Grindr ‘younger bottoms’ pervert snared by online paedophile hunters

A pervert met a 15-year-old boy over a dating app and travelled to Derby to meet the underage boy for sex.

But when Julian Collins arrived at Midland railway station, “Rob” was really self-styled paedophile hunters.

Derby Crown Court heard how the 44-year-old also sent the decoy a picture of his private parts saying he was “looking for younger bottoms”.

And he wept tears of relief in the dock when he was told he would not be going to prison.

Handing Collins a 12-month jail term, suspended for two years, Judge Jonathan Bennett said: “You have escaped custody by the skin of your teeth.

“You started communicating on a legitimate website with someone who told you they were 15. You made all of the reassuring comments when the decoy indicated he was shy.

“You indicated to the decoy that he would enjoy it. These are extremely serious offences.”

Stephen Kemp, prosecuting, said the paedophile hunter group set up Rob’s profile on Grindr in January, 2020.

He said on January 30, that account received its first message from Collins who asked Rob how old he was.

Mr Kemp said when the profile told the defendant he was 15 and shy he replied “we can get that sorted”.

He said: “He asked the decoy if he had any pics and they sent him one of a boy who is now an adult.

“The defendant sent a picture of himself wearing a baseball cap and then a photo of his private parts.

“On his profile the defendant said he was ‘looking for younger bottoms’ and listed the types of sex he was into.

“The defendant then asked the decoy of he ‘wanted to play’.”

Mr Kemp said Collins arranged to meet Rob at Derby railway station in early February.

But as he was waiting he was approached by two women from the group who asked him who he was waiting for.

He said he was waiting for someone called Sharon, but then fled the scene.

Mr Kemp said Collins, of Laburnum Grove, Spring Gardens, Shrewsbury, then handed himself in at St Mary’s Wharf police station.

He said: “He told the police he had been told two women had turned up at his address referring to him as a paedophile and that when he was confronted in Derby he had ran away.”

Collins pleaded guilty to attempting to sexually communicate with a child and attempting to meet a child for sex.

As part of the suspended sentence, Collins was ordered to carry out 35 rehabilitation sessions with the probation service and attend a 90-day program to address his offending.

He was also handed a sexual harm prevention order for 10 years and will be on the sex offender register, also for 10 years.

Judge Bennett also ordered Collins to carry out 80 hours unpaid work

Sunderland sex offender moved in with new partner and her child without revealing his sordid past

A pervert failed to disclose his convictions for sexually assaulting a child and looking at indecent images when he moved in with a mum and her three-year-old.

Callum MacGregor was made subject to tight restrictions as a result of convictions in 2015 for, which he was jailed.

The 24-year-old has to keep the authorities informed about where he is living but when officers turned up to check on him last July, he had abandoned his home in Sunderland

An investigation revealed he had moved to Telford, in Shropshire, with a woman he met online and who had a small child.

Newcastle Crown Court heard MacGregor had told the police in that area that he was living there but was registered as having no fixed address.

Prosecutor Lewis Kerr told the court: “From a point in April he seems to have been living with a female, an adult with whom he was beginning a relationship.

“He explained he had gone to move with her.”

MacGregor told police he had felt “unable to move in if he disclosed his previous convictions”.

Mr Kerr added: “Living in the house with this adult female and the defendant was the adult female’s three-year-old child.”

Mr Kerr said there was no suggestion that the presence of the child was a motive for MacGregor moving in with the woman.

MacGregor, of Claremont Terrace, Sunderland, admitted breach of sexual harm prevention order and notification requirements.

Recorder David Gordon sentenced MacGregor to eight months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, with rehabilitation requirements, 100 hours unpaid work and a four month curfew.

The judge told him: “Officers called to your address expecting to find you there, in order to carry out a home risk assessment and on arrival officers discovered you had not in fact been seen at that address for some considerable time.

“Having been provided with that information, they made a number of inquiries and made telephone contact with you.

“You advised the police in fact you had moved to the Telford area in April 2020.”

The judge added: “This woman was ignorant of your convictions, albeit later you told her about it.”

Oswestry man gets community order over child sex images

An Oswestry man who downloaded more than a thousand indecent images of children has been given a community order in court

Daniel Dey, 42, of of Beatrice Street, was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court after admitting three charges of making indecent images between May 2014 and October last year.

Amongst the 1200 vile images found, 155 involved photographs of the most serious kind showing the rape or torture of young children

Dey was given a two-year community order including a requirement to carry out 35 days of rehabilitation activities and a six- month alcohol treatment programme.

Judge Peter Barrie also applied a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, restricting Dey’s internet access, and told him he must sign the sex offenders register.

Shropshire judge warns of risks of naming and shaming of abusers on social media

A Shropshire crown court judge has spoken of the possible risk to public safety from defendants with mental health issues who are ‘named and shamed’ for their crimes on social media.

Resident Judge Peter Barrie’s comments followed the sentencing of a man now being treated for a psychological illness who was identified on the Facebook site Telford Grooming Group.

The defendant Kirt Stevenson, aged 25, took to arming himself with knife and a hammer for “protection” as a result of the posts.

The offences relate to him taking a 15-year-old girl to the Holiday Inn and out to dinner at a Telford pub in 2017 despite a police order preventing him from meeting her.

Stevenson admitted two counts of abducting a child under 16 and was sentenced to a total of eight months in jail suspended for two years.

Judge Barrie told Stevenson: “The substance of the allegations against you were true, nonetheless the way that social media is used in the public shaming of defendants accused of this type of offence is often unhelpful to the public good.

“I suspect those people responsible did not know about your mental health risks and what they may pose to other people and particularly to children.

“I am sure if they had thought about it, the people who posted it would realise their actions were a reckless form of behaviour.”

The judge also told him: “I have heard in court that you regularly have knives with you when going about in public – and sometimes a hammer.

“I want to say to you that sitting here at court I see a lot of cases about knives. If you carry a knife with you, you may feel you have to take it out. If confronted there may be a real risk that you will use it. Anyone carrying a knife risks causing catastrophic injury.”

Mr David Birrell, prosecuting, said Stevenson, of Hayward Avenue, Donnington – who has previous convictions – was made subject to a harbouring notice to keep away from the girl following concerns from her family. But CCTV footage from the hotel and a pub captured them together.

“It is the Crown’s case that the defendant spent time with her in flagrant disregard to the notice,” said Mr Birrell.

“There was also some sexual element to their relationship. He asserted that she threatened or blackmailed him to spend time with her. The Crown rejects that claim entirely.

“The messages between them suggest they had a sexual relationship.”

In addition to the eight-month jail term suspended for two years, Stevenson was made subject to a mental health treatment order.

He also must attend up to 35 rehabilitation activity days to address his thinking skills.

He was given a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim in any way for seven years.

Llanymynech pub landlord given 18-month community order after sexual assault

A Llanymynech pub landlord who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old schoolgirl in his pub has avoided a prison sentence and instead was handed a 18-month community order.

Robert Hedley, 57, was convicted by a jury in October of sexual assault after the incident, which happened in June of 2018 at the Bradford Arms, in North Road, Llanymynech.

Shrewsbury Crown Court had heard that Hedley forced himself on the child and kissed the girl, who was under the age of 16, without her consent.

The pervert groomed the girl, sexually touched and molested her and repeatedly made sexual innuendos and sexual remarks

He was sentenced last week, where he was given a community order to last 18 months

He will have to complete the Maps for Change programme for sex offenders, as well as 25 days of rehabilitation activity.

Hedley was also ordered to pay the £3,000 costs of the prosecution as well as a victim surcharge.
