Ex-West Sussex school chaplain and teacher sentenced

A former Shrewsbury School teacher and chaplain has been jailed for 12 years for abusing nine pupils across three decades.

Gary Dobbie was found guilty last month of four counts of indecent assault against a boy between 1986 and 1991, at Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham, West Sussex , having already been convicted last year of abusing eight other pupils.

The 67-year-old was a teacher and chaplain at Christ’s when the assaults took place.

Dobbie, who was the chaplain at Shrewsbury School when he was arrested in 2016, was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on Wednesday to 12 years in jail for all 19 offences, a court official said.

He is one of FIVE ex-teachers convicted after police investigated complaints spanning 30 years by 22 of the school’s former students.

In the latest trial, Dobbie’s victim told jurors it was “habitual” for him to be groped during night visits to his on-site lodgings while he was given wine and once fed smoked oysters.

Dobbie preferred to smoke cigars but would buy Turkish cigarettes for his pupil and also assaulted the boy during two school trips, at one point drunkenly lunging at him in a violent and sexual manner.

He told how visiting Dobbie was an “escape” from being bullied.

But he was shown little sympathy and instead groped under his school shirt while they sat alone on a sofa.

The married father, who still battles with urges to suppress the traumatic memories, said when he confided in a fellow teacher at the school he was told to “get over it and move on”.

Dobbie was arrested while teaching at Shrewsbury School, where he worked after leaving Christ’s Hospital. He then moved to France after living in Hereford.

He was found guilty last year of 15 charges detailing multiple offences against six boys and two girls as young as 12 between 1998 and 2001.

He had denied 12 counts of indecently assaulting four boys and two girls, attempting to indecently assault a boy and two counts of indecency with a child.

Sports coach Ajaz Karim, was jailed in August for 10 years after assaulting six girls between 1985 and 1993.

In July, James Husband, also known by his middle name of Andrew, was jailed for 17 years for raping and indecently assaulting a girl as young as 14 between 1990 and 1994.

Peter Webb and Peter Burr admitted indecently assaulting pupils at the school between the 1960s and 1980s and were also jailed

Ex-West Sussex school chaplain and teacher convicted of sex offences against boy pupil

A former teacher and chaplain at a Horsham public school has been convicted of a series of sexual offences against a pupil in his care.

Gary Dobbie, 67, of Rue De La Piale, Albi, France, was convicted of four counts of sexual assaults against the boy between 28 and 31 years ago, at Hove Crown Court on Friday (3 May) after a nine-day trial.

Dobbie had already been convicted in June last year at the same Court of 15 offences against eight other pupils aged between 12 and 19, while a teacher at the school, all but one between 1991 and 1996.

Following the further allegation received by police for the first time during 2018, Dobbie appeared again at the same Court in April this year and pleaded not guilty to four charges that he indecently assaulted the further victim, then aged between 13 and 17 between 1986 and 1991, who was also a pupil at the school while Dobbie was a teacher.

One of the counts related to multiple occasions.

He was remanded in custody to be sentenced on 12 June this year for all 19 offences – those of which he was convicted in June last year, and those of which he was convicted on 3 May this year.

Detective Sergeant Karrie Bohanna of the Sussex Police Complex Abuse Unit said; “This latest case involved Dobbie establishing a strong relationship with the male pupil over a period of two to three years whilst alone with him at his own on-site lodgings, where he would give him alcohol and assault him whilst having intimate conversations.

“The pupil had suffered a difficult time at the school and was bullied. He turned to Dobbie for refuge and had become close to him but on many occasions Dobbie assaulted the boy at his private lodgings, and on two school trips.

“As the court heard last year in the previous trial, Dobbie had also engaged in systematic grooming and sexual abuse over many years against other pupils. Dobbie would host dinner parties at his house in the school grounds with pupils. He would give them alcohol and encourage them to talk about their sexual encounters, and when alone with them, would assault them.

“Dobbie preyed on the vulnerabilities of his victims for his own sexual gratification.

“This has been a very complex and sensitive investigation in which the victims of Dobbie showed real courage to speak up and report both to Christ’s Hospital School and the police.

“Our investigation began in January 2016 when pupils first contacted the school and reported the abuse.

“Dobbie’s victims were mainly children who should have been able to feel safe whilst in the care of their teachers; instead he exploited his position in order to groom and sexually abuse his victims.

“All the offending in this case dates back to between 17 and 30 years ago, and does not involve current staff or pupils at the school.

“We have had the fullest co-operation from the school throughout this investigation, and they have supported us in providing all the information we requested, which helped us to contact these victims, and witnesses.

“Anyone who is the victim of sexual abuse, now or in the past, can contact us at any time, online or by calling 101, and can arrange to talk in confidence to experienced investigators.”

Further advice and sources of support are available on the Sussex Police website.

Dobbie is a registered sex offender for life.

GUILTY: Paedophile ex-Shrewsbury School teacher abused pupils as young as 12

A former Shrewsbury School teacher is facing jail after being found guilty of sexually abusing pupils.

Gary Dobbie was today convicted of 15 counts involving multiple offences against male and female students as young as 12 that took place while he was working at Christ’s Hospital School between 1998 and 2001.

Dobbie, who was the chaplain at Shrewsbury School when he was arrested in 2016, was found guilty alongside friend and fellow teacher James Husband at Hove Crown Court.

A jury of seven women and five men deliberated for 25 hours and 43 minutes before finding the pair guilty of 21 counts.

A total of five teachers from Christ’s Hospital School have now been convicted after police investigated complaints made by 22 former students.

Dobbie and Husband used to laugh together about their exploits, which took place over the course of 13 years while they lived and worked at the school in Horsham, West Sussex, the court was told.

The pair looked straight ahead from the dock and did not react as the verdicts were read out.

Dobbie, aged 66, of Albi in France but formerly of Hereford, was found guilty of 15 counts involving offences against six boys and two girls.

He denied 12 counts of indecently assaulting four boys and two girls, attempting to indecently assault a boy and two counts of indecency with a child.

When questioned by police, Dobbie branded the claims “totally untrue”.

Dobbie groomed pupils by hosting dinner parties at his house in the school grounds with favourite students. He would ply them with whisky and wine while encouraging them to talk about their sexual encounters.

At one of the gatherings, a victim recalls a man who also attended as a guest rating the boys in order of their attractiveness, to Dobbie’s “delight”.

On another occasion, after giving a girl alcohol, she came out of the bathroom to find Dobbie had undone his trousers and was “grinning at her”. Fearing that he wanted to have sex, she left the property.

After she left the school, she told her mother, who phoned housemaster Neil Flemming but no action was taken.

Dobbie took a boy as young as 12 to a bedroom, telling him to take off his breeches and underwear while Dobbie performed a sex act on himself.

Another boy recalled falling asleep on his sofa and waking up to find him kneeling beside him with his hand in his shirt.

Dobbie even helped to raise money for another pupil – who was abused over a period of six years – to take a gap year after leaving school and assaulted him when he returned for a visit.

Three other former members of staff at the school have been convicted of sex offences against pupils.

Peter Webb and Peter Burr were both jailed in the last year after admitting committing offences at the school between the 1960s and 1980s.

Sports coach Ajaz Karim was found guilty in April of assaulting six girls between 1985 and 1993 and is due to be sentenced in August.

Husband, 68, of Wigginton in York, was convicted of one count of rape and five of indecently assaulting a girl as young as 14 between 1990 and 1994. He insisted they had “consensual sex” once when she was 16.

He told a 15-year-old pupil: “It’s OK, I’ve had a vasectomy” before raping her, the court heard.

Ajaz Karim was found guilty of assaulting six girls between 1985 and 1993

Afterwards, he confided in Dobbie about the encounter, who later joked with the girl that she had “beard rash”, indicating that he knew what had happened. He also indecently assaulted the same pupil later on.

Husband’s victim “lay there like a rag doll” while he raped her and waited for it to be over, the jury was told.

She described being “disgusted with herself” and felt suicidal.

His victim reported him to the school’s chaplain but no action was taken. Even her mother did not believe her story.

Husband left the school after it emerged that he was having a consensual affair with a 17-year-old pupil who was not under-age and not a complainant in the case.

The married father, whose children were attending the school at the time, “deceived” senior staff by embarking on the fling, jurors heard.

The former tutor and head of department talked about the “spur-of-the-moment” encounter which involved several instances leading from holding hands and kissing to sex.

Giving evidence in his defence, he spoke of his desire to kiss her during a period when he felt disgruntled with how the school was being run.

In a diary entry read to the court, the girl said: “Told too many people at school then decided to go for it. The fling. So got off with him on Saturday night. The most amazing thing. Happy.”

Sussex Police began investigating teachers at the school in 2016 after allegations were made about Husband.

The cases, involving different victims and time periods, were treated as separate inquiries – apart from Dobbie and Husband, who were tried as co-defendants.

Publicity around the prosecutions prompted several more former pupils to come forward with complaints.

In October, barristers representing Burr, Karim, Dobbie and Husband tried to ban press coverage of court proceedings until all the cases had concluded – effectively attempting to delay publicity for the best part of a year – by claiming that it would be prejudicial to the defendants.

But Judge Christine Henson rejected the plea after it was challenged by Press Association in the public interest.

Aylin Hadarov – Beverley/Bulgaria

Man banned from ever returning to UK after sexually attacking boy, 14

A pervert who was already on the sexual offenders list lurked in a public toilet before attacking a teenage boy.

Aylin Hadarov, 33, of Beverley, was ‘fuelled with cocaine’ when he approached a 14-year-old boy and sexually assaulted him in the town’s train station toilets.

He said to the terrified youngster: ‘Let me suck your dick’ twice before pulling on the boy’s belt and stroking his left thigh.

The boy then shouted ‘what the fuck, no’ in a loud voice with the hope of being heard, only for Hadarov to make a shushing gesture towards him.

The boy felt trapped and Hadarov left soon after, with the boy then fleeing the toilets and collecting his bike from the racks.

He said he could feel his attacker staring at him from the platform.

Scared, the young boy called his girlfriend in tears and told her he had been sexually assaulted by a stranger.

Prosecuting at Hull Crown Court, Claire Holmes told the court the attack had deeply affected the victim, who is receiving counselling for the trauma Hadarov put him through.

She said: ‘The incident has affected the victim’s travel routine and he now immediately leaves the station and is worried about being there and is also scared to use the public toilets.

‘In McDonalds he used the toilet but had to get a friend to watch the door for him.

He’s also been having mood swings, a short temper and says he is difficult to deal with for his family and loved ones.

‘He’s finding it difficult at school and struggling with his work so much that his mum had to go into the school and explain what happened. ‘As soon as he found out that the defendant had been arrested, he felt relieved.

His confidence is coming back, and now he just wants to put it all behind him.’

After being comforted by his girlfriend, the boy then contacted his dad who was driving home from Doncaster and told him what had happened.

The court was told the boy’s father felt helpless as he was miles away and unable to comfort him face to face. Soon after, he called his mum and she took him to Beverley Police Station.

She said her son was agitated and upset and she was also upset thinking what might have happened.

Police released CCTV footage of the suspect at the train station and Hadarov was later identified by a member of the public at the bookies. He was arrested on October 14.

The court also heard that this was not Hadarov’s first sexual offence against teenage boys.

Back in his hometown in Bulgaria, on April 9, 2014, Hadarov received a two-and-a-half-year suspended sentence after he sexually abused a 14-year-old boy, threatened him with a knife and forced himself upon him.

Hadarov was also put on the sexual offenders list and banned him from being around boys under the age of 16, except with permission, for 10 years.

Ronald Lawes – Brentwood/Spain

March 2019

93-year-old locked up for sexually assaulting a young girl

A 93-year-old man has been sent to prison for a “sexually motivated” assault on a child nearly 30 years ago.

Ronald Lawes pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a child and appeared before appeared before Chelmsford Crown Court on Wednesday, March 13.

The assault took place in Brentwood in 1992 when Lawes, aged 67 at the time, kissed an 11-year-old girl and touched her under her clothing.

The case did not come to the attention of authorities until 2017 when the victim, now an adult, came forward.

Lawes, who now lives in Spain, appeared before the court in a wheelchair, wearing a blue and white striped shirt and a cream knitted jumper.

After standing when Judge Christopher Morgan entered the courtroom, Lawes fell to the floor.

He was helped back into his wheelchair and remained seated throughout the rest of the sentencing.

QC Christopher Paxton, prosecuting, told the court how the victim had only been 11 years old at the time of the assault.

Mr Paxton explained that Lawes kissed the girl and tried to put his tongue in her mouth.

The court heard how Lawes then put his hand under her clothing, touching her pubic bone and breast.

The victim managed to get away from him, which is when the court heard Lawes told the girl not to tell anyone, saying “this is our little secret”.

Mr Paxton read aloud from a statement from the victim, describing the impact the assault has had on her.

“The whole event 25 years ago has played on my mind since,” he said.

“From 11 to 18 I struggled with relationships, I didn’t think much of myself, lacked confidence, it had a massive impact on me.”

The statement went on to say how she has felt guilty over what happened and is now in counselling to help her “deal with the last 25 years”.

The victim contacted police in 2017 to report the assault and worked with Detective Constable Gemma Bristow, from the West Child Abuse Investigation Team.

The court heard how Lawes voluntarily presented himself to police for questioning, and that initially he did not accept the allegations against him.

He later pleaded guilty to the indecent assault of a child on March 12.

Judge Christopher Morgan, while sentencing, described the assault as “sexually motivated” after stating that Lawes tried to open the young girl’s legs.

He went on to say that Lawes knew what he had done was wrong through his plea to the child to keep it a secret.

Mr Morgan praised the woman’s courage in resisting the assault when she was a young girl, as well as in the years since, and in coming forward in 2017.

“The consequences on the victim are plain. She has felt traumatised over the years, and she speaks of the effect on her relationships,” he said.

Mr Morgan stated that Lawes’ age and health would not prevent him from receiving a custodial sentence, highlighting that in 2016 he had been described as an “extremely fit 90 year old”.

Mr Morgan sentenced Lawes to two years in jail, of which he will serve half and spend the rest on licence.

Keio Nei – Estonia/Liverpool

≈ Comments Off on Keio Nei – Estonia/Liverpool

January 2019

Stalker travelled across Europe to young woman’s home with “sinister” kit

A stalker sent an internet blogger horrific threats then travelled from Estonia to her home with a “sinister” kit including a “gold dildo”.

Keio Nei, 24, became so obsessed with the YouTube personality that she contacted police, who warned him via Estonian authorities to leave her alone.

But he sent more “disturbing” emails “loaded with sexual content”, in which he threatened to come to Merseyside to kidnap, torture, rape and kill her.

Nei then flew to the UK in April last year and sent the young woman tweets including photos of her home in Liverpool, before speaking to her dad.

He convinced Nei she did not live there – after spotting the stalker had both his and his wife’s names written down in a notepad – then called police.

Yet when officers came round the next day to drop off panic alarms on May 1, 2018, they spotted Nei, who fled and got into the back of a nearby car.

Nei, whose own dad was sitting in the driver’s seat, struggled with police, who managed to drag him out of the Skoda and arrested both men.

Inside the car they found a bag containing parcel tape, a screwdriver, brown gloves, an eye mask, a torch, a belt, a hip flask containing an ammonia solution, a syringe and needle, opera glasses, plastic flowers and an item described by police as “a gold coloured dildo”.

Liverpool Crown Court heard Nei sent the emails, in which he talked of “fate” wanting them to be together, between March and June 2017, then “mostly bizarre” tweets until November that year.

Kenneth Grant, prosecuting, said in one email, sent on March 8, 2017, he said he would fly to the UK the next year and “make it my life goal to find you and kill you”.

He said he would sneak into her home in the early hours of the morning, drug and kidnap her, wait until she woke up, then “shave you bald and strip you naked”.

Nei said: “I will rape you and make you pregnant and then I’ll tie you up and will torture you for hours, which is basically me using my whip and other tools I brought with me, to make you suffer and hopefully feel what I felt all these years.”

He added: “Then I guess I’ll just end it all and stab you in the chest with a kitchen knife and watch you slowly die.”

Nei’s dad was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, but the London-based businessman was released without charge.

His son confessed to telling the victim he was going to find her and “saw her legs off” and that he might be “a bit of a psycho”, but told police it was a “joke”.

He denied sending death threats, but accepted telling her he was a “troll” and asking her not to get engaged or to marry anyone.

The stalker told officers his dad had offered to take him to Liverpool as part of a holiday, but was unable to give any explanation for items including the tape, syringe or hip flask, before claiming the “dildo” was a “face massaging tool”.

Nei, who agreed he made a lot of effort to find his victim, admitted stalking, but denied it was with intent to commit a sexual offence.

He stood trial, but after police told the jury they did not think he was carrying the bag when chased, prosecutors dropped the charge.

They accepted had he intended to commit a sexual offence he would not have been with his dad, an international furniture dealer.

Nei, of no fixed address, instead admitted a second count of stalking and sentencing was adjourned for psychiatric reports.

Judge Clement Goldstone, QC, said Nei caused the woman “untold distress and fear” and described the March 8 email as “graphic and terrifying”.

He said Nei saw a “golden opportunity” when his dad was visiting Liverpool to seek out his victim and was caught with “very sinister” items.

The judge accepted there might be an “innocent explanation” if the items were each taken in isolation.

But he said: “I have no doubt that their location together was devised by you because there was, within a very warped and sick mind, something that could have led at some stage to something far more serious than that for which you face sentence.”

Judge Goldstone accepted “the last person in the world” Nei would have had with him, if intending to commit a sexual offence, was his dad.

But he told Nei “it was no joke to her and it was utterly terrifying” when he “travelled halfway across Europe” with his victim “in your sights”.

Judge Goldstone said cyber stalking was “a plague of the 21st Century” and his victim was left unable to sleep, with “her trust shattered”.

He jailed Nei for 21 months and made an indefinite restraining order.

Chase Fowler – USA/Lakenheath

Cheerleading coach jailed for naked Snapchat photo to girl, 13

An American cheerleading coach who sent a naked Snapchat photo of himself to a girl in his class has been jailed.

Chase Fowler of Back Street in Lakenheath, Suffolk worked in Cambridgeshire when he sent the photo to the 13-year-old after she refused to send one of herself on 17 August.

In a police interview, he claimed he was a “cheer-lebrity” and would travel the world to volunteer as a coach.

Fowler, 27, was jailed for 12 months after admitting engaging in sexual communication with a child.

Peterborough Crown Court was told that after receiving the naked picture of her coach, the girl was embarrassed and did not tell anyone initially.

Later that month a friend tried to convince her to tell someone, but she was concerned there was no evidence as the photo had disappeared from Snapchat.

The court heard the girl later messaged Fowler about the photo and asked him “do you know it’s illegal?”, to which he responded “yes, I’m sorry”.

She then said “do you realise you sent a 13-year-old a nude photo?” and he asked if she had saved the photo.

He was arrested the following day and a mobile phone seized by police revealed details of a relationship with a 14-year-old girl in Texas.

The court heard the conversations were “suggestive” and had a “sexual tone”.

Fowler admitted two counts of engaging in sexual communication with a child and two counts of making indecent photographs of a child.

Judge David Farrell QC called it the “most appalling breach of trust – you knew how old they were”.

As well as his jail term, he was given a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and will be deported to the United States once he is released.
