British paedophile teacher jailed by a Cambodian court

A British teacher charged with raping underage boys has been jailed by a Cambodian court

Steve Loryman, 57, who taught English at a private school, was arrested in November at his rental apartment in the district for paying money to the parents of young boys to let them stay with him.

He was convicted of committing indecent acts against minors.

Six children, aged between nine and 13 years, were rescued from his rental house and five of them confirmed that they had been sexually abused.

Police discovered him midway through sex with one child, while three others watched on.

“The Council of Judges sentenced him to 15 months in jail but three months were suspended,” he said. “I have no further comment because it is the discretion of the judges.”

He was convicted of paying to have sex with four boys, all aged between ten and 14 years old

Police and child protection groups claim they began monitoring Loryman after being tipped off on November 11.

Loryman was allegedly seen with five boys in a tuk tuk before buying them food at a local market.

Police monitored Loryman for two weeks before raiding his home.

Police claim the boys told officers they were each paid between £4 and £8 to have sex with Loryman.

Action Pour les Enfants in a statement yesterday said Mr Loryman’s actions were brought to its attention in September last year, when it received a tip-off from two confidential sources about child abuse in Mr Loryman’s rental apartment.

It said Aple started cooperating with the Cambodian National Police to investigate the alleged abuse.

“Mr Loryman was also ordered to pay a compensation of approximately $1,500 to two child victims and was fined $750,”

He was also banned from Cambodia for three years after he completes his jail term.”

The court heard he taught the boys English, fed them, supported their school fees and allowed them to play in his apartment, gaining their trust before abusing them.

He was previously a deputy headmaster at a school in Keighley, and had reportedly been volunteering in the South East Asia country with his wife since June 2017.

Former teacher/choirmaster with “dark paedophile inclination” has been jailed for abusing four boys

A former boarding school choirmaster with a “dark paedophile inclination” has been jailed for abusing four boys.

Kenneth Francis assaulted the boys while working at Widford Lodge Boarding School in Chelmsford in the 1970s.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard Francis touched boys’ genitals and told one of them: “This is our secret.”

Francis, 72, of Akasaka in Tokyo, was jailed for 12 years after being found guilty of 15 counts of indecent assault and two counts of gross indecency.

The court heard the boys were under the age of 16.

The attacks happened at the school and at Francis’s then home in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, between 1972 and 1979, with Francis giving alcohol to some of his victims.

He had kissed pupils during one-to-one lessons before touching their genitals, the court heard.

One of Francis’s victims said during the trial that he had been abused beneath the school stage then given reward stars by the choirmaster, which he told police were “for my performance under the stage”.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, one man said he “resented” being at the school.

Sentencing him, Judge David Turner QC said: “Behind the facade of competency, respectability and uprightness you hid a dark paedophile inclination which was to blight the life of those boys and leave a profound legacy of psychological damage.”

Francis must also sign the sex offenders register for life and was made subject of a 12-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, banning him from contact with any boy under 16.

Retired teacher who sexually abused children in the 1970s is convicted of 17 charges

A retired teacher who sexually abused children in the 1970s has been convicted of 17 offences.

Kenneth Francis assaulted four boys who were pupils at a school in the Chelmsford area.

The attacks took place at locations including the school and his then home in Boreham between 1972 and 1979.

On some occasions he gave alcohol to the victims – who were all under 16 – before assaulting them.

The offences came to light in April 2017 when one of the victims reported that Francis had sexually assaulted him. Further allegations were uncovered during the course of our investigation.

Two of the men he abused when they were children have spoken of the impact his actions have had on their lives.

One said: “This has been a very long, hard journey and it has taken its toll on myself, my family and friends.

“To get to this point where truth and justice have been upheld is an immense relief.

“I would like to thank the police who have worked so tirelessly on this case, the support staff who have helped me to come to terms with what happened, and my family and friends who have supported me on this journey with love and prayer.”

The second man said: “I never planned to speak out about these things that happened to me so many years ago but am now proud that I was brave enough to do so.

“It’s possible the victims in this case are just the tip of the iceberg and there may be more out there, harbouring their scars and trying to move forward as best they can – just as I have.

“The psychological scarring is something that I have had to struggle with growing up, but it never heals.

“You just learn to live with it, as a dark part of yourself that you try to keep hidden away.

“Now I am able to let it rest for what it is.

“I’d like to thank the person who was brave enough to start the proceedings that led to charges being brought.

“A lot of children’s lives have been harmed and it’s such a positive message that justice can prevail – and that everyone is accountable for their actions in the end.

“Essex Police and officers from my local force have been diligent, professional and supportive.

“I have also been touched by the warm support from my family and friends, who were brave and loving enough to stand up and speak my truth.

“And as we all know, the truth can set you free.”

Francis, now 72, of Akasaka in Tokyo, was voluntarily interviewed in July 2017 and was arrested and further interviewed in July 2018.

In October 2018, he was charged with 13 counts of indecent assault and four counts of committing an act of gross indecency.

He stood trial at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday 15 July and was convicted today, Friday 2 August, of all the charges.

Francis is due to be sentenced on Tuesday 27 August.

Sunderland sex offender who left underage victim traumatised is jailed almost 30 years after his crimes

A sex offender has been put behind bars almost 30 years after his crimes were committed.

David Wood’s victim, who suffers from PTSD, said his conviction by a jury “is part of the healing process” for her after years of struggling with the effects of what he did.

Wood, 62, who has lived abroad but is formerly of Sunderland, denied indecent assault and two offences of indecency with a child, all in relation to the same underage girl, but was found guilty after a trial in July.

At Newcastle Crown Court Wood was jailed for six years and ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life.

Wood must abide by the terms of a sexual harm prevention order.

Judge Julie Clemitson told him: “She hated you for what you had done.”

The judge added: “Undoubtedly, your behaviour towards her had a profound and long-lasting impact upon her life.”

Judge Clemitson said Wood, who has no convictions before of after the offences and handed character references to the court, “no longer presents a substantial risk towards children”.

Sue Hirst, defending, said Wood gave up his life in Tenerife after the charges were brought against him.

Miss Hirst added: “Character references speak of other aspects of Mr Wood’s character, him having been a loyal friend to people, of hard work.

“As a result of the convictions he and his partner, who he has been with for three-and-a-half years, have had to abandon the life in Tenerife, having lived there for some time.

“Mr Wood had remained in this country and his partner has returned from the property in Tenerife, facing having to rebuild her life in this country in order to continue supporting him.”

Man guilty of sexually assaulting school girl in the nineties

A man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a young girl in the early nighties.

David Wood, 62, who lives in Spain but formally of Sunderland, had been accused of inappropriately touching the school girl, carrying out a sex act in front of her and asking her to perform a sex act upon him.

The victim only found the confidence to come forward and tell police about the abuse in 2017.

Woods was arrested and later charged with two counts of gross indecency and one count of inciting a child.

He denied the charges but was found guilty by a jury at Newcastle Crown Court on 15 July. He will be sentenced at the same court in September.

Man who fled to Saudi Arabia to avoid sexual assault charges sentenced

A Weybridge man who sexually assaulted an eight year old girl and fled to Saudi Arabia for six years to avoid capture has been sentenced to nine years imprisonment.

Naim Golmohamad, 67 of no fixed address but formerly of Weybridge subjected the victim to sexual abuse.

The court heard that in July and August 2012, Golmohamad sexually assaulted the victim, on two separate occasions in Byfleet

This second incident led to the victim revealing what happened to her mother, who called the police.

When officers were going to charge Golmohamad, who was originally arrested in September 2012 and released on bail, he fled the country for Saudi Arabia.

Police continued to track him and were alerted that he was back in the country in July last year when he bought credit for his mobile phone at Heathrow.

That phone made a call in Staffordshire and, using local information, he was traced to an address where colleagues from Staffordshire Police arrested him and returned him to Surrey.

He was charged and remanded into custody.

Ahead of sentencing, the victim wrote in her impact statement, described by Judge John as “A thoughtful and moving document”: “I question many times who I would be if the incidents had never happened in my life.

“I can’t really tell you a lot about how it’s affected me since 2012 because I can’t remember how I was before so I couldn’t really compare the before and after of my feelings and behaviour to tell you about the effects.

“It feels like I’m at war with myself and my body and it has been very difficult to try and come to peace with the incident.”

Golmohamad admitted three counts of sexual assault by touching and was also found guilty of two counts of sexual assault by penetration.

At Guildford Crown Court today (18 June), he was sentenced to nine years behind bars, consisting of a custodial term of eight years and an extended licence period of one year. He will be on the sex offenders register for life.

Family’s justice as four men are jailed for 4 year old son’s kidnap and murder

A Stirling family whose four-year-old son was brutally murdered in Pakistan almost five years ago have finally received justice.

Four men were earlier this year found guilty of the murder in August, 2014, of Shahryar Ahmad and last month at a court in Faisalabad each received life sentences on charges of kidnap, murder and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

It follows a campaign by Shahryhar’s parents, Iftikhar Ahmad and Eram Jamil, lobbying from Stirling MP Stephen Kerr, cross-party support from more than 60 MPs and the work of a special unit of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Shahryar had been abducted outside his grandmother’s home in Faisalabad in an extortion bid and taken to a village 30 miles away where he was killed.

Concerned about the time it was taking to bring those responsible to justice, Iftikhar protested outside the Pakistan consulate in Glasgow and visited Pakistan numerous times to get the police to investigate the killing.

When the matter reached court this year Iftikhar was threatened by the four accused and their associates.

Iftikhar said this week: “The loss of a child affects you deeply. I do think we can turn a corner now with the sentences handed down to these four men, but the loss of Shahryar is something that will never leave us completely.

“I knew there was a risk taking these men on. However, I had to do it for Shahryar. I was determined to bring these men to justice.

“Every time I attended court they were there with around 10 to 15 others. I was verbally threatened by them and my cousin Omar Farook was physically attacked outside court. It was intimidating.

“However, I have to thank Stephen and his team for all their efforts in moving things forward. They were brilliant.”

Mr Kerr stressed this week that a number of factors had brought the campaign to a conclusion with the conviction of the four murderers.

Among them was a meeting with the Chief Justice of Pakistan in Westminster in November last year and a letter signed by around 60 MPs.

There was also lobbying of the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and the Governor of Punjab, and former Glasgow MP, Mohammed Sarwar.

Mr Kerr said: “Many people nudged the process along. However, the main credit has to go to Iftikhar and Eram Jamil. It has been their burden.

“A lot of members of parliament including those from the Labour Party and the SNP were also involved.

“There are more than 60 members of parliament who came together to write letters to the Chief Justice of Pakistan.”

He also pointed to the involvement of Asia Minister of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Mark Field and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt as well as personnel on the ground in Pakistan, adding: “It was a highly professional operation. All of these factors combined to bring about this turn of events.”

Iftikhar, of Riverside, who has lived in Stirling for 25 years, was reunited with Eram Jamil, a bank manager in Pakistan, daughter Anabia and son Mohid in the summer of 2018. He has been working as a taxi driver in city, but is planning to start a travel agency business.

Mr Kerr added: “The people of Stirling have, characteristically, reached out to this family. Stirling is open and welcoming and we are enriched by families like this.”
