Convicted paedophile lived in Worcester for six months without telling police

A convicted paedophile, who moved to Worcester and lived in the city for six months without telling the police, was jailed by a judge who said the public would demand the punishment.

Daniel Chant, who was put on the Sex Offenders Register after being convicted of five offences of sexual activity with a child, pleaded guilty on Friday at Worcester Crown Court to failing to comply with the notification requirements, in that he didn’t inform police of a change of address.

Jason Aris, prosecuting, explained Chant received a jail sentence of 42 months at Southampton Crown Court in 2007 for the offences, and the convictions led to him being placed on the register for life.

Mr Aris said: “On June 17, 2020, DC Holloway carried out a visit to the registered address of the defendant.

“The occupant indicated the defendant had moved out on January 24, 2020, six months previous.”

Mr Aris said after police checks they discovered Chant had moved to a new address in Richmond Road, Worcester, with police finally able to update their records.

Mr Aris said an aggravating feature was that Chant’s latest offence was his fourth failure to comply with the requirements, highlighting offences on July 28, 2016, and November 6, 2017 when Chant had both times failed to tell police of a change of his address.

“There has been a deliberate failure to comply,” the prosecutor added.

Nicole Steers, defending Chant, explained that a year ago he and his family including six children had been living in Southampton but after a dispute with their landlord they were forcefully evicted.

“They had to make arrangements at very short notice to move elsewhere,” Miss Steers said.

“They managed to find somewhere in Worcester, where his family’s partner lived and with everything going on he struggled with anxiety.

“He had forgotten, and then time dragged on.”

Miss Steers explained a custodial sentence would heavily impact the family as his partner was supporting them financially after Chant lost his job during lockdown.

“His responsibility is to look after the children during the current climate, while she works,” Miss Steers said.

A letter from Chant’s partner was then given to the judge to read, which Judge James Burbridge described as a “cry from the heart”.

“He moved he didn’t tell officers, he apologies and says it wasn’t a deliberate act,” Miss Steers added.

Sentencing Chant to 36 weeks in prison the judge said: “There is understandable public disquiet about the movements and residence of people who have committed offences on children.

“You have taken a cavalier approach to the orders of the court.

“You are 40-year-old man with considerable responsibilities.

“It (the jail sentence) is going to cause significant family problems.

“The public would demand I lock you up.”

Chant showed no emotion as he was taken down.

Update: Sentenced was reduced to eight years. Johnson was released after servijng four years in prison

November 2016

Redditch man Neil Johnson jailed for rape and sex offences

A Redditch man has been jailed for eight years for rape and other sex offences.

Neil Johnson, aged 43, chose to defend himself and pleaded guilty at Worcester Crown Court to two charges of rape against the same woman dating back to 2011.

Johnson, of Slimbridge Close, Redditch, also pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual assault and one of harassment.

Siobhan Collins, prosecuting, told the court Johnson, a father-of-two, had been having psychiatric treatment for depression and alcohol addiction following the breakdown of his marriage when he met the woman, who also had mental health issues.

She told her hairdresser and her psychologist what had happened and in June 2014 she contacted the police.

Johnson was arrested but said he could not remember because he had memory problems caused by his treatment. He initially denied the offences but later went voluntarily to confess after a session with his counsellor, Miss Collins said.

In a victim impact statement, the woman said she felt “dirty and no good” as a result of the offences.

Judge Robert Juckes, QC, said Johnson would be given credit for taking the unusual step of pleading guilty in such a case and sparing his victim a court appearance.

He was given a total of eight years and ordered to sign the sex offenders register until further notice.

Pervert caught in underage Facebook sex sting

A pervert asked for sexually explicit photos of underage girls after a group set up fake Facebook profiles to snare would-be child groomers.

Andrew Thomson, of Brookthorpe Close, Warndon, Worcester, made sexually explicit requests and gave out his phone number, believing he was talking to girls aged under 16.

In reality he was in contact with a group called ‘Guardians of the North’ who had set up fake Facebook profiles.

The 48-year-old admitted six counts of attempting or causing a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity.

Martin Liddiard, prosecuting, said the Guardians of the North, based in the North East, set up the fake Facebook profiles of girls aged between 11 and 14 with photographs and information about the schools they attended before waiting and monitoring any friend requests, ensuring contact was first made by the offender.

He said the purpose of these profiles was to identify ‘online sexual groomers’.

Thomson made friend requests to six profiles, all purporting to be of girls aged between 13 and 14 years.

Mr Liddiard said: “They were fortunately fake names and false profiles of non-existent young girls.

“Grooming is a significant part of what the offence is in itself.”

Messages sent by Thomson to some of the ‘girls’ included ‘are you a virgin?’ and ‘how large are your breasts?’

He also expressed a desire to have sex with the girls, asked them about a ‘threesome’ and if they wanted to know how big his penis was.

He also asked if they could take part in a ‘video chat’ over his laptop and asked questions about their ‘private parts’.

Mr Liddiard said: “Slightly more sinister is asking for phone numbers and handing out his own phone number.”

The Guardians contacted police on January 21, 2017 and told them they were outside the defendant’s Worcester address at 6am.

They handed over a sample of their evidence, including a USB drive, to police. They found Thomson by consulting the electoral roll, Mr Liddiard said.

When interviewed by police he said there was ‘nothing he wished to say’. He had been of previous good character.

Thomson pleaded not guilty on October 5 last year but was the case was listed for pre-trial review on February 27 this year when he changed his plea to guilty.

Judge Jim Tindal said: “It’s a case which goes beyond sexual chat because it relates to providing his telephone number. It wasn’t pure fantasy.”

Addressing the defendant directly he said: “At the time of this offence you were a sad, lonely, isolated man with very little confidence.

“The fact that these were actual vigilantes pretending to be young girls has an impact of course on the case. No child was put at risk but this behaviour demonstrates that you are a risk.

“If you were prepared to do it once the thinking is you might be prepared to do it again and next time they might be real children you’re chatting with.”

However, he said there was ‘strong personal mitigation’ and ‘a realistic prospect of rehabilitation’, describing Thomson as having led ‘a troubled life’.

He said an immediate prison sentence would only increase Thomson’s sense of being ‘ostracised’, arguing it was ‘far safer for the community’ to have him confront his offending with the assistance of courses.

Judge Tindal jailed Thomson for 18 months but suspended the sentence for two years. He must complete 25 rehabilitation activity days.

A sexual harm prevention order which restricts his contact with children and use of the internet was made for a period of 10 years. He must also sign the sex offender register, also for a period of 10 years, and pay a £250 contribution towards court costs.

The judge made a forfeiture and destruction order in relation to the devices seized from Thomson by police when they searched his home.
