John Clemence of Old Colwyn pleaded guilty to five offences involving indecent assaults

A businessman and former councillor was jailed for five years and four months after he admitted to being a child molester.

John Clemence, 87, who had moved to Australia before being sent back to Britain, had groomed and sexually abused his victim when the complainant was both a child and adult.

Caernarfon crown court heard one offence happened when his wife was close to death.

Judge Timothy Petts told the pensioner :”You have been ambivalent about whether you accept your guilt or not.”

Clemence, living recently in Llanelian Road, Old Colwyn, was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life after he pleaded guilty to five offences involving indecent assaults. “This has had a significant impact,” the judge said.

Judge Petts added :”Given the age you will be when you are released and the low risk you are assessed as posing, unusually, it’s not necessary to impose a sexual harm prevention order.”

Prosecuting barrister Andrew Green said Clemence had been the owner of a café in the Llangollen area but had been touching the victim.

Police were told in 2016 about his shameful past. He had moved to Australia but still had a share in the business. The victim said Clemence had “used his wealth and assets” to buy loyalty from some of those who knew him while the complainant was branded a liar.

“Finding the strength to speak out has been truly liberating,” the victim told the judge. “I have done the right thing.”

There was a previous conviction for indecent assault.

Disgraced former councillor convicted of having indecent images of children

A former Oldham councillor handed a suspended prison sentence for having indecent photographs of children didn’t download the pictures on his town hall-issued laptop, the council has said.

Rod Blyth, who had represented Shaw ward on the council, has also been placed on the sex offender register for ten years.

At a court hearing at Manchester Crown Court Minshull Street in December, Blyth was sentenced to 12 months, suspended for two years, for three offences of making indecent photographs of children.

He had pleaded guilty in May 2019.

Blyth was also ordered to complete 30 days rehabilitation activity requirement and was handed a sexual harm prevention order for five years.

There have been rumours on social media in recent weeks that the former elected member used equipment issued by Oldham council to access illegal images of children.

The town hall has confirmed Blyth did not use his council laptop to download indecent images.

July 2020

Former city councillor sentenced for sex offences

A former Labour councillor has been sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years, after being found with more than 36,000 indecent images of children and other extreme pornography.

Roger Spackman, 50, of College Road, was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court today [28 July] after pleading guilty last month to possessing and making indecent images.

The sentence follows one of the biggest investigations of its kind conducted by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Spackman was arrested at his home in 2017 where 68 items and electronic devices, including hard drives and mobile phones, were seized by officers from the Paedophile Online Investigation Team.

In excess of 36,000 indecent images of children, prohibited images and extreme pornographic images were identified from the near five million images and movies that were recovered as part of the investigation.

Specialist investigators spent over 100 hours categorising the images and identified illegal material dated from 2007 to 2017. Each image had to be reviewed, evidenced and assigned a category consistent with the severity of its content; with Category A classed as the most severe.

The Investigators identified 58 Category A, 49 Category B and 27,520 Category C movies and pictures. They also identified 8,682 prohibited pictures and 370 extreme pictures and movies.

Following a near three-year investigation, Spackman was summonsed to court to face charges in June 2020 where he entered a guilty plea to five charges: possessing a prohibited image of a child, possessing extreme pornographic images portraying a sexual act with an animal and three counts of making an indecent photograph/pseudo-photograph of a child.

Following his guilty plea, Spackman was also ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register.

He further appeared at Exeter Crown Court today where he was sentenced by the judge to 10 months suspended for two years and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The Labour councillor had a 12-year career in Devon’s child protection services.

In 1998 he began working at Intervention Services for Devon County Council at a secure children’s home, occasionally working at other units. Before this, he was involved in the creation of Riverside Youth Café in Dawlish.

From September 2001 he worked full-time at a Secure Children’s Home until his role was axed in redundancies in February 2010.

‘Predatory’ paedophile Wakefield councillor Alex Kear jailed for arranging to abuse three-year-old

A paedophile councillor who arranged to engage in sex acts with a fictional three-year-old girl, saying he had waited “years for something like this to happen”, has been jailed.

Alex Kear, 50, of Stansfield Drive, Castleford who was an Independent on Wakefield Council, thought he was meeting with the mother of a toddler after sending her indecent requests.

But the woman was an undercover police officer, Leeds Crown Court heard on Friday.

Kear, who will now lose his seat, was jailed for four years and ordered to serve an extended licence period of two years due to him posing “a high risk of serious harm to children”.

Judge Simon Phillips QC told him: “I have no doubt that if that three-year-old girl had existed you would have intended to carry out your degenerate predatory plans against her.

“This is a deep-seated degeneracy on your behalf, as illustrated by the communications you have made that you have been interested in little girls for as long as you can remember and that you have waited years for something like this to happen.”

Kear admitted last month a charge of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sexual offence and another of inciting the sexual exploitation of a child under the age of 13.

At the time, Wakefield Council said it was frustrated it could not remove him from his position as a councillor because the law said this can only be done when defendants are jailed for three months or more.

On Friday, Judge Phillips was told how, over the period of a month, Kear sent a picture of his genitals to the officer he thought was the child’s mother along with depraved messages about what he wanted to do to the youngster.

According to Jonathan Sharp, prosecuting, Kear said: “The older I get the younger I seem to like. Twenty years ago I would never had thought about a baby but now… young.”

Mr Sharp said the defendant met with the undercover police officer and had agreed to meet again with the fictional three-year-old on August 19, 2019.

But he was arrested three days before.

Kear had told the undercover officer: “The years I have waited for something like this to happen.”

Kear lied to police that he was a one-man-band paedophile hunter before admitting the offences in court

Wakefield district councillor admits child sex charges

A Castleford councillor has admitted two child sex charges against a very young child

Alex Kear, who sits on Wakefield Council as an independent, admitted the charges when he appeared at Leeds Crown Court today

The 50-year-old admitted one charge of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sexual offence involving a child under the age of 13.

Kear also admitted one charge of inciting the sexual exploitation of a child under the age of 13.

The court heard Kear has no previous convictions and sentencing was adjourned to August 20 to allow time for pre sentence reports to be prepared.

Kear was granted bail until his sentencing hearing

Judge Andrew Stubbs QC told Kear: “The fact that I am adjourning your case for reports is no indication of the sentence that you will ultimately receive. All options remain open.”

Kear, of Stansfield Drive, Castleford, won his Airedale and Ferry Fryston seat from Labour at the local elections in May last year.

His name will be placed on the sex offender’s register for a period of time to be determined at the sentencing hearing.

Former Labour MP admits downloading child rape and torture movie

Former Labour MP Eric Joyce has pleaded guilty to downloading a child rape and torture movie of a baby

The 59-year-old former shadow minister, who was MP in Falkirk, Scotland, between 2000 and 2015, has been ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register.

Joyce, of Worlingworth, Suffolk, admitted making an indecent photograph of a child between 7 August 2013 and 6 November 2018 at a pre-trial hearing at Ipswich Crown Court.

Judge Emma Peters said the single 51-second video, found on a device, “depicts a number of children”.

“Some are quite young, one is said to be 12 months old,” she said.

“Clearly a category-A movie.”

Joyce, who was a Labour MP for 12 years and an independent for his final three, was granted bail and the judge instructed that a report be prepared before he is sentenced on 7 August.
