Hereford paedophile jailed for string of sex offences

A paedophile who groomed three young boys, encouraged others to get undressed online and filmed children in swimming pool changing rooms has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

Mark Smith touched the three young boys, all younger than 12, at his Hereford home where he masturbated in front of them after enticing them in with a game of darts.

The judge at Worcester Crown Court on Friday said Smith, 55, was “hiding a dark secret” and he had “blatant paedophilia tendencies” after the offences with the boys, which included sexually touching them and pulling their trousers down.

The offences only came to light when one of the boys was talking to his friend’s mother and the police were called.

Prosecution barrister Alexandra Ball said after Smith, of Grandstand Road, was arrested and two laptops were seized.

On there, police found 263 category B indecent pictures and videos, and 53 category C. These showed children aged between eight and 16 with adult men.

Ms Ball said the people were in “various states of undress”, and Smith had superimposed himself on some of the pictures.

She said Smith also used an online chat website which randomly pairs strangers, where he encouraged children to take their clothes off and had conversations which were “sexual in nature”.

They also found footage from the changing rooms of a public swimming pool, although it was not clear which one, where Smith used hidden cameras to record people getting changed.

She said the recordings, believed to have been made some time ago, were captured by hiding a camera in a bag he was carrying, or by sliding the phone underneath stalls. In some videos, Smith could be at the beginning of some videos.

Smith pleaded guilty to 13 offences, including sexually touching the three boys, making indecent photographs, and recording a person doing a private act for his own sexual gratification. He entered a not guilty plea for a 14th charge, but this was not pursued by prosecutors.

Sentencing Smith to a total of nine years in prison, Judge James Burbridge said the offences had long-lasting effects on the victims, and in some cases they lasted for life.

He made Smith the subject of an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, he will sign the sex offenders register and pay a victim surcharge.

Pervert carried out a sexual act on himself in front of a child

A sex offender who carried out a sexual act on himself in front of a child by the river in Hereford is free on bail.

David Power admitted exposure and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child when he appeared at Worcester Crown Court today (Wednesday).

The 31-year-old, of Pulley Avenue, Eaton Bishop, pleaded guilty to carrying out both offences on August 2, 2018.

The offences involved him, for the purpose of sexual gratification, performing a sexual act upon himself “by the river in Hereford” in the presence of a child under 16, knowing or intending the child should be aware that he was engaged in that activity.

The case was prosecuted by Timothy Sapwell, who appeared over videolink. Jason Aris appeared in person at court on behalf of Power.

Judge Martin Jackson adjourned the case so a pre-sentence report could be prepared, granting bail on condition Power co-operate with the probation service in the preparation of that report.

Power faces an additional exposure charge from January this year, a case to which his advocate said he is expected to plead guilty at Kidderminster Magistrates Court on May 12.

“I anticipate a guilty plea to that allegation as well,” said Mr Aris.

In relation to the crown court matters, Mr Aris explained that he had had a “productive conference with his client last week” and had given him “clear advice about the strength of the evidence” and that, as a result, he now wished to change his pleas to guilty.

The judge warned Power that, as a convicted sex offender, notification requirements now applied and that he must register with the police within the next three days.

Power was told he must provide details to police, including his name, date of birth, any aliases he used, his National Insurance number, and any other addresses he used.

“If you fail to comply with notification requirements, that is a criminal offence in its own right carrying up to five years in prison,” the judge warned.

Judge Jackson also told the defendant that if he changed his address or any other detail he must notify police.

The sentence hearing was adjourned until June 16.

Jailed: The scoutmaster caught with indecent images of children

A Scout leader has been jailed after indecent images of children were found on his mobile phone during a raid at a business.

David Brian Buckle appeared at Crown Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to making, possessing, and distributing indecent and prohibited images between August 2019 and November 2020 before Hereford magistrates on February 3.

Police had descended on a trading estate on November 23 to execute a warrant at Hereford Radiators, prosecuting barrister Sharon Bahia told the court.

Officers informed staff that company computers had been used to upload indecent images of children to the internet, but when employees were asked to hand over their mobile phones, Buckle was reported to have gone white and started shaking.

When asked for his mobile phone, which was in a room upstairs, 49-year-old scoutmaster Buckle refused, and attempted to snap the device in half.

Examination of the two phones and a laptop seized from Buckle revealed evidence of an interest in indecent pictures in his browsing history and multiple pornographic images involving children.

In total, there were nine category A photographs, 25 category A videos, nine category B photographs, 36 category B videos, 24 category C photographs and seven category C videos, all involving children aged between three and 13.

“The same phone showed he had distributed images on chats he was having on messaging service, Kik,” Ms Bahia said.

“There were also three prohibited images which involved a child with no clothes on and a computer generated man.”

In interview, Buckle told police he had sent messages but would not have said they were indecent, and that he thought the children in the images were over 18.

“He said that he was a scout leader and that the phone was not really his. He said he had looked at adult pornography, and that he had reacted the way he did because he did not want to be caught with adult porn,” Ms Bahia said.

Messages on the phone showed Buckle boasting of having had sex with a 13 year old when he had been “a lot younger” and that he had shared images and videos with others.

Delivering his verdict, Judge Nicholas Cartwright told Buckle the images showed real rapes and real sexual offences being committed against real children and that is was clear his conversations online had been boastful.

“This was not an exchange of images for shock value, or to let someone else know how ghastly they were. You thought you were satisfying their wish for sexual purposes.”

“As well as any physical harm that may arise and the inevitable psychological harm that is bound to follow, these victims will live the rest of their lives knowing that there are films and recordings of these offences being committed against them,” he said.

“That must be a heavy burden.”

Buckle, of Maidstone Close, Newton Farm, was jailed for a total of 18 months. He must also pay a surcharge.

A paedophile has been sentenced to ten years after a jury found him guilty of attacking a very young girl

Steven Johns, 39 of Hereford appeared at Worcester Crown Court where he was found guilty of:

Assault of a child under the age of 13 with penetration

The court was told that Johns who lives in Hereford but also has links to Malvern in Worcestershire committed a depraved and vile sexual offence against the young girl.

The judge sentenced Johns to ten years imprisonment with an extended licence period of one year

A sexual harm prevention order was imposed until further notice and he was told to register as a sex offender for life

Jamie Turley appeared at Worcester Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to the following charges:

Abduction of a Child
