Update: Sentenced to nine years and ordered to register as a sex offender for life

March 2019

Ex-care home boss who played Strip Jack Naked card game with boy found guilty of historic child sex offences

A former social worker has been found guilty of 10 historic sexual assault charges.

Huw Meurig Jones, 69, of Penybryn, Old Colwyn, had denied 13 counts of sexually abusing two boys between June 1975 and October 1978.

Last week, Judge Niclas Parry gave directions to the jury that they should find him not guilty of two charges against one of the former residents of an assessment centre where he was alleged to have committed the offences.

However, a jury of six men and six women took three hours to find him guilty of 10 of the remaining 11 charges at Mold Crown Court on Monday afternoon.

He was cleared of one count of serious sexual assault against a youth in Colwyn Bay in the 1970s.

Judge Parry said: “I know that you will have been fully advised and that you know only a significant custodial sentence can follow conviction in this trial.”

Jones had pleaded not guilty to four charges of indecency with a child and four charges of indecent assault against a male person – a former resident of Little Acton Assessment Centre in Wrexham in the 1970s.

He also denied three indecent assaults on a male person and two charges of a serious sexual assault against a boy in his care in  Colwyn Bay  in the 1970s.

Jones’ work brought him into contact with vulnerable children at Little Acton, then as a social worker in Wrexham  for Clwyd County Council and later in Colwyn Bay.

The court heard that both alleged victims, who were said not to know each other, made separate complaints about Jones in 1992 during a previous police investigation.

It was only when historic sex abuse investigation Operation Pallial reopened the files and contacted complainants that allegations were looked into again by the National Crime Agency.

The first victim said he neither wanted nor consented to the activity, and the second boy said he was invited to play cards with Jones, who was then a social worker, at his flat in Colwyn Bay.

The court heard Jones gave him cigarettes and they played Gin Rummy and Strip Jack Naked – a card game which ends in the forfeit of removing clothes.

They continued playing and the defendant performed a sex act on the boy and demanded the same was done to him.

Jones told police he couldn’t think of any reason why the boy would make false allegations about him.

Judge Parry remanded Jones in custody overnight, with sentencing due to take place in Mold on Tuesday.

March 2019: Mooney was placed on a probation bond for two years

Man (22) who ‘catfished’ teenage boys into sharing explicit pictures of themselves to be sentenced for possessing child abuse images

A Dublin man who engaged in “catfishing” to lure teenage boys into sharing explicit images of themselves online will be sentenced early next year.

Garda revealed that Ben Mooney (22) used the name “Nicole Heffernon” to email and contact teenage boys through Facebook.

Garda explained that Mooney had been “catfishing”, which is pretending to be someone else online, to obtain images of boys in their underwear and naked. The garda said there were also videos of the teenagers masturbating.

Mooney later told gardaí that he had contacted up to 15 teenage boys in the two years before he was caught.

Mooney, of Rathsallagh Park, Shankill, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to knowingly possessing child porn and possessing 4,000 images and 300 videos of child porn on a Samsung mobile phone at his home on January 5, 2016. He has no previous convictions.

Gda Tracey told Genevieve Coonan BL, prosecuting, the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in America contacted gardaí about two email addresses sharing child porn.

One of these email addresses was in the name Nicole Heffernon and the other belonged to a 16-year-old boy.

During the investigation, gardaí spoke with this boy, along with two other males aged 16 and 15 years. They told officers that a person pretending to be a 16-year-old girl had contacted them through Facebook and had been sending them explicit material.

Gda Tracey said the IP address for the Nicole Heffernon email led back to Mooney’s home. He and colleagues got a search warrant for the premises, where Mooney and his parents were present.

Mooney asked his parents to leave him with gardaí and then admitted he had contacted up to 15 teenage boys over the last two years.

Gda Tracey said Mooney gave officers a number of emails, with which he had communicated with other suspected paedophiles through a Russian website. Gardaí also seized two mobile phones and a computer hard drive during the search.

Gda Tracey told Ms Coonan that 70 per cent of the 6,000 images on the phones was a mixture of pornography and child pornography. He said the child porn images fell onto the lower two levels of the scale and consisted of children posing erotically, solo masturbation and sexual activity between minors.

He said a “huge percentage” of the material involved young males between ten to 16 years old.

Gda Tracey agreed with Seán Guerin SC, defending, that Mooney made full admissions before forensic analysis had been done on the computer hard drive. He accepted that Mooney had been 19 years old at the time and that he had been struggling with his sexuality.

He further agreed that Mooney seems to have turned his life around, noting that he was “staying up all night playing computer games and sleeping all day” at the time.

Judge Melanie Greally ordered a report from The Probation Service and adjourned the sentence to January, when she will hear a plea in mitigation from Mr Guerin.

December 2018

Oakham man sentenced for sexual abuse against young girls

An Oakham man has been given a six year custodial sentence after pleading guilty to a number of sexual offences against six young girls.

In October, Ryan Steadman, 20, of Stud Road, Barleythorpe, Oakham, pleaded guilty to 11 counts against six victims at Leicester Crown Court.

The pleas relate to five counts of causing a child aged 13 to 15 to watch a sexual act, four counts of inciting a child aged 13 to 15 to engage in sexual activity and two counts of sexual activity with a child, aged 13 to 14.

The offences happened between 2015 and 2018.

Steadman was originally charged with 39 counts against 11 victims

At Leicester Crown Court today (December 14), Steadman was given a six year custodial sentence, an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) and ordered to be on the sex offenders register for life.

Steadman was arrested in February this year when officers received information from another police force that a 14-year-old girl had travelled to Leicestershire to meet with Steadman after chatting on social media.

It was alleged that while in Oakham, Steadman had engaged in sexual activity with the girl.

Paedophile abused girls as young as 13 after befriending them on Snapchat

Ryan Steadman

A man committed sex offences against six different underage girls as young as 13 after befriending them on Snapchat.

Ryan Steadman had originally been charged with a total of 39 offences against 11 different girls and at Leicester Crown Court yesterday he admitted charges relating to six of them.

The 20-year-old, of Stud Road, Barleythorpe, Oakham, was first arrested in February this year when Leicestershire Police received information from another force that a 14-year-old girl had travelled to Oakham to meet with Steadman after chatting on social media and that they had engaged in sexual activity.

After being questioned by detectives he was released from custody while the investigation continued and further allegations were discovered.

The 11 admitted offences, which happened between 2015 and 2018, are:

  • Five counts of causing a child under 15 to watch a sexual act

  • Four counts of inciting a child under 15 to engage in sexual activity

  • Two counts of sexual activity with a child, aged 13 to 14

The other 28 offences that he did not admit will lie on file, which means he has not been cleared of them but that it is not considered in the interests of justice to pursue them.

Steadman will be sentenced at a later date.

Simon Fuge – Llanelli

September 2018

Paedophile used fake Facebook profile of teen girl to lure schoolboy into sex abuse

Simon Fuge

A man in his 30s used a fake Facebook profile of a teenage girl to lure a schoolboy into sexual activity with him.

After tricking the boy into a meeting Simon Fuge then spent weeks buying the boy gifts – including sweets and a trip to the cinema – before performing a sex act on him.

The alarm was sounded when a friend of the boy became aware he had spent the night at Fuge’s house and told a teacher about his concerns.

Swansea Crown Court heard the schoolboy met someone called Danni, who appeared to be a girl between 16 and 18, on Facebook and the pair began chatting via the Messenger service.

After a while they agreed to meet but Danni did not turn up for the rendezvous.

Robin Rouch, prosecuting, said Danni then got in touch with the 14-year-old boy and told him her friend Simon lived nearby and he could go there to wait for her.

The court heard the boy went to 37-year-old Fuge’s house and the defendant pretended to be a friend of Danni.

The pair spent the afternoon playing computer games to pass the time until the boy’s date arrived – but she never did.

Fuge and the boy exchanged contact details and over the following weeks began communicating on Snapchat.

They also met a number of times, usually to play computer games, but on one occasion they went to the cinema while on another they went shopping in Swansea when the defendant bought the boy a new coat.

The prosecutor said Fuge then began making sexual suggestions to the boy and on one occasion pretended to be receiving text messages from his “friend” Danni which said she would like to see a video of them perform sex acts together.

The court heard that all the while Fuge also continued messaging the boy on Facebook as Danni and maintained the pretence that she wanted a relationship with him.

On two occasions while they were alone Fuge performed a sex act on the boy.

The defendant’s activities came to light after the boy spent a night at his house and was given alcohol to drink.

No sexual activity took place on that occasion but he mentioned the sleepover to a school friend who then told a teacher.

The court heard Fuge was arrested at the house he shared with his mother and initially denied there had been any sexual contact with the boy.

After requesting information from Facebook the police were able to identity the computer used to post to the “Danni” account and it was linked to Fuge’s post code.

With the help of internet provider Sky police were then able to identify the wifi router used at the relevant times.

Mr Rouch said Fuge’s communications with the boy on Snapchat were no longer able to be viewed but they checked the “Danni” Facebook profile and found it had also been used to contact other individuals and not just the victim in the case.

Fuge, of Marine Street, Llanelli , admitted two counts of inciting a child to engage in penetrative sexual activity.

In an impact statement read to the court his young victim said he had not been himself since his encounter with Fuge, adding that he socialised with friends less and was wary of communicating with people online.

Judge Paul Thomas QC told Fuge he had “badgered” the boy and “wore him down psychologically”.

He said it was clear Fuge had led a “sheltered, maybe even stifled, life” that had not allowed him a suitable outlet for his sexual development.

Fuge was jailed for a total of four and a half years. He will serve half that time in custody before being released on licence.

Fuge was also made the subject of a lifelong sexual harm prevention order to control his internet use and his access to children and will be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life.

Teenager sentenced for string of child sex offences

A teenager from Warrington has been sentenced after admitting 25 child sex offences.

William Powner, from Woolston, pretended to be a teenage girl so he could sexually exploit young boys online.

The 18-year-old systematically targeted boys as young as nine years old and made them engage in sexual activity via multiple social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.

The teenager contacted nine victims, including eight from Warrington, via private messages and incited them to send him indecent pictures and videos of themselves, usually on the promise that their actions would be reciprocated.

He screen-recorded the photographs and videos he received and threatened to send them to friends of the victim – identified from their social media accounts – unless they agreed to his requests to engage in sexual acts and send him further indecent photographs and videos.

In one case he put an indecent video of a victim on Instagram when his demands were not met.

As well as the nine known victims, the teenager used an online chat website, where users can communicate with others anonymously, to sexually exploit further victims from all over the world.

He used this as another way to trick young boys into giving him indecent pictures and videos of themselves.

The teenager would then claim to have the software needed to find out who the victim is and where they live and try to blackmail them into performing sexual acts on a webcam.

The teenager was caught when victims told their parents what had been happening to them.

The extent of his offending was uncovered when police seized and examined his laptop and tablet. They contained a large number of indecent images of children.

The teenager pleaded guilty to all 25 charges he faced at Chester Youth Court on Wednesday 14 March.

He was sentenced at Chester Crown Court on Tuesday 17 July.

The judge handed him a three-year youth rehabilitation order and a year-long curfew order with electronic monitoring.

Powner was also ordered to adhere to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and to sign the sex offenders’ register for two years and six months.

Becky Millyard, a Police Constable at Cheshire Police, said: “The teenager tricked, manipulated and blackmailed boys aged nine to 17 in order to fulfil his own sexual gratification.

“His actions have had a profound impact on his victims and will affect them for the rest of their lives.
