Chester-le-Street man pretended to be girl, 17, to groom child, 13

A County Durham paedophile hid vile images on his phone behind the password ‘I love little girls’

Andrew Tomson, who gave his address as a hostel at Plawsworth, near Chester-le-Street, also groomed a 13-year-old girl on the Talk With Stranger website before communicating with her via Snapchat.

He told the youngster – who has complex needs – he was a 17-year-old girl named Chloe and encouraged her to send pictures and videos of herself performing sex acts.

Durham Crown Court heard that due to previous offences the 37-year-old was being closely monitored by police.

During a visit to his address on March 10, police asked to look at his phone which he claimed he had lost.

He hid it behind his back but police asked to see it and discovered nine category A , five category B and 36 category C indecent images of children.

Officers then found two other devices he failed to declare.

During police interview, he unlocked one of the devices for police using the passcode ‘I love little girls’.

On the phone a further 85 indecent images and videos of children were found.

Prosecuting Helen Towers told the court Tomson had also made threats to the young girl and her family.

In mitigation, the court heard Tomson pleaded guilty to all offences at his first hearing at magistrates’ court.

Sentencing Recorder Alistair MacDonald QC said: “These are serious offences and it is not the first time that you have been before the court for offences of this sort.

“You have three offences of breach of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, an offence of possession of indecent images of children, a charge of distribution of indecent images of children and most seriously an offence of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

“It is clear the sentences imposed upon you previously gave little of no difference to your behaviour.”

Tomson was handed a six-year prison sentence with a four-year extension period

He must also pay a victim surcharge.

Paedophile distributed child abuse images on messaging app

A paedophile shared horrific indecent images on a messaging app and was found in possession of material that showed “drugged” children.

Nathan Barker distributed the sickening images on the messaging app Kik and was later found in possession of more indecent material, as well as extreme porn.

The 30-year-old was eventually caught by police after they became aware he was distributing abuse images online.

Barker, of Stirling Street, off Oxford Road, Hartlepool, appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Thursday to be sentenced for distributing indecent images, making indecent images and possession of extreme pornography.

Emma Atkinson, prosecuting, said police became aware of an email address and mobile number linked to Barker, which had been “responsible for distributing category A videos to the Kik chat room”.

On February 4, last year, officers found him at his then-partner’s address and he was arrested.

His iPhone and four other devices belonging to him were also seized.

Ms Atkinson said that indecent images were found on his phone, and that they had been downloaded between December 2019 and February, last year.

The court was told that Barker had distributed two category A images, three in category B and seven in category C to Kik.

His phone contained 765 still and moving images in the most serious category, over 1,000 in category B and over 1,000 in category C.

He was also in possession of extreme pornography.

Ms Atkinson said that some of the sickening material involved children as young as four-months-old, as well as children in “pain and distress”.

She added that some material involved children who were “intoxicated or drugged”.

In police interview, Barker admitted everything, she said.

Sentencing him, Recorder David Gordon said the children involved in the images were being “horribly abused” but said Barker had shown signs of “remorse and regret”.

Barker was given a 20 month prison sentence, suspended for two years and ordered to carry out 30 rehabilitation days.

He must also complete a 90 day sex offender programme and was made subject of a 10 year sexual harm prevention order.

He will also be on the sex offender register for 10 years.

Judge’s hands tied while sentencing man who abused children when he was just 10

A judge’s hands were tied while sentencing a man who sexually abused children when he was just 10.

Colin Taylor carried out the abuse in the 1980s but due to his age and the law at the time, Judge Jonathan Carroll could only hand him a community order.

Aisha Wadoodi, prosecuting, told Teesside Crown Court how he committed three separate offences against different victims.

She said that the victim was offered sweets in order to remain silent.

Taylor, now 47, of Everett Street, Hartlepool, pleaded guilty to three counts of Indecent assault on a girl under 14.

Judge Carroll told David Lamb, defending, that his his hands were tied in terms of sentencing.

He said he would have to apply the powers that would have existed for a 10-year-old child at the time.

The judge told Taylor that he had read the victim impact statement and there was no doubt they had been left with “distress” as a result of his behaviour.

He said: “But you were only 10 years old when you committed these offences and the court’s sentencing powers are limited to what would have been available to the court back in 1985 to 1986.”

Judge Carroll said that at that time and at that age, there was no custodial sentence available.

He sentenced Taylor to a 12 month community order with a supervision requirement for 12 months.

Taylor was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for two-and-a-half years.

Judge Carroll said: “You will have to register with the local police station and because a 10-year-old would have a maximum of two-and-a-half years registration that is what I will impose upon you.”

Sex offender’s abuse of young girls spanned three decades

Brian O'Neil, branded 'a danger' to young girls

A perverted pensioner, who sexually abused girls over three decades, is starting a 21-year prison sentence, and will not be released until he is into his 80s.

Brian O’Neil, 66, who often filmed his activities, was branded “a danger” to underage girls and was made subject of an extended determinate sentence at Durham Crown Court.

It means he must serve at least 14 years in prison before being eligible for parole, but he may have to spend the entire 21 years behind bars.

On release he will also be subject to five-years’ extended licence supervision and will remain on the sex offenders’ register, “indefinitely”.

He was sentenced at the court yesterday, when the hearing heard of the traumatic effect his offending has had on his victims, in one case self-harming and making a number of suicide attempts.

O’Neil, formerly of Wharton Street, Coundon, admitted rape, plus 20 other mainly sexual offences, and voyeurism, at hearings in November and December, last year.

But he denied ten further counts, of which he was convicted following unanimous jury verdicts after a three-day trial in late April.

Passing sentence, Judge Ray Singh told O’Neil, who appeared via video link from Durham Prison: “There can be no criticism and no doubt you are a dangerous offender.

“There is a significant risk to members of the public of the commission of further specified offences.

“In your pre-sentence report you did accept the majority of your offending.

“Your offending pattern, transcended over three decades, reflects a long-standing sexual interest in young children that needs to be addressed in future.”

Chef threatened to go to boy’s home to rape him

A pervert who exchanged sexual messages with a 14-year-old boy arranged a rendezvous, using an alias name and picture profile.

When they did go on to meet in a railway station car park, in County Durham, Liam Paul Scott paid the reluctant boy £30 to perform oral sex on him but when further advances were rejected and he was blocked online, the 24-year-old chef upped his cash offer to £100 and threatened to rape the boy.

Durham Crown Court was told soon after “meeting” via a gay dating site, on which Scott used the account name of ‘Warren Taylor 19’, the boy made it clear to him that he was only aged 14.

Jane Waugh, prosecuting, said this did not deter Scott, who persuaded the boy to switch their messaging to a different account.

Scott, who worked at a hotel at Scotch Corner, sent the boy pictures of his genitalia and a video of him performing a sex act on himself, but when the meeting was arranged the youngster realised the profile pictures did not match the man waiting for him at the station car park.

When he persuaded the boy to perform oral sex on him in his car, Scott forced his head down and filmed the act, later sending the recording to his victim.

Miss Waugh said it was after a further offer of £100 to take part in sexual activity was rejected, that Scott threatened to go to the boy’s home and rape him.

Although he prevented any further online contact, the boy was worried Scott may carry out his threat as he knew he was aware where he lived.

When arrested, in September 2019, after the boy’s mother became aware of the exchanges, Scott made “no comment” replies to police questions.

It was only through a video identity procedure that the boy pinpointed Scott.

Miss Waugh told the court that the boy, who was also victim to other sexual “predators”, has since suffered psychologically, particularly in the wake of the death of a close family member.

Scott, now 27, of Thompson Road West, Darlington, admitted engaging in sexual activity with a child.

Passing a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence, he made Scott subject of registration as a sex offender and a restraining order, forbidding contact with his victim, both indefinitely.

He will also be subject of a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
