Paedophile teacher banned from classrooms ‘indefinitely’

A teacher who taught kids aged 10 to 11 years old has been banned from teaching indefinitely after sending sexual messages to a girl he thought to be 13 and possessing indecent images of children.

Daniel Butterfield, 36, of Portland Road, Kingston , sent sexually explicit messages on an online messenger app between June and August 2018.

What he didn’t realise though was that he was really talking to a police officer.

Butterfield sent explicit images of himself, and requested indecent images in return.

He also made arrangements to meet with the ‘girl’.

Police found evidence of 113 indecent images and videos of young children on the device. Some of those images were designated Category A, which is the most severe rating.

Butterfield was first charged last October 2019 at Kingston Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to 13 sexual offences.

He was sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years.

He was also subjected to a 10 year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and placed on the Sex Offender Register.

Ban for former Westbourne House School teacher Gareth Rees

A former teacher who looked at a “paedophile handbook” has been banned from the classroom.

Gareth Rees, 32, who worked at a prestigious private school, was caught with indecent images on his phone.

Mr Rees, who taught children of primary school age at Westbourne House, also took part in sick online chats.

The allegations relate to his internet activity and not children at the school, where parents pay up to £19,000-a-year.

Mr Rees, who has since resigned, faced a disciplinary hearing where he was accused of having a sexual interest in children.

Mr Rees denied a string of allegations, dating from October 2016 to February 2017, but did not attend the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) hearing.

He was accused of using terms such as “young nudist”, “pederasty” and “pre-teen” during online searches.

He was also accused of taking part in a discussion on social media relating to children engaging in sexual activity.

A social media exchange – in which he said “that’s so naughty but I’m turned on by it…is that wrong?” – appeared to relate to children engaged in sexual activity, the TRA said.

Mr Rees told police that he opened the “paedophile handbook” but closed it after two minutes, described the contents as “horrible” and stating he did not download it.

Furthermore, two images found on his phone were classed as Category A and five classed as Category B, according to a statement from an officer.

Mr Rees said he remembered seeing “age questionable” material on an adult chat site he was using.

He also remembered seeing images on his phone downloaded unintentionally and deleted them straight away.

He left his position in March 2017 – the same month he was arrested.

However, Mr Rees was found not guilty at a criminal trial in December of that year.

After considering all the evidence, the TRA panel found the allegation that he had a sexual interest in children to be proven.

Mr Rees was given an indefinite ban from teaching.

In a report, the panel said: “Mr Rees has demonstrated no insight or remorse having denied the allegations in their entirety.

“His failure to report the online material he had seen failed to recognise that there was a victim whose welfare needed to be safeguarded.

“The panel was, therefore, concerned at the risk of repetition given the behaviours that have been exhibited by Mr Rees.”

Pervert ex-teacher William Preece, 32, tells schoolgirl ‘love being naughty’ in sick sex chat

A former teacher who had sex chats with underage girls online and had images of child abuse was snared in a police sting.

William Preece had sex chats with four underage girls before messaging an undercover police officer who was posing as a 14-year-old girl

The 32-year-old was handed a three-year community order after pleading guilty to five counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, one count of inciting a girl aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity and two counts of making indecent images of children.

He was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register and made the subject of a five-year sexual harm prevention order.

Prosecutor Catherine Duffy said an undercover police officer was posing as a teenager called ‘JS’ when Preece messaged the profile in August 2018.

She said the profile had been set to the minimum age of 18 and Preece’s first message asked the ‘girl’ her age.

The officer replied saying the girl was 14 and Preece asked: “Like older guys?”

Their conversation continued and Preece asked the ‘girl’ to send him a photo so she sent him a photo of her face.

Later that month, the ‘girl’ messaged him saying: “I am well younger than you”.

He responded saying he used to be a teacher and the conversation turned to birth control before he said: “Think a preggo 14-year-old might be hard to explain haha”.

He also asked her to wear her school uniform to meet him.

Officers attended his home on Novale Way in Wakefield in October that year. He was arrested and taken to a police station. His house was searched and a number of devices were seized, including a tablet and a computer tower.

In his police interview, he said his partner was not as ‘sexual’ as him and when she went to work he felt aroused so he would chat to younger females online.

He claimed he would end the conversation if they were under the age of 16 and meeting up with ‘JS’ was only a fantasy.

He also denied that other conversations with children or indecent images would be found on his devices.

But Ms Duffy said he had sexual conversations with four other young girls, including one in which he suggested having sex with a 15-year-old before she ‘turned legal’.

He told another 15-year-old: “Love being naughty haha. Hope you can keep secrets. Send pics.” He also asked her if she would let him have sex with her.

She said police tried to identify the victims but could not due to the passage of time.

Ms Duffy said police also found indecent images on his devices. Six videos were in the most serious category.

She said he had also visited more than 60 pornorgraphy websites with the word ‘young’ in the URL. Some included the words ‘school fun’ and ‘underage’.

In his second police interview, Preece said he thought he had been talking to females in their late teens and early 20s and he did not know there were any indecent images of children on his devices.

Preece, now of Garlick Street, Brighouse, had no convictions prior to this case.

Preece’s community order includes requirements to complete 25 days of rehabilitation activity, 31 sessions of a sex offender treatment programme and 150 hours of unpaid work.

IT teacher had sex with 15-year-old boy he met on Grindr

A disgraced teacher has been jailed after grooming a 15-year-old boy he met through a dating app.

Craig Slater was working as an IT teacher at Byrchall High School, in Ashton-in-Makerfield, when he first made contact with his victim on Grindr, prosecution barrister Ben Lawrence told Bolton Crown Court.

The court heard that Slater, 40, then groomed the boy in a ‘sophisticated and highly effective manner’ between June and November 2019.

Despite the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, listing his age as 18 on the app, sick Whatsapp messages retrieved from Slater’s phone proved that he knew his true age before meeting him.

In the depraved conversations, Slater described himself as a ‘sex-obsessed pervert’ and said it wouldn’t be a problem if the boy turned up to one of their meetings in his school uniform.

Slater used a fake name – Andrew Spilter – and would often sexualise regular conversations. When the boy expressed his reservations, he said: ‘It makes me feel like I’m coercing you into it’.

Mr Lawrence submitted that this response was a sophisticated grooming method.

Slater, who is in an open relationship, also told the boy that he wouldn’t be telling his partner about their relationship because it was ‘technically naughty’.

Slater told the victim ‘I don’t want to wait until then’, after the boy revealed when his 16th birthday was.

Slater bought his victim gifts, suggested he could book them a hotel room, and on at least one occasion sent a lengthy message indicating that he had romantic feelings for him.

They swapped explicit photographs and videos and eventually met up for sexual activity on three occasions.

Police became aware of Slater’s crimes in May 2020, when the boy named him during enquiries into an unrelated matter.

Officers seized Slater’s phone and he was arrested.

On his phone, there were 19 indecent images of the boy – one category A, two category B and 16 category C.

During his police interview, Slater told police that he had believed the boy was 18-years-old, because of his Grindr profile.

He also told officers that he didn’t believe that the boy was actually 15 and thought that it was just ‘fantasy’.

Slater admitted that he was attracted to ‘young trendy guys’, aged between 17 and early 20s, and when asked about one of the occasions he had sex, he said: ‘It wasn’t my finest hour.’

He pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a child, three counts of possessing indecent images of a child, engaging in sexual communication with a child, inciting a child to watch sexual activity, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Sentencing Slater to five years and three months imprisonment, the judge Recorder Alex Leach described the offences as ‘reprehensible’.

He added: ‘During your dialogue with him, you groomed him in a sophisticated and highly effective manner, drawing him into performing sexual acts, both over the internet and in person, for your gratification.

‘The fact that you worked as a teacher, the fact that you must’ve understood the impact that this type of offending could have upon teenage boys, the fact that you understood the safeguarding and particular vulnerability associated with someone the age of the complainant neutralises any mitigation you might otherwise have been able to draw from your long service as a teacher.’

A Sexual Harm Prevention Order has been imposed on Slater until further notice and he will have to sign the sex offenders register for life.

Three men jailed for sexually abusing girl

A teacher is one of three men to have been jailed for sexually abusing a girl in unconnected incidents 20 years ago.

Mark Craster-Chambers, 54, kissed and engaged in sexual acts with the girl when she was a 16-year-old pupil, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

The girl had previously been sexually abused when she was by 13 by Gordon Holliday, 60, and taxi driver Carl Morgan Donnelly, 63.

All three were found guilty of offences against the girl.

The court heard that for many years the victim did not realise what had happened was abuse and only reported it to police recently.

Craster-Chambers, of Preston on Stour, near Stratford-upon-Avon, was found guilty of engaging in sexual activity while in a position of trust, Donnelly, of The Ferns, Egremont, was convicted of three indecent assault charges and Holliday, of Howbank Road, Egremont, of one indecent assault.

“My whole life has been tainted by their actions,” the woman – who attended their sentencing hearing – said in a statement read in court by a detective.

She said: “I feel they have robbed me of the remaining years of my childhood, of my education and possible future.”

Of Craster-Chambers, she added: “He was my teacher; he should have known better. Because of him I have spent my whole life anxious around people in positions of trust like doctors, therapists and even in job interviews. I hope he never gets to look after vulnerable children again.”

Recorder Richard Archer jailed Donnelly for six years, Holliday for 42 months and Craster-Chambers for 18 months.

To Craster-Chambers, who rose to the position of deputy head during 26 years in a teaching profession he left in 2016, Recorder Archer said: “You knew full well, in light of the high professional regard in which you were otherwise held, what the law was and why it existed. You broke that law and broke her trust.”

All three men must sign the sex offenders’ register and will be barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.
