Update: Released and living in Miskin, Mountain Ash

April 2013

Manipulative sex predator jailed for seven years

The victim of a manipulative sex predator whose only plea was for him to admit and apologise for what he had done was in court to see his abuser jailed for seven years.

Former BBC employee and manager at Memory Lane Cakes in Cardiff, 56-year-old  Stephen Thompson denied four counts of indecent assault with a male person under the age of 16 and a further count of serious sexual abuse between June 1, 1978, and October 1, 1978.

Thompson, of Albert Street,  Mountain Ash, was found guilty by a majority verdict on all counts and faced life in prison as a result.

Jailing the former printer at the BBC in Llandaff, Cardiff, Judge Richard Twomlow told Thompson: “He [the victim] was scared of you then and has been scared of you ever since.

“It was a manipulative, repeated and calculated and the buggery was the culmination of grooming. That would now be called rape.

“No force or threat was used overtly but he could not have consented because of his age. But he was too scared to resist.

“All he [the victim] wanted from you was an admission and an apology. He had neither and you have shown no remorse for your offending.

“The main focus must be the harm done and your culpability.

Judge Twomlow said  Thompson’s crimes as a 21-year-old man over a three-month period had “devastated” his victim throughout his life.

The jury heard the escalating abuse had taken place on Maerdy Mountain and at Thompson’s parents’ home.

It only came to light last year when the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, reached a crossroads in his life and he reached out to the Samaritans for help.

The court heard he had been a  bright student, but following the abuse had turned into a rebel and was always in trouble with police as a way of dealing with what had happened to him.

Thompson will be released after serving three-quarters of his sentence, unless considered for parole after serving half, and will have to sign as a sex offender for life.

Housemates shared vile collection of child abuse images

Two housemates were caught with hundreds of images of child abuse which they had been sharing between themselves.

Jason Davies and Jake Duncombe were found to have Category A, B, and C indecent images as well as extreme pornography on various electronic devices.

Sentencing the pair at Cardiff Crown Court, Judge Richard Twomlow said: “There are victims. Anybody who downloads these images is supporting that. They are serious offences.”

Emma Harris, prosecuting, said the police searched a property at Newby Court in Cardiff Bay on July 23 last year.

The court heard Davies opened the door and officers seized devices including a phone, hard drive, laptop, and tablet.

Indecent pictures and videos were found at the most serious Category A, as well as Categories B and C, plus extreme pornographic images. There was evidence to show the pair were distributing the material between themselves.

Duncombe said to an officer: “Yes, I viewed them before, but I don’t view them now. I have not viewed them for a long time.”

Both defendants were arrested and taken to Cardiff Bay Police Station where they were interviewed.

Duncombe provided a prepared statement accepting possession and distribution of the images. Davies accepted possession but denied distribution. Neither of them had any previous convictions

Davies, 50, from Glanlay Street in Penrhiwceiber, Mountain Ash, admitted possessing extreme pornography and possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

Duncombe, 48, from the same address, admitted possessing extreme pornography, possessing prohibited images, possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

Judge Twomlow described the material as “disgusting” and reminded the defendants the children would have suffered as the images were made.

He noted the distribution was limited to between themselves and there was no evidence they were sharing it more widely otherwise he would have sent them straight to prison.

The judge said they had not been in trouble before and he could suspend the sentence in the circumstances.

They were each given an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete up to 30 sessions of the Horizon sex offender programme.

Duncombe was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work. Davies is not able to complete unpaid work and was ordered to comply with a nine-month curfew.

They must each pay £210 costs and register as sex offenders for 10 years and the judge made indefinite sexual harm prevention orders.

Five separate paedophile hunter groups caught out man trying to send explicit messages to underage girls

A man who was being monitored online by five different paedophile hunting groups repeatedly tried to send photographs of his genitals to schoolgirls.

Jamie Banwell thought he was in touch with five girls on Facebook Messenger but he was actually having conversations with adult decoys from groups including Guardian Angels and TFN UK.

Cardiff Crown Court heard he sent a message to someone he believed to be a 13-year-old girl saying: “So you’ve never seen a c*** before? Lol.”

Nigel Fryer, prosecuting, said the first decoy was posing as a 13-year-old girl and made her age “quite clear”. The court heard Banwell sent a message saying: “I’m watching porn love. Lol.”

A second decoy, this time from Catching Online Predators, also created a profile as a 13-year-old girl and the defendant asked for a photograph of her.

He replied: “Your tits are popping out of your top love.” In another message he said: “Wow, you’re really sexy.”

A third decoy, from TFN UK, was also pretending to be a 13-year-old girl. The defendant asked her about school, TV, and boyfriends.

The court heard he asked: “So you’ve never seen a c*** before? Lol.” He sent her a picture of his genitals and asked: “How big are your tits love?”

Prosecutors said the fourth decoy, from Angels For Innocence, accepted a friend request from Banwell in April 2018 and told him she was 12.

The defendant offered to send her a picture of his genitals and told her: “Don’t let your mum see it.” Mr Fryer said Banwell continued to “pester” her for a picture of her breasts. Banwell was still messaging that decoy on the morning he was arrested.

A fifth decoy, from Guardian Angels, was acting as a 13-year-old girl and the defendant asked: “Have you ever seen a d*** before?”

Police carried out a search warrant at his home in Llanharan on November 1, 2018, searching the property while he was at work.

Officers arrested the defendant at 9.40am and seized his phone and analysed the conversations.

During his police interview Banwell accepted using Facebook to chat to “young girls” but denied sending photographs of his genitals or asking for pictures of a girl’s breasts.

He claimed he was drunk at the time of the conversations and stated his work friends had access to his phone and were “joking around”.

Asked why he was befriending girls, the defendant said he was “just being friendly”.

The court heard he had three previous convictions, including sending an offensive message.

Mr Fryer said that offence involved a real 14-year-old girl who the defendant contacted on social media and sent her a private message calling her “sexy”.

The court heard Banwell asked: “Do you want to see my c***?” The girl’s mother found the message and no picture was sent.

Banwell, 36, from Park View in Llanharan, admitted five counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and two counts of failing to surrender.

Judge Richard Twomlow noted the five decoys were not connected but were from five different groups.

Banwell was given a three-year community order and must carry out 150 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to complete the Horizon sex offender programme and 12 days of rehabilitation.

The defendant will have to register as a sex offender for five years and the judge made an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.

Prolific pervert befriended teen’s family before sexually assaulting her

A prolific sex predator sexually assaulted a teenage girl after befriending her family who were unaware of his previous convictions for indecent assault.

Simon Nash, 35, was convicted of sexually activity with a child under 13 following a trial at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.

At the time of the offences, he was on a sexual harm prevention order for two separate offences of indecently assaulting children when he was teenager.

The defendant was accused of “deliberately associating himself” with the family of his victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in order to gain access to her.

Despite denying the offence, Nash was found guilty by a unanimous verdict on March 4 and appeared for sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday.

He also faced a charge of making thr eats to kill but he was acquitted on this charge.

During the sentencing, prosecutor Alexander Greenwood read out a victim personal statement from the victim’s mother.

It said: “It has made her ill and I have noticed a massive difference in her as a person. She has had to have support in school for mental health.

“There has been a difference in behaviour, she is non-engaging with family and locks herself in her bedroom and doesn’t attend family outings.

“Before she was a lovely person, always going out and acting like a normal teenager. It has put pressure on us as a family and I feel so hopeless and upset because she won’t open up to me.”

In 2002, Nash was convicted of two offences of indecent assault on a female under 14 when he was 17 years old and in 2004 he was convicted of indecent assault on a female under 16 when he was 19 years old.

Sentencing, Judge Jeremy Jenkins said he considered whether to give Nash a indeterminate prison sentence but he drew back from that and decided to give the defendant an extended sentence.

He said: “You have denied the offence to the jury and the author of the presentence report and called the victim a liar and you put her through the ordeal of a trial so you get no credit.

“You are described as being completely unrepentant and as a significant risk to children. You targeted your victim who was vulnerable.”

Nash, of Heol Caradog, Penywaun, Aberdare, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment, six of which he will serve in custody and the remainder on licence.
