Sex offender who wanted to meet young girls caught by ‘paedophile hunters’

A sex offender who wanted to meet a child has been caught by ‘paedophile hunters’.

Mark Bunyan of Back Lane, Malvern was in reality talking on the internet to ‘decoy’ children, one calling themselves ‘tiny girl’, and not real children after a string by a group set up to bring online predators to justice.

The 55-year-old admitted two charges of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child when he appeared before magistrates in Worcester on Thursday.

He indicated guilty pleas to sexual communication between January 6 and 16 this year in Malvern via Kik and a further charge between January 9 and 16 this year, again via Kik.

The charges are listed as ‘attempts’ because no real children were involved in the commission of the offences.

Elizabeth Blacklock, prosecuting, said the case was not suitable to be heard by magistrates and asked that it be committed to the crown court for sentence.

Miss Blacklock said Bunyan had sent sexual pictures to decoys who had identified themselves as being 14, the profiles set up by ‘a paedophile hunter group’. Bunyan had also asked them to send him ‘images of themselves in their underwear in return’, she told the court.

Magistrates committed the matter to Worcester Crown Court. No date was fixed at the hearing but the defendant was told he would be notified ahead of the hearing at crown.

Bunyan was granted bail with one condition – that he is not to have any unsupervised contact with any child under 18 other than contact which is unavoidable and inadvertent in the course of daily life.

Ripon paedophile planned to sexually abuse girl aged four

A convicted paedophile who planned to sexually abuse a four-year-old girl with the help of her mother has been jailed for 10 years.

Former St John’s Ambulance volunteer John Peter Noble, 36, gave detailed instructions on how to bring the child to him, including descriptions of how the mother should train the child and what he wanted to do with the youngster, said Kate Bissett, prosecuting.

They included the use of a sex toy.

On May 1, he bought three pouches of food for the girl’s baby sister at Boots in Ripon and some lubrication oil and set off for the meeting place on the other side of the town’s Market Place.

But the “mother” he was messaging and speaking to on the phone was a police officer, the “children” didn’t exist, and her colleagues arrested Noble.

The 36-year-old was on a suspended prison sentence passed in 2019 for similar but less serious offences.

He had committed them when he had talked to a paedophile hunter believing him to be a 12-year-old child, but had not arranged a meeting.

“I do regard you as posing a significant risk of causing serious harm to children by future such offences,” the Recorder of York, Judge Sean Morris, told him.

He gave Noble a 14-year extended sentence of 10 years in jail plus four years’ extended licence.

He made him subject to a new, lifelong sexual harm prevention order and put him on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Noble, who called himself “TryingToMoveForward” online, of North Street, Ripon, pleaded guilty to eight offences of arranging sexual offences with a child through an adult, one of breaching a sexual harm prevention order imposed in 2019 to protect children from him, and breaching the suspended prison sentence.

For him, Abbi Whelan said: “He very much wants to change”.

While on remand, he had tried to access sex offender courses in prison

Christchurch man jailed after being caught in paedophile hunter sting

A man has been jailed for nearly five years after encouraging a fictional 12-year-old girl to abuse her seven-year-old sister.

Andrew Gidley (29), of Dairy Close, sent crude messages to what was, in reality, an adult member of a paedophile hunter group, Bournemouth Crown Court heard.

Sending him down, Judge Robert Pawson said Gidley had “taken leave of his senses” during the offending period between March and August 2019.

Prosecutor Peter Wright said the defendant initiated the chat over a social networking site before it transferred on to the Kik message app.

He engaged with what he thought was a 12-year-old girl called Mollie Spencer who was, in fact, a fake profile created to catch paedophiles.

Gidley’s conversation “quickly turned sexual”, Mr Wright said, and he sent her pictures of himself and his genitalia as well as a video of an adult woman performing a sex act on him.

The defendant went on to encourage the child to perform sex acts on herself.

By the end of their chat he moved on to telling the fictional girl to perform sex acts on her younger sister while she was asleep.

But on 16th August he was confronted on his doorstep by members of the paedophile hunter group.

He was arrested and confessed to his offending when interviewed by police.

He appeared at court having admitted three charges: two of attempting to incite a girl under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity and another of engaging in sexual communication with a child.

Judge Pawson noted Gidley had told probation his motivations in committing the offence were not sexual – which the judge said was “nonsense”.

Gidley had been assessed as low risk and committed the offences at a time when his life was “drifting”, the judge said, but it involved the “corruption of a younger sibling”.

He sent Gidley down for four years and eight months, ordered he sign the sex offenders’ register for life, and gave him a 15-year sexual harm prevention order.

Pensioner who thought he was sexting 12-year-old girl caught in police sting

A pensioner was arrested by police after he arranged to meet up with who he thought was a 12-year-old girl at the Bandstand in Caerphilly town centre.

William Anderson, 81, of Pembroke Court, Hendredenny, exchanged sexual text messages with a decoy called “Layla” who acted on behalf of a paedophile hunting team

Anderson told Layla she didn’t need to “worry about becoming pregnant” because he was infertile, and told her to keep their conversations secret.

He also asked her to send him topless pictures of herself on more than one occasion.

However, Layla was in fact a police decoy – not a 12-year-old girl. When Anderson arrived at the Bandstand to meet her, he was arrested by police.

William Anderson was arrested at the Bandstand after arranging to meet a police decoy who he thought was a 12-year-old

Anderson appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday, July 9 and was handed a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

The court heard how Anderson, using the username “BillCricket”, first spoke to the decoy on online chatroom Lycos, then later WhatsApp.

The conversation began on April 20. When Anderson was told by the decoy that she was just 12-years-old, he responded: “It’s a pity you’re so young.”

He also asked her if she had started having periods, and if he could touch her breasts and private parts.

He also suggested they could “sneak into the bushes and be alone together” and asked if she would be naked.

While he admitted the offences, he claimed he was not aroused by the coversations, and only wanted to meet with her to tell her they could no longer speak to each other.

He pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming and attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child.

Sentencing, Judge Christopher Vosper QC said: “There are a number of mitigating features in this case. You are 81, you have no previous convictions, I accept you are remorseful and before this you lived an exemplary life.”

Anderson was ordered to carry out 25 days rehabilitation activity requirement and was given a sexual harm prevention order for ten years.

Thomas Edwards – Llangunnor

Ex-nurse in his 80s shared ‘disgusting’ messages with people he thought were girls aged 11 and 13

A former nurse in his 80s engaged in highly sexualised online conversations with people he thought were girls aged 11 and 13, a court has heard.

Thomas Edwards chatted to three separate social media profiles, encouraging the girls to perform sex acts on themselves and to kiss and fondle their friends and telling them he liked “lesbian love”.

In fact the 85-year-old was communicating with decoys set up and operated by so-called paedophile hunters.

Swansea Crown Court heard that at the beginning of August 2019 Edwards made contact with what he thought were young teenage girls online.

Hannah George, prosecuting, said the three profiles were actually run by members of a group called Children Need Protecting.

The court heard the profiles made their purported ages clear to the defendant but over the following days he engaged in sexual conversations with the “girls” – telling them they were gorgeous, asking them about their sexual interests, and encouraging them to perform sex acts on themselves while he “talked them through” what they should do.

Miss George said Edwards encouraged the girls to try kissing and touching their female friends because he liked “lesbian love” and discussed setting up a webcam so he could watch what the girls were doing. He also asked one of them about her underwear and asked another for pictures of her in their nightie.

The court heard that on August 6 members of the group travelled to Edwards’ home to confront him.

The defendant was arrested later that evening and initially gave a “no comment” interview before telling police officers he didn’t have a sexual interest in children.

Thomas Picton Edwards, of Rhoslas, Llangunnor, Carmarthen, had previously pleaded guilty to attempted sexual communication with a child and attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. His failure to attend for two earlier crown court hearings had resulted in arrest warrants being issued.

Judge Paul Thomas QC told the defendant he had engaged in “highly sexualised or, to use another word, disgusting” conversations with what he believed to be young girls.

He said Edwards had tried to portray himself as extremely fragile and in poor physical and mental health but his medical conditions were, in fact, no worse than might be expected of a man of his age.

The judge said it was clear that when Edwards had engaged in the conversations he had “full mental capacity – warped though that was”.

Judge Thomas said the appropriate sentence after trial would have been one of seven years in prison.

He said reducing that as he was obliged to do to account for the defendant’s age and for the extra difficulties of serving a prison sentence in the current Covid pandemic brought the starting point down to four years.

Allowing a one-third discount for the guilty pleas he sentenced Edwards to two years and eight months in prison.

The defendant will serve up to half that period in custody before being released on licence under the UK government’s early release scheme to serve the remainder in the community.

The defendant will be a registered sex offender for the next 10 years and will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same length of time.
