John Clemence of Old Colwyn pleaded guilty to five offences involving indecent assaults

A businessman and former councillor was jailed for five years and four months after he admitted to being a child molester.

John Clemence, 87, who had moved to Australia before being sent back to Britain, had groomed and sexually abused his victim when the complainant was both a child and adult.

Caernarfon crown court heard one offence happened when his wife was close to death.

Judge Timothy Petts told the pensioner :”You have been ambivalent about whether you accept your guilt or not.”

Clemence, living recently in Llanelian Road, Old Colwyn, was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life after he pleaded guilty to five offences involving indecent assaults. “This has had a significant impact,” the judge said.

Judge Petts added :”Given the age you will be when you are released and the low risk you are assessed as posing, unusually, it’s not necessary to impose a sexual harm prevention order.”

Prosecuting barrister Andrew Green said Clemence had been the owner of a café in the Llangollen area but had been touching the victim.

Police were told in 2016 about his shameful past. He had moved to Australia but still had a share in the business. The victim said Clemence had “used his wealth and assets” to buy loyalty from some of those who knew him while the complainant was branded a liar.

“Finding the strength to speak out has been truly liberating,” the victim told the judge. “I have done the right thing.”

There was a previous conviction for indecent assault.

Pervert sent sex messages to ‘teenagers’ – but one of them wasn’t what she seemed

A pervert who sent sex messages to underage girls but was snared by an undercover cop has been spared jail.

Robert Gilliatt thought he was contacting a 14-year-old via the Kik messenger service in November 2019.

However, it turned out to be an undercover officer, Caernarfon Crown Court heard.

When police investigated, they found he had contacted another three girls he thought were aged between 14 and 15, sending them sexual messages.

A mobile phone also contained search items “displaying your sexual interest in children”, said Judge Huw Rees, who added that attempts to deny that interest were “wholly unrealistic”.

Gilliatt, 27, of Hewitt Close, Penrhyn Bay, Conwy, admitted seven offences, which included attempting to incite girls to engage in sexual activity, attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and attempting to incite a girl to engage in sexual activity.

Three other not guilty pleas were allowed to lie on file.

Judge Rees said: “In total you contacted four girls, believing them to be under 16 years of age.

“The fact that no harm was done was through no credit or action on your behalf.”

Judge Rees sentenced Gilliatt to 12 months for the most serious offence of attempting to incite a girl to engage in sexual activity, with sentences of three to five months for the other offences, which will run concurrent.

The sentences were suspended for 24 months.

Gilliatt was given an 80 day rehabilitation activity requirement (RAR), a programme requirement with 45 sessions and was ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid work.

Judge Rees also gave the defendant a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) for 10 years and ordered him to register on the sex offenders register (SOR) for 10 years.

The forfeiture and destruction of the mobile phone was ordered and Gilliatt must pay a £149 victim surcharge.

Man admits indecent assaults

A pervert was jailed for three and a half years after pleading guilty to carrying out indecent assaults and indecency in front of a child.

Elwyn Wynne Hughes, 54, formerly a farmer, but now of Scotland Street, Llanrwst, was due to stand trial at Caernarfon Crown Court yesterday but changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced.

Prosecutor Oliver King said the abuse had a “terrible” effect on his victim’s life.

He said “a massive weight” had been lifted from the victim by Hughes admitting what he did all those years ago and that the victim was “telling the truth”.

Maria Masselis, for Hughes, said: “For 17 years he’s lived a lie. He will live with the knowledge of what he has done for the rest of his life.”

Sentencing Hughes to an immediate jail term of three and a half years, Mr Recorder Peter Griffiths QC, said his name would be placed on the sexual offenders register indefinitely.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £170.

Man who left 10-month-old girl with life-changing brain injury jailed

A man who left a 10-month-old girl with a life-changing brain injury after shaking her violently has been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Joshua Morris, 29, of Old Colwyn, Conwy, lost his temper when the baby woke him up by crying at night.

Mold Crown Court heard Morris had an “explosive loss of temper” during the attack in January 2018.

He was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm in November.

During the trial the jury heard Morris was woken after going to bed at 05:00 GMT. He grabbed the baby from a cot and shook her violently.

He had then lied in a call to emergency services and to a paramedic about what had happened.

The baby was left critically ill and could have died without medical treatment having had an injury “as serious as can be imagined”, the court heard.

Judge Rhys Rowlands said had a jury not cleared him of acting with intent, he could have had a sentence twice as long as the one he was given.

He said he could see no signs of genuine remorse from Morris, who had a longstanding drug habit

November 2020

Man guilty of shaking 10-month-old baby in ‘loss of temper’ causing life-changing injuries

A man who shook a “helpless” 10-month-old baby in a “momentary loss of temper” caused her to suffer life-changing brain injuries.

Joshua Morris had had little sleep when he was left alone with the child while her mother went to the shop.

When she returned, the baby girl was “floppy and motionless” after Morris had shaken her on January 9, 2018.

Neither the child or her parents can be identified for legal reasons.

The 29-year-old of Ffordd Elias in Old Colwyn, initially claimed the baby had been bouncing in the cot and fell.

He denied any involvement in her injuries, including bleeding on the brain, oxygen deprivation and bleeding of the retinas on both of her eyes, and claimed he had found her “mangled” on the floor

He later admitted that was a lie, and changed his story to say he had found the baby “lifeless in the cot” after hearing a thud upstairs.

But after deliberating for less than two hours, a jury at Mold Crown Court found him guilty of causing the baby grievous bodily harm (GBH).

He was acquitted of a second charge of causing GBH with intent.

Mold Crown Court heard how the child, who is now three, will have ongoing issues for the rest of her life, and will be unlikely to ever live independently.

It comes after suffering serious brain injuries, “highly consistent” with shaking, also known as “shaken baby syndrome”.

Following the verdict, Judge Rhys Rowlands, said: “You are convicted on overwhelming evidence having caused very serious injury to an innocent child.

“You did it in a loss of temper which has had awful, awful, consequences for this child – sadly that she will have to live with for the rest of her life.”

The prosecution argued the baby’s injuries came after being shaken “forcibly” when Morris “lost his temper” after waking up from little sleep to find he was alone in the house with the baby.

The court heard he had taken drugs the night before and had gone to bed around 5am.

Morris said it wasn’t unusual for him to have any more than three hours sleep a night.

Following the incident, the child was taken to Alder Hey hospital, who informed North Wales Police and social services.

Morris was arrested, but denied any involvement in her injuries.

He accepted he had initially lied about finding the baby on the floor, but said the lie had not been “deliberate” after “putting two and two together” by assuming the baby had fallen from the cot.

However, detailed examinations found the baby had suffered “non-accidental injuries” likely to have been caused by someone.

One medical expert concluded the type of injury was “unlikely” caused by falling out of a cot.

They explained had the baby fallen from the cot, they would have expected to see fractures of the skull.

Another expert who specialises in the brain said only a “minimum degree of force” would have been required to have harmed the child.

Any underlying medical conditions were also ruled out.

The court heard after the baby was admitted to hospital, she was also found to have small unexplained bruises on her head and an old fracture to her left leg.

Morris will be sentenced at Mold Crown Court on Wednesday, December 9, and was told that custody was inevitable.

Dad felt he’d failed as a parent after ‘dangerous’ sex offender targeted his teenage daughter

A dad said he felt like he’d failed as a parent after a ‘dangerous offender’ groomed his underage daughter for sex.

He spoke out as Bradley Stephen Thomas Knowles was today sentenced to four years and eight months by Judge Timothy Petts at Mold Crown Court.

The 24-year-old, who appeared via video-link from HMP Berwyn, admitted two charges of sexual activity with a child aged under 16, between March 19 and April 24 this year and possession of an image of a child.

Knowles, of Blaen Cwm, Llandudno, had met the girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, online before forming a sexual relationship with her, said prosecutor Myles Wilson said.

Mr Wilson said Knowles had previous offences, for battery and harassment involving young girls.

In a victim personal impact statement to the court, the child’s father told the court he felt he had “completely failed” his daughter and hadn’t protected her enough.

Despite early guilty pleas, the Judge Timothy Petts branded Knowles a “dangerous offender”.

Judge Petts said: “There is a pattern of domestic abusive behaviour and I am satisfied you are of serious risk of harm in the future.

Knowles must also serve an additional four years on licence, remain on the sex offender’s register for life, was given an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim and a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years.
