: “Dad did it whenever he got the chance, even when I was ill.

“It started one night when I was just 11. I woke to find him touching me in places a father should never touch his daughter.

“Once, I was throwing up with gastric flu when dad brought me home a fluffy bunny, with a peachy white floral dress and bloomers.

“My mum went to the Kingdom (church) and my dad scooped me up in his arms from the couch, took me to his room and molested me.

“I prayed my mum would come and save me but she never did. After that he used to try to touch me whenever we were alone. It got worse and worse.

“We went to a Jehovah convention when I was about 14 and he tried to rape me in a tent. He was only interrupted when an elder shouted him from outside.”

Angie was 15 when she confided in a pal whose father was a leader in a different congregation. Elders investigated and Cousins, now 55, was called to a “judicial meeting”.

Angie was quizzed by three male elders including Holt, known as “Uncle Charlie” to children within the Kingdom Hall in Stevenston, Ayrshire. They asked intimate questions about where she was touched and how.

She explains: “They even asked what I’d been wearing, as if it was my fault. It was excruciating. I’d heard Bible stories about Lot having sex with his daughters and I was so confused I didn’t know if it was right to have relations with my dad. I was so naive I was still playing with toys and Lego at 18.”

Jehovah’s Witnesses elders cannot act against suspects unless “there is a confession or two credible witnesses”. Members can return to the same church if they show repentance for their sins.

And while elders admonished Cousins he was allowed to stay in the congregation – and the abuse stopped. But months later, in 1997, Holt pounced on Angie after they went door-knocking for members.

She says: “It wasn’t unusual to go back to Holt’s house for something to eat, but this time his wife was away.

“He put Braveheart on and soon after said he needed a wash. It got to the bit in the film when Murron gets her head chopped off when Harry came out of the shower and into the living room.

“He only had a towel wrapped around his waist. He asked me ‘are you tickly’ and tried to touch me.

“He then undid my coat and tried to tickle me again. I said I needed to go home because mum was waiting for me. I was so relieved to get out of there, but on the way home in the car he grabbed my leg and felt his way up towards my underwear.”

The shocked girl told her parents and a meeting was held in her home with Holt. He was later stripped of his privileges as an elder and fled to Edinburgh. Last year a court heard he went on to abuse more children.

Angie, who still lives in Ayrshire, adds: “I feel bad I didn’t tell police at the time and in a way I feel responsible for what happened to the others. But, as a Jehovah’s Witness, I couldn’t. The Church teaches you to keep the family together.

“We were discouraged from mixing outside the faith. I wasn’t allowed to go to parties or sleep-overs. We didn’t celebrate Christmas or Easter and I was bullied at school. If I was caught with other kids my dad would hit me.

“I was scared of Dad. I thought if I told anyone about what happened I would bring reproach on Jehovah’s ‘good name’. I thought the elders were so powerful – above even police and social services.

“There was no question of any of the elders telling police either because everything is kept within the religion.”

Angie finally found the strength to make a police complaint about her father in 2000 – when a second girl told officers she had been abused. He was convicted of indecent acts on Angie and two other girls. Angie turned her back on the Church at the age of 19 and began a new life.

But the religion encourages members to shun those who leave and Angie says her mum didn’t speak to her for six years – and only saw her first two grandchildren when they were five and three.

By then Angie had put Holt’s assault “to the back of my mind”. But in 2014 another victim made a complaint and Angie agreed to speak up.

In February last year retired engineer Holt, 71, got three-and-a-half years at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court for abusing eight girls between 1971 and 2004. One was assaulted as he questioned her about the Bible and morality. He later officiated at her wedding.

Today Angie hopes her story will help other victims. She says: “If what happened to me helps just one young woman – or boy – go to the police it will have been worth it. What happened to me is horrendous but I’m trying to move on, otherwise my abusers have won. The religion is nothing but a cult. Children are kept silent by fears of Holy damnation and Armageddon if they bring the Church into ill repute.

“It’s that fear and the fear of being shunned by friends and family if you leave that stops victims from reporting to police. It’s archaic and it has to stop.”

The Church refused to be drawn on specific details of Angie’s case, saying meetings were confidential.

Jehovah’s Witnesses failed to report paedophile to police – Now convicted

A CHURCH elder who sexually abused vulnerable children was invited to speak at his first victim’s wedding, a court heard.

A court was told Harry Holt, 71, now of Rutland Street, Nelson, went on to attack seven more girls as young as nine after the Jehovah’s Witnesses failed to report him to police.

When the matter was raised, a local beat officer advised parents to ‘just keep your children away from him’, the court heard.

Holt is facing a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of attacks against eight girls in Scotland dating back over 40 years.

His first victim, now 56, described Holt telling her he would deny touching her and that nobody would believe her.

She told Kilmarnock Sheriff Court: “As a child I was made out to be a liar but Charlie knows I’m not lying.

“My mother and father were treated very badly and it caused disruption in the congregation. They were of very good standing.

“The local bobby was there and my mum and dad asked him what they should do and he said, ‘just keep your children away from him’.

The woman, then 14, said a judicial committee of elders was held where Holt admitted groping her but not sexual touching.

She added: “He was sitting straight across from me. As a result he was removed as an elder from the congregation.”

The court heard at 19 she got married and her mother insisted that Holt should officiate which caused a ‘big row’ as ‘it wasn’t until years later that she found out why’.

Another victim, now 32, described Holt abusing her in the jacuzzi at the Magnum leisure centre in Irvine, Ayrshire, when she was between 14 and 15.

The court heard the visit was laid on as a treat for ‘pioneering’ door to door with leaflets and church magazines.

The victim told the court: “I kept telling him to stop.”

Holt, a retired engineer, and his wife later moved from Ayrshire to the Edinburgh area, although the victim still saw him through the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Holt, was found guilty of 11 charges of indecent assault and lewd and libidinous behaviour in Seamill, Dalry, Saltcoats, Kilbirnie, Stevenston and Kilwinning, Ayrshire, and in Gorebridge, Midlothian, between May 1971 and August 2004.

One of the attacks took place in a Kingdom Hall meeting place run by the church, the court heard.

The crimes came to light when two victims shared their experiences years later and went to the police.

Sentence was deferred until next month and Holt was remanded in custody.

Jehovah’s Witness jailed for strangling young girls to gain “sexual gratification”

ianp

A Jehovah’s Witness who got sexual kicks from strangling young girls went unpunished for years after his activities were covered up by the congregation at the church he attended.

But perverted Ian Pheasey’s sordid past finally caught up with him when one of his victims went to the police after becoming concerned over him getting a job at a hospice.

He was jailed for five years after pleading guilty at Warwick Crown Court to assaulting one girl causing her actual bodily harm and two of indecently assaulting other girls.

Pheasey, aged 54, of Langcliffe Avenue, Warwick, was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life and given a sexual harm prevention order restricting his contact with children.

Jailing Pheasey, Judge Griffith-Jones told him: “You obtain sexual gratification from the idea of strangling children.

“That is a hideous and discomfiting fantasy, and one which has given me some concern when I come to sentence you.

“One of the most serious features is that strangulation creates a risk of causing very serious injury and death.

“So it’s not simply a matter of it being frightening and disgusting that small children have been made to suffer in this way, it’s the risk they would suffer something even more catastrophic.”

Prosecutor Nicholas Taplow told the court: “He was a man who had a particular sexual fascination with the act of strangulation, which features in two of the three counts.

“He derived sexual gratification from strangling children, and many children were strangled in this way by him during what he described as ‘horseplay’.”

The offences Pheasey admitted date back to the 1990s when he was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Woodloes area of Warwick.

His first victim was attacked in the Kingdom Hall library, where Pheasey was the librarian at the time, when the seven-year-old girl went there to get a book.

The girl was too frightened to tell anyone – and his actions may have gone undiscovered if it was not for his second victim’s subsequent complaint.

That girl was 14 at the time and he grabbed her round the neck and threw her to the floor where he straddled her and squeezed her neck.

The girl fell into unconsciousness, came round but then passed out again before coming round for a second time and crying out: “Jehovah help me!”

As she got up he calmly told her that if she told anyone, he would kill her, chillingly adding that if she grew up and had girl children he would rape them.

She ran home screaming and crying and told her mother what had happened – only to be told to clean herself up before she was taken to hospital for the bruising to her neck to be treated.

“Sadly her parents chose to conceal the sexual nature of the incident and told her not to say anything about it,” said the prosecutor.

“They continued to understate the seriousness of the assault, and the matter was swept under the carpet by the church.”

Over the years that victim was badly affected by what had happened, suffering flashbacks and night terrors over it, and her religious faith was undermined.

She feels anger towards her parents and towards the congregation for not dealing with it properly, but felt unable to speak out – until she became concerned on learning in 2014 that Pheasey had got a job at a hospice.

The judge observed: “She must have been absolutely petrified. I’m satisfied you started to undo her clothing, but I sentence you on the basis that you did not defile her body.

“She was entitled to support and comfort which could only properly be exercised by this matter being reported to the police.

“Sadly, when she told her parents their priorities were entirely misplaced. As a result of their failures and of those around her, she has had to bear this terrible memory.”

And the judge praised the courage of that victim in coming forward ‘not to help herself, but because she was anxious that others should be protected’.

Pheasey’s third victim was just six when he was carrying out some work at her parents’ home; and as she sat in his van, he got in and began to tickle her before moving his hand up under her skirt – but stopped when she kicked out and screamed.

Following his arrest Pheasey said he could not remember the incident in the library, but accepted he had put his hands round that girl’s neck on more than one occasion.

He admitted he had fantasised about strangling the 14-year-old, and had lured her over with the intention of strangling her and becoming sexually aroused.

Nick Devine, defending, said: “The inevitable lengthy sentence of imprisonment will have devastating consequences for him, going to prison at his age for an offence of this nature.

“It may be that, while the congregation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses can be criticised for how they dealt with it, it has at least acted on him in part to prevent a return to acting out the fantasies he had.”

Ex-Jehovah’s Witness elder jailed for sex assaults on schoolgirl

A FORMER Jehovah’s Witness elder has been jailed after he indecently assaulted a schoolgirl on three occasions nearly 40 years ago.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard how John Winkle performed an indecent act on the child and kissed her.

The victim reported the assaults in 2013 and the defendant went on to admit two charges of indecent assault.

The 58-year-old denied a third allegation of indecent assault, but was convicted after a trial last month.

Now Winkle has been jailed for four years at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.

Peter McCartney, representing Winkle, said he has carried a ‘burden of guilt’ since committing the offences when aged between 19 and 21.

Mr McCartney said: “He recognised what he did to the victim was wrong and he has carried it with him for all these decades.

“He is of previous good character and has been happily married for 30 years.”

Mr McCartney added that Winkle has now been ‘disfellowshipped’, which means he is no longer considered to be part of the Jehovah’s Witness congregation.

He said: “His admission of the counts he did admit has caused him to be extremely isolated.

“The religion he has followed for all these decades has cast him out. He must arrive after it starts and leave before it finishes and he is not allowed to speak to any of those that are there.”

Winkle, of Birkholme Drive, Meir Heath, has been placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and barred from a range of activities involving children and vulnerable adults. He was also made the subject of a restraining order, preventing him having any contact with his victim for five years.

Judge Paul Glenn said: “The issue at trial was whether you had performed oral sex on that child and the jury were sure that you had on a single occasion.

“She was a child when you did that. You were an adult. She described feeling confused and scared.”

The judge described a second indecent assault in which Winkle touched the girl’s private parts as ‘outrageous conduct’.

He added: “Your actions have had a significant effect on her life. She suffered from depression and has undergone counselling. She speaks of flashbacks, the effect on her relationship with other people and her life having been scarred.

“This was about sexual gratification and you are a hypocrite because you became an elder and you investigated a sexual matter even with this in your sexual background.”

Leading Jehovah’s Witness caught with indecent images of girls as young as three

Ian Ross

A leading churchman has been ordered to go on a Sex Offender’s programme after he was caught with child abuse images of the most serious level on his home computer.

Highly respected Jehovah witness Ian Ross, 65, had perverted images of girls as young as three engaged in sexual acts with adults.

He pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children between May 2013 and May last year.

The judge said Ross’s behaviour had shocked his religious community and had led to him being excluded.

No details of his church position were made public when he was also given a suspended jail sentence at Teesside Crown Court.

Judge Stephen Ashurst told him: “You are 65, you have no previous convictions, and to the outside world you appeared to be a respectable man.

“You held positions of some authority in the community, particularly your religious community.

“You now stand in the Crown Court in some disgrace because of what you believed was your private interest and has now put you in the public glare.”

Prosecutor Jenny Haigh said Ross’s computer had stored a total of 593 still and moving images including 28 at the most serious level Category A , another 14 at Level B and 523 at Level C of girls aged between three and 16.

Ross, of St Oswald’s Crescent, Billingham, who has been living with his sister in Southend, was given:

  • Six months jail sentence suspended for two years with the Sex Offender’s Treatment programme

  • Sexual Offence’s Prevention Order banning him from unsupervised contact with girls under 16 for seven years,

  • Banned from accessing the internet except with a device that can be monitored by police

  • Ordered to register as a sex offender for seven years, after he pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children.

The judge ordered the destruction of his computer hard-drive
