Paedophile caught with ‘truly appalling’ abuse images may never be released from jail

A dangerous sex offender who was found with sickening baby rape images has been sent back to prison and may never be let out.

David Smith was caught with the ‘truly appalling’ images by police who were monitoring him because he has previously been jailed for distributing child abuse images.

He tried to hide his activities by using masking software and untraceable internet addresses but police became suspicious when they found pictures which he claimed were flat-chested young adult women.

They found images of babies as young as six months being raped by adult men.

A judge at Exeter Crown Court told him: “They are truly appalling. They showed the worst conceivable child abuse. They are completely disgusting and one can only imagine with horror the pain and suffering caused by these acts.”

Smith was jailed indefinitely in 2007 for making and distributing child images under a sentence called Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) which has since been abolished. He was declared a dangerous offender at the time.

He served seven years before he was released after completing courses which were thought to have made him safe to return to the community

He remained on prison licence and officers under the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (Mappa) found the images during an unannounced spot check at his South Devon home in May last year.

He was recalled to prison immediately and is currently at Dartmoor Prison. The IPP, which is a type of life sentence, remains in place so he will only be freed if and when he can persuade the authorities he poses no risk of re-offending.

Smith, aged 50, from Newton Abbot, admitted three counts of making indecent images of children by downloading. He was jailed for two years by Judge Timothy Rose.

He told him: ”You were not only unable to control your impulses but you were acting in a manipulative and secretive way and taking what steps you could to avoid detection, knowing you were being supervised.

“You used virtual private networks and masking software so you could cheat the system and carry on offending.

“Your sentence of two years will be calculated from today but you remain under the IPP and I do not know when the prison authorities will consider it safe to release you. It seems to me that could be a very long time.”

Mr Tom Faulkner, prosecuting, said two police officers on a Mappa visit seized two phones and a laptop on May 21, 2020. They became suspicious because he was using a virtual private network and had images he said were of young adult females.

They found 18 images of naked girls on one device and 101 on a phone, including 17 which came into the worst category and some showed babies of up to a year being penetrated by adult men.

There were searches for necrophilia and nudist children and images from a site named Incest Daily.

Mr Andrew Cohen, defending, is very sorry that he was unable to control his interest in children but has now been recalled and has no idea when he will be released.

He said he had done well on licence until his re-arrest and had been working as an assistant at a Mountain Warehouse shop where he was so well thought of that he was a keyholder.

Former jockey exposed by paedophile hunters

A former jockey has avoided a prison sentence after being exposed by paedophile hunters

Terry Taylor sent sexual messages to a fictional 13-year-old girl whose profile had been put on Facebook by a paedophile hunting team

He asked her to touch herself during one message and made arrangements to travel from his home near Holsworthy to meet her before realising his mistake and cancelling the trip.

Taylor, aged 56, is a former horseracing jockey who has a partial disability

A judge at Exeter Crown Court suspended his sentence after hearing that he would lose his specially adapted housing association home if he went straight to jail.

He made contact with the false profile after using a ‘find a friend’ feature on Facebook but told the decoy his own name, age and address.

Taylor, of Bradworthy, near Holsworthy, admitted attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and was jailed for two years, suspended for two years by Judge Timothy Rose.

He was also ordered to do 20 days of rehabilitation activities and put on the sex offenders’ register.

Mr Joss Ticehurst, prosecuting, said Taylor contacted what he thought was a 13-year-old girl called Katie on December 13, 2019, and his messages became sexual over the next few weeks.

He said he wanted to kiss her and on December 28 that he was feeling aroused as well as more explicit suggestions.

He arranged to meet her in Bromley, Kent, where she claimed to live, and booked train tickets and three nights in a hotel, but cancelled them instead of leaving home.

Paedophile Gary Loftus jailed after befriending Taunton family

A serial offending paedophile from Devon befriended a Taunton family and bought sweets for their young child.

High-risk abuser Gary Loftus has been jailed for hanging around a seafront play park and leering at the children there.

Loftus has a history of child abuse dating back 35 years and has served a string of jail sentences for molesting children or flouting court orders.

He was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order banning him from play areas and from befriending families with young children.

Loftus was reported to police after being seen at a play park on the Esplanade, Paignton, where he walked around the perimeter for up to an hour while appearing to touch himself.

He had previously visited Exmouth seafront with a family with young children before going to their home in Taunton and buying sweets for their six-year-old daughter.

He had been out of jail for less than a year for similar offences in Teignmouth when he breached the SHPO again in December 2019.

Loftus, 67, of of Wellesley Road, Torquay, admitted two counts of breaching a SHPO and was jailed for 16 months by Judge Timothy Rose at Exeter Crown Court.

The judge told him: “It is the assessment of the probation service that you pose a high risk of causing serious harm to children.

“When you cultivated friendship with families with young children, you knew who you were and what you should and should not be doing.

“When you went to the play area, you put yourself in that position.

“You have done it before and were doing it again.

“There was an element of a grooming situation where you could get gratification from the presence of a child, even if it was not possible to act on it.

“Imagine the reaction of the mother on hearing that the man who was hanging around her six-year-old is actually a sex offender with multiple convictions.

“The parents of the children in the play area would be appalled to know that a sex offender had stopped awhile to look at their children, because that is what he wanted to do.

“You know what you have done and here you are doing it all over again.”

Ian Graham, prosecuting, said Loftus befriended a family in December 2019 and visited an arcade in Exmouth with them before going to their home in June 2020 and buying sweets for their daughter.

He was arrested in September 2020 after being seen walking around the outside of a play area at Paignton seafront that was full of young children.

He later accepted he was gaining sexual gratification by looking at the children.

He has previous convictions for 19 offences and was jailed in 1989 for indecent assault, in 1993 for gross indecency and in 2002 for breaking an order to stay away from a child.

He has been jailed twice for breaking a Sexual Offences Prevention Order imposed in 2009, which was updated to a SHPO by the time he was jailed in August 2018 for ingratiating himself with a single mother in Teignmouth without telling her about his past.

Paedophile seen watching children at Devon play park facing jail

A paedophile from Torquay is facing jail after he was seen watching children at a play park.

Gary Loftus was banned from going near children under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order but broke it by visiting the park in South Devon

He has already been jailed once for breaking the order by befriending a family with children without telling them he was a registered sex offender

A judge at Exeter Crown Court ordered a fact-finding hearing into the new case because 67-year-old Loftus claims he walked past the playground rather than stopping and leering at the children.

Judge Timothy Rose said that one witness saw Loftus standing behind a wall near the play area and touching himself sexually for up to an hour.

He said it would make a substantial difference to the sentence but warned Loftus that he is almost certainly going to jail when the case returns to court next month.

He said: ”We need to resolve the issue of whether he was hanging around for an hour and masturbating or just walking past and glancing at the children.

“He can stay on bail, but that is no indication of sentence. It is just about impossible to think of any other outcome other than a prison sentence.”

Loftus, aged 67, of of Wellesley Road, Torquay, admitted two counts of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Ashburton man sent decoy 12-year-old naked photos of himself

A 48-year-old pervert was caught after the 12-year-old girl he sent a naked picture to turned out to be an undercover police officer.

Colin Parry, of Ashburton, sent messages to the ‘girl’ about the sexual activity he would like to have with her, Exeter Crown Court was told.

The increasingly sexualised emails were traced back to him and he was arrested. On his laptop police found images of children being sexually abused.

Parry told police it was all a mistake and he did not have an interest in children.

But he admitted four offences relating to his communication with the undercover officer and possessing indecent images of children when he appeared at court.

Ms Mary McCarthy, prosecuting, said the offending took place between October 2017 and March 2018.

She said he made contact with a girl he thought was 12 years old, telling her he was in his 30s and early 40s.

He began by asking if she liked boys and soon turned the conversation to his sex life and what they should do together. He sent her photos of his penis and masturbating.

Images found on his laptop included those in the worst category of child abuse.

“He clearly had either sent of received images,” said the prosecutor.

Judge Davis Evans said it was not a victimless crime because the children in the images had been abused by adults.

Parry, of Home Park, was given a two-year community order and 40 days rehabilitation.

He was given a sexual harm prevention order to monitor and limit his use of computers in the future.

Silverton man guilty of sexually assaulting child

A Devon man has been warned he will be sent to jail after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a child.

Graeme Ellis, 56, from Silverton, has been standing trial at Exeter Crown Court accused of multiple offences dating back several years.

He denied seven offences against a child aged under 13. The jury took a little under two hours to reach unanimous guilty verdicts on all charges.

Judge Timothy Rose told him: “You’ve been found guilty of all seven counts. I can’t proceed to sentence today I need time to read certain reports.”

Ellis was released on conditional bail until the sentencing hearing in two weeks.

“You have got that period of time to prepare yourself for what will be a prison sentence. When you come back before the court, it’s certain you will be sent to prison.”

Ellis was told he must sign the Sex Offender Register.

The defendant will return to court for sentence on June 24.
