Paedophile caught with child abuse images admits he needs help

A paedophile who downloaded images of children being sexually abused told police he needed help for his behaviour.

Gary Dodden, 56, actively searched the internet for images of abuse, Exeter Crown Court was told.

He also said he had exchanged images with like-minded paedophiles.

The judge told Dodden it was people like him who provided a demand for the real-life rape and sex abuse of children.’

The defendant, of The Glen, Okehampton, admitted three charges of making indecent images of children.

He was given a community order after the judge was told he was a realistic prospect for rehabilitation.

Prosecutor Mr Richard Crabb said that on August 8, 2019, police entered the defendant’s address and seized his computers.

“He was interviewed on the day of the search and admitted having a sexual interest in children,” said Mr Crabb.

“He said he needed help. He’s actively been looking for indecent images of children for three years and had been banned multiple times by a messaging app.

“He said he had exchanged images in chat groups but that it was all fantasy and he would never have acted it out in real life.”

On his phone and iPad police found images of abuse involving children aged between two and 16. The court was told some of the images were of the most types of abuse.

The defendant later said he had only been motivated by curiosity and could not get sexual gratification from the images because of a serious medical condition.

He said he was ashamed and the images were horrendous.

Judge David Evans said abuse in the images covered all levels of seriousness

“Without people behaving like you did there wouldn’t be the demand that there is. It would be much less likely people would bound and abuse children in the way those who carried out these images did, if there was not people like you forming the audience.”

He imposed an 18-month community order with 20 rehabilitation days. Dodden was also told to pay £500 fines and costs and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to stop him committing the same offences again.

Sadistic Devon man jailed for ‘branding’ teens with initials

A sadistic pervert who carved his initials into the skin of two young teens has been jailed.

Alex Harper permanently scarred two of the girls by branding them without their consent.

The 24-year-old, from Paignton, had a fixation with domination, causing pain and self harm and claimed his victims had agreed to his carvings.

But a judge at Exeter Crown Court said the reality was that Harper was sly, egotistical and calculating and wanted to find ways to ‘own’ the vulnerable teenagers and bend them to his will.

“Your wounding of each of these women was carried out without their consent,” said Judge David Evans at Exeter Crown Court.

Harper was found guilty at trial of one charge of controlling or coercive behaviour relating to a 16-year-old girl. He admitted wounding the same victim and another teenager.

The court was told the victims had been left psychologically as well as physically scarred by Harper.

He cultivated an online persona as a caring and sensitive man with an interest in anime. But the trial was told he had a quick temper if he did not get his own way.

“This is an object lesson in the perils of so called online romance,” said the judge.

“I’m in no doubt you were a very difficult person to get along with.”

Harper was jailed for three years and four months.

He was also given restraining orders not to contact either victim for ten years.

Van driver films himself sexually abusing toddler and boasts to another paedophile

A vile and perverted delivery driver filmed himself abusing a toddler in his van and then bragged to another paedophile.

Adam Goulden, 37, gained access to the two-year-old girl through her innocent mother, then offered to take the toddler out on trips but instead abused her in his delivery van.

A court heard Goulden recorded the abuse, and police found videos of the abuse on his phone and computer.

They also found film which he had taken of him taking part in sex acts with a dog

But the van driver was locked up for four years and four months at Exeter Crown Court on Tuesday.

Judge Peter Johnson, who certified him as a dangerous offender, put Goulden on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Sentencing the thug, he said: “It is clear you have an abnormal sexual appetite in terms of trying to explore sexual boundaries. I get the clear impression you were using the girl’s mother to get at the child.

“The girl can be heard referring to her mother throughout the clips and to make matters worse, you shared at least one image on at least one occasion.

“Other images show you have a sexual interest in children. There are aggravating features in the extreme youth of the child and you being under the influence of ketamine.

“You were clearly willing to act out your fantasies. You are pre-occupied with sex and quite willing to push the boundaries to satisfy your sexual craving.

“You pose a serious risk of causing serious harm to children.”

Goulden was caught after police found messages on his phone, in which he boasted about his abuse to another paedophile.

The court was told the defendant had a bag containing cable ties and electrical tape in his vehicle.

He admitted sexual assault on a child, making and possessing indecent images of children, possession of extreme images, and two counts of possession of cannabis.

Mary McCarthy, prosecuting, said police discovered four videos and 75 still images of him abusing the two-year-old girl on August 14, 2019.

They showed the child naked from the waist down and being sexually assaulted as he tried to reassure her by talking about her mother. The abuse lasted 20 minutes.

Goulden, from Dartmouth, Devon, also had other images of children on his phone and computer that he had downloaded from the internet.

There were also 207 images of bestiality including some showing him taking part in sex acts with a dog.

He tried to blame workmates for the offences by claiming they had access to his phone while he was at the delivery firm’s depot.

Ilfracombe man jailed over child sex offences

A man has been jailed for sexual activity with three school girls.

Dale Padmore, 22, was described by a judge at Exeter Crown Court as a ‘manipulative’ sex offender who seemed to have an interest in young girls.

The defendant, of Belvedere Road, Ilfracombe pleaded guilty to six offences of sexual activity with a child.

The court was told that some of the offences related to the abuse of a 13 year old girl.

He was jailed for two years.

His victims were in court to read out victim personal statements about the devastating effect on their lives. Members of their families were also present.

Judge Timothy Rose said there were a number of concerning features and it was clear Padmore had known the victims were all below the legal age of consent for sexual activity.

July 2021

‘Dangerous’ paedophile who abused nursery children in Torquay given lengthy jail term

A nursery apprentice who abused nine toddlers in his care has been jailed for 11-and-a-half years.

Teenager Jayden McCarthy was described as a dangerous sexual offender who poses a risk to the public by a judge at Exeter Crown Court.

He was 16 and an apprentice at a nursery in Torquay in July 2019 when he forced a girl to have oral sex with him.

Analysis of CCTV from the previous month showed him carrying out a series of less serious sexual assaults on toddlers.

McCarthy had previously raped a boy of eight or nine in a completely unrelated case, several years earlier.

Judge David Evans told him: ”These offences were aggravated by the extreme youth of the children, the breach of trust and the presence of other children, as is clear from the footage.

“I judge you as posing a high level of risk based on the way in which you could barely contain your sexual impulses in the images from the nursery, when you were aged 16, and the way you abused the boy earlier.

“It seems that sexual offending may be in your nature and a great deal of work may be necessary to work it out

“I cannot ignore the very great deal of distress and psychological disturbance that you caused directly to the victims and indirectly to those who care for them.

“You had obtained a job at the nursery and received safeguarding training. Whatever immaturity you exhibited, you clearly understood the importance of safeguarding and the need to protect the young and vulnerable children in your care.”

McCarthy, now aged 18, of South Devon, denied one count of rape and 13 of sexual assault at the nursery and was found guilty of all these offences and the two rapes of the boy.

He was jailed for a total of 11-and-a-half years with a three year extended licence. The sentence means he will serve eight years and three months before he will become eligible for parole.

He will thereafter be liable to recall to prison if he fails to comply with his licence until the full 14 years and six months has expired. The judge put him on the sex offenders’ register for life.

McCarthy had been working at the nursery for four months when a three-year-old girl went home and told her mother that he had made her take part in a sex act in a toilet area.

A massive police operation was launched on July 29, 2019, when the girl told her mother that ‘Jayden had been naughty’ in a toilet at the nursery.

Officers studied 265 hours of CCTV footage which revealed the other offences, in which he put his hand up the skirts of girls or touched them while pretending to play or apply sun cream.

One clip showed him looking around furtively as he slid his hand inside a little girl’s clothing as she took a nap on a mattress on the floor with other children asleep all around her.

The CCTV footage also showed that he had been alone in the toilet area with the three-year-old for around nine minutes on the day he assaulted her.

Her dress had got drenched while she was in a wet pay area and he was ostensibly changing it for a dry one which she kept in her rucksack.

McCarthy was in care and living in a children’s home at the time while also working part time as a waiter at a pub in Kingsteignton.

He had been working at the nursery since March, having passed two interviews and been vetted

Nursery apprentice who sexually assaulted nine children is under 24-hour supervision at Somerset location

A teenager who abused nine toddlers at a nursery is under 24-hour supervision at an isolated location in Somerset.

Nursery apprentice Jayden McCarthy of Paignton was found guilty of the offences at the end of a trial at Exeter Crown Court.

He was 16 in July 2019 when a three-year-old girl went home and told her mother he had made her take part in a sex act in a toilet area of the nursery in Torbay.

CCTV from the previous ten days revealed he had carried out 13 sexual assaults on seven girls and one boy.

A teenage boy also came forward to police to disclose that McCarthy had raped him repeatedly when he was aged about eight.

Judge David Evans adjourned the case until July 14 for sentence and allowed McCarthy to remain on bail until then.

He is currently in council care and under 24-hour supervision in Somerset and will remain there until sentence.

The judge ordered a psychiatric and pre-sentence reports and told McCarthy to expect a lengthy sentence of youth custody.

The judge told him:”You have been found guilty on the clearest possible evidence of grave sexual offences against young and very young children at a time when you were yourself a youth.

“You face a substantial sentence of custodial detention.

“However, I cannot sentence you now.

“I need to give those affected to record the effect on the children in personal statements which will be before me when I sentence.

“I also need to give the lawyers time to construct submissions about sentence, which they will put into writing.

“Given your age, and the age you were at the time, and the seriousness of the offending and your lack of previous convictions, I am allowing time to arrange a psychiatric assessment by someone with forensic experience and a full pre-sentence report to be prepared by the probation service.

“That will address all relevant matters, including dangerousness.”

The judge told McCarthy he will have to sign on the Sex Offenders’ Register immediately and will be prevented from working with children again by the Declaration and Barring Service.

McCarthy, now 18, of South Devon, denied one count of rape and 13 of sexual assault at the nursery and was found guilty by unanimous verdict of each offence.

He also denied two rapes in relation to the earlier assaults on the eight-year-old boy and was found guilty of those by majority verdicts.

A massive police operation was launched on July 29, 2019 when the three-year-old girl told her mother that ‘Jayden had been naughty’ in a toilet at the nursery.

Officers studied 265 hours of CCTV footage which revealed the other offences, in which he put his hand up the skirts of girl or touched them while pretending to play or apply sun cream.

Her dress had got drenched while she was in a wet play area and he was ostensibly changing it for a dry one which she kept in her rucksack.

McCarthy was in care and living in a children’s home at the time while also working part time as a waiter at a pub in Kingsteignton.

He had been working at the nursery since March, having passed two interviews and been vetted.

He had received training in safeguarding during his employment.

The jury at Exeter Crown Court was shown 13 CCTV clips taken in July 2019 which showed him touching eight children inappropriately.

McCarthy was also found guilty of two counts of rape in a separate incident.
