Jail for paedophile who carried out ‘campaign of rape’
A “Brazen” paedophile subjected an 11-year-old girl to what a judge labelled a campaign of rape.
Jailing Luke Simpson for 18 years at Swindon Crown Court this afternoon, Judge Jason Taylor QC said the 33-year-old had been cunning, determined, predatory and manipulative.
Simpson stood unblinking in the dock as he heard he would serve at least two-thirds of his jail time behind bars. He must serve an extended five years on licence.
The Melksham man showed little emotion throughout the hour-long hearing, only briefly placing his hands over his ears and staring towards the ceiling as prosecutor David Scutt read an impact statement from the victim’s mother telling of the devastation his sexual abuse had had on the whole family.
Between January 2019 and October last year, Simpson subjected his victim – then aged 11 and 12 – to a campaign of abuse.
His sexual abuse had occurred “too many times to count”, the girl told police and included rape and other forms of assault.
Knowing the girl’s mother checked her phone, Simpson invented coded phrases for sexual activity like “cuddles tonight?” that he would send her via WhatsApp.
Mr Scutt said: “He asked her if she would like what he was doing to her and if she said no, he would become in her words angry or moody with her for days.”
The girl disclosed the abuse first to her younger sister then, last October, to her mother.
Simpson was swiftly arrested but denied wrongdoing. However, he admitted to his own mum he had “been in a sexual involvement” with the girl and that it had been consensual.
Horrified by her son’s lack of remorse, his mother gave a statement to the police. She said: “I decided if Luke was not going to admit what had happened I was going to have to call it in myself.” The man’s father, who also gave a statement to the police, said giving the account “seems like the most terrible thing ever but I know I have to”.
Interviewed a second time, Simpson claimed the sexual activity had been initiated by his victim. He admitted being “wrecked on drugs and alcohol”, said he hadn’t been living in “actual reality” and had been “away with the fairies”.
Mr Scutt made clear that Simpson had not entered a basis of plea and his sick claims to detectives were not accepted by the prosecution.
In an impact statement read to the court, his young victim said: “I struggle to trust men and feel like I’m not normal. As a 12-year-old girl I feel ashamed to have been treated like that.” She added: “He made me feel anxious, I sometimes thought he would kill me if I told anyone. I would feel safer knowing he is in prison.” In her own statement, the victim’s mother praised her daughter and described Simpson as sick and demonic.
Simpson, formerly of Atworth, near Melksham, pleaded guilty to rape of a child, assault of a child by penetration and sexual assault
Judge Taylor said the man’s offending amounted to a “campaign of rape”.
Imposing an extended sentence comprised of 18 years’ imprisonment and a further five years on licence, the judge said: “Your brazen offending coupled with the risks that you were prepared to take to gratify your sexual desires is deeply concerning.
“It was cunning, it was planned, it was determined, it was predatory, it was manipulative.
“When seen in conjunction with your distorted and twisted view of her initiating or consenting to behaviour it reveals a troubling lack of empathy and insight which undoubtedly in my view heightens the risk to other young girls.
“In my view, you will require extremely close management and monitoring on your release and an extended sentence not only manages that risk but also facilitates lengthier and more in-depth work to continue and indeed for your attitudes to be tested.”
Simpson left the dock to taunts of “bye” from the public gallery. He will remain a sex offender for life and must abide by the terms of a sexual harm prevention order indefinitely.

Melksham man, 33, admits raping girl
A West Wiltshire pervert that admitted raping a 11-year-old girl during a nine month campaign of sexual abuse has had his sentencing adjourned
Luke Simpson, 33, of Atworth, near Melksham, had previously pleaded guilty to:

One count of rape of a child aged under 13,

One count of the oral rape of a child aged under 13,
-
One count of sexual assault of a child aged under 13 by penetration,
-
One count of sexual assault of a child aged under 13 by touching.
The crimes were committed between January and October 2020.
Simpson was due to be sentenced at Swindon Crown Court but it has now been adjourned until a later date.
Simpson was refused bail. He remains in Bristol prison.
Judge Peter Crabtree ordered psychological and pre-sentence reports, remanding Simpson in custody. The judge told the probation service look at whether the defendant was “dangerous” and should receive an extended prison sentence.
Addressing members of the victim’s family sat in the public gallery, Simpson’s barrister Tabitha Macfarlane said: “Those reports are going in no way to reduce what is going to be a very lengthy prison sentence. I hope they realise none of this is for any ‘defence trickery’, if I can put it this way.”
Simpson had previously appeared over the video link wearing an orange fluorescent jacket, spoke only to confirm his name and guilty pleas.

Voyeur’s collection of abuse images found on discarded SD card
A paedophile voyeur’s collection of hidden camera pictures was found by chance when a man picked up a discarded SD card near Morrison’s.
But Judge Peter Crabtree spared Paul Shelton an immediate jail sentence, saying it was in the public’s interest for the 42-year-old to be rehabilitated and noting that he had already sought help.
Prosecutor Roderick Blain told Swindon Crown Court that a member of the public had found an SD memory card on April 10 last year.
He loaded the card, which he’d picked up outside Morrison’s in Westbury, into his computer in the hope of finding pictures that might help reunite the card with its owner.
But when he saw what he believed to be indecent images of children stored on the card, he reported the matter to the police.
Stored on the card were a number of images that appeared to have been shot from a hidden camera device as well as other recordings of internet pages showing child sexual abuse material.
Enquiries by the officers led them to Shelton, who was arrested last September as he got off a plane at Gatwick Airport.
It emerged that he had installed a hidden camera devices in his bathroom and recorded three young girls as they were using the toilet. He had also taken a number of upskirting images of girls known to him.
Shelton had recorded a number of short video clips showing the rape of girls as young as five.
In total, he had six category A images, three in category B and 31 in category C. None of the images he’d taken himself were in category A.
Shelton, of Partridge Way, Old Sarum, pleaded guilty at the magistrates’ court to making indecent images of children and voyeurism.
He had previous convictions dating back to the 1990s but none for similar offences.
Judge Crabtree sentenced Shelton to 14 months’ imprisonment suspended for two years, noting that immediate custody was not required in order to protect the public, the defendant wanted to work with the probation service and there was a realistic prospect of rehabilitation.
Shelton must complete 35 rehabilitation activity requirement sessions, 100 hours of unpaid work and a three month curfew.
He was made subject to a 10 year sexual harm prevention order and must register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Convicted sex offender charged and remanded after paedophile hunter sting
A convicted sex offender has appeared in court charged with breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) imposed last month.
Kevin Curran, 32, is accused of trying to engage in sexual communication with two girls aged under the age of 16 at the weekend.
Wiltshire Police were called to reports of a disturbance at the defendant’s home in Beechcroft Road, Swindon, at around 8.15pm on Sunday.
At the scene, officers found a group of paedophile hunters detaining Curran. He was subsequently arrested and taken into custody at Gablecross Police Station.
It’s the Crown Prosecution Service’s case that the defendant has used messaging applications to speak to the two girls between 20-21 March. However, the girls were actually fake accounts set up by a child abuse activist group.
It’s alleged he spoke to the ‘girls’ in a sexual nature and requested naked photographs from them, in turn breaching his two-year SHPO imposed on 5 February for similar offences.
Curren entered no pleas and no bail application was made. He was remanded in custody ahead of a case management hearing at Swindon Crown Court in April.

Suspended sentence for man who sent explicit image to ‘girl’
A pervert told police he’d not realised the “girl” to whom he was chatting online was 13 – as a shaft of sunlight had obscured that message on his phone.
Kevin Curran’s claims were undermined by the fact the “girl” had spoken to him about school lessons, being bullied and her mum.
Notwithstanding her self-declared age, over three weeks last spring 32-year-old Curran sent the girl a picture of his privates and pestered her to send images of herself naked.
Judge Jason Taylor QC suspended Curran’s 16 month prison sentence for a year-and-a-half.
Prosecutor Lucy Taylor told Swindon Crown Court on Friday that Curran had sent a friend request to a decoy Facebook account last January.
The account, which claimed to be in the name of a 13-year-old called Jessica Miles, was run by paedophile hunter group The Ghosts.
Ms Taylor said: “The decoy accepted the request and it was made very clear that she was 13 years old and Mr Curran responded with his age being 31.”
The conversation had begun innocuously. However, over a two week period from March 29 to April 12, it turned explicit. Curran sent the “girl” an image of his privates and a screenshot from a pornographic website.
He pestered her to reciprocate with an image of her naked chest. “I sent you pictures of my c*** now it’s your turn,” he wrote. “Jessica” replied that her mother had told her never to send such pictures and she was too young.
Curran was said to have persisted in his requests and also asked her to send pictures of herself in the bath.
Quizzed by the police, Curran admitted sending an explicit picture of himself but denied knowing “Jessica” was 13. Ms Taylor told the judge: “He said that the sun was shining on his phone at the time and he thought she was 18.” The prosecutor added that “Jessica” had told Curran of being a schoolchild, getting bullied and her hatred of PE.
Defending, Rhianna Fricker said her client had suffered a significant brain injury in 2014. The injury had left him with significant difficulties; he was unable to leave the house on his own as he was easily led.
Although he had 43 convictions on his record for more than 80 offences, all dated from before his brain injury. He had not been in trouble since and had cut his ties with previous associates.
Ms Fricker noted that many of the interactions between her client and “Jessica” had been started by the decoy account. Curran’s electronic devices were seized but police had found no illegal material on them.
Curran, of Beechcroft Road, pleaded guilty at the magistrates’ court to attempting to cause or incite a girl aged 13-15 to engage in sexual activity.
Sentencing Curran to 16 months’ imprisonment suspended for 18 months, Judge Taylor said: “You were persistent in your approach and your requests, even telling her that her mother didn’t need to know what she was doing to try and facilitated what you wanted for your own sexual gratification.”
He noted that the defendant’s mental health difficulties were powerful mitigation. That, coupled with the change in his lifestyle, the realistic prospect of rehabilitation and the fact he was supported by his mother and stepfather, meant he was prepared to suspended Curran’s prison sentence, the judge said.
He ordered Curran complete up to 50 rehabilitation activity requirement days and a curfew. He must register as a sex offender for 10 years and was made subject to a 10 year sexual harm prevention order.
