Pervert spared jail despite being caught with indecent images of children twice

A Wishaw man who was twice caught with child abuse images has been spared a prison sentence.

Stephen McGowan, 52, will instead be under social work supervision for three years.

He has been placed on the sex offenders’ register for the same period.

McGowan appeared for sentence at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday, after admitting two charges of downloading indecent images.

Mairi-Clare McMillan, prosecuting, said police officers armed with a search warrant seized a mobile phone from his home in Priory Terrace, Netherton, on October 16, 2019.

It contained 138 images, including 19 in the most serious category.

Ms McMillan told the court: “The accused was unwell due to a pre-existing condition. He was taken to hospital and arrested the next day after being released.

“During an interview he admitted looking at images, saying his dad had died and he was struggling.”

McGowan was given bail on condition that he allowed his internet devices to be inspected by police at any time.

He handed over a mobile phone in April last year and it was found to contain 67 child abuse images.

The sheriff told McGowan there will be restrictions on his internet use during the three-year supervision period.

Other conditions of the order include a ban on him having contact with anyone aged 17 or under without the prior approval of his supervising officer.

McGowan must also do 200 hours of unpaid community work and will be electronically tagged for four months. That means he’s confined to his home between 7pm and 7am each day.

Pervert leaves family members disgusted after admitting having indecent images of kids

A Wishaw pervert left family members shattered after being caught with child abuse images for a second time.

Stephen McGowan, 52, was placed on the sex offenders’ register after he admitted charges of downloading indecent pictures.

Nicola Elliott, whose sister was engaged to McGowan, said: “I can’t believe what he has done. It’s disgusting.

“He chucked himself under the bus and everyone else has had to pick up the carnage.

“This is someone who I’ve had in my home and who I’ve shared memories with over the years. I loved him like he was my own brother.

“There has been lots of rumours flying about in this area and I’m glad the truth is out in the open.

“When I first heard about this I asked him why and he could only say “I’m sorry, I f****d up’.”

At Hamilton Sheriff Court on March 26, Mairi-Clare McMillan, prosecuting, said police officers armed with a search warrant seized a mobile phone from McGowan’s now former home in Priory Terrace on October 16, 2019.

It contained 138 images, including 19 in the most serious category.

Ms McMillan told the court: “The accused was unwell due to a pre-existing condition.

“He was taken to hospital and arrested the next day after being released.

“During an interview he admitted looking at images, saying his dad had died and he was struggling.”

McGowan was given bail on condition that he allowed his internet devices to be inspected by police at any time.

He handed over a mobile phone in April last year and it was found to contain 67 child abuse images.

“We had no idea where he was, but when I heard of the second offence I thought how stupid can you be?” Nicola added.

“We had heard he had told people it was all just a misunderstanding and it was just one image.

“But that is just a lie. It just shows you can never tell about a person.

“He has put everyone through hell because of this.”

Another source close to McGowan, who asked not to be named, added: “He talked about struggling since his dad died.

“Suffering a bereavement doesn’t make you do this kind of thing.

“It’s been a horrible time and hopefully once the sentencing is done we can move on.”

Sheriff Colin Dunipace called for a criminal justice social work report and a risk assessment.

Sentence on McGowan was deferred until May.

Lanarkshire pervert admits sharing thousands of child abuse images

A man caught with thousands of child abuse images had been sharing the disgusting material with another paedophile.

Allan Mooney was arrested after an early morning police raid on his home in McNeil Street, Larkhall.

As well as finding images on a phone and a computer, officers discovered more than 2000 messages between Mooney and others who shared his perverted interest.

Mooney, 37, now of Bridgeton, Glasgow, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted possession and sharing of indecent images.

Jennifer McCabe, prosecuting, said police conducted a “systematic” search of the house around 7am on March 27 last year.

On the computer and phone they found 8815 images. Although most were described as Category C, 316 were in Category A, assessed as being the most depraved type

Ms McCabe told the court: “The images featured both male and female children, thought to be aged between four and 14 years.

“Cybercrime officers also recovered 2113 messages representing 30 conversations between the accused and others.

“These were sexually explicit with a clear focus on child abuse and the sharing of images.

“On the accused’s iPhone it could be seen that the accused had sent eight Category C images to another user on one day.

“These were accompanied by messages such as ‘Mmm, she’s lovely’ and ‘Wow, that’s sexy’.”

Sheriff Ray Small called for a criminal justice social work report and a risk assessment.

Sentence on Mooney, who has no previous convictions, was deferred until May and he was put on the sex offenders’ register.

April 2021: Sentenced to 32 months and placed on the sex offenders’ register for an indefinite period.

March 2021

Facebook pervert offered schoolgirls money for topless pictures

A perverted creep admitted offering schoolgirls money in exchange for topless photos during a paedophile hunter sting.

Kieran Ali, 26, struck up conversations with five girls on Facebook.

He bombarded them with depraved messages and repeatedly asked to be sent explicit photos of them despite, being told they were as young as 12.

But Ali, of Hamilton, was unaware he was talking to adult members of a paedophile hunter group pretending to be youngsters to weed out online predators.

Paedo hunters tracked down Ali to a restaurant he worked in and live streamed the confrontation over Facebook.

He was arrested and bailed but later made contact again with paedophile hunters before more vigilantes turned up at his family home.

During a police interview, Ali denied sending the messages and claimed a work colleague had stolen his phone and sent them.

But he later confessed: “I should have stopped it. I have not actually slept with a 14-year-old girl.”

Ali appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted sending sexual messages and images to people pretending to be children between May and December 2019.

Depute fiscal Jennifer McCabe said: “The witnesses in this case are volunteers in a paedophile hunter group who pose as children to track down suspected paedophiles.

“Witnesses identified him before approaching him and this was live streamed on Facebook.

“During an interview with police, he told them he used the name Kieran Taylor on social media and thought that 25-year-olds speaking to 14-year-olds was disgusting and that it was wrong.

“He said he couldn’t remember sending the messages but admitted the messages had been sent from his Facebook Messenger account.

“He then said his colleague could have sent them because he was getting bullied at work, he had reported his phone missing but it had turned up the next day.”

Sheriff Daniel Kelly QC deferred sentence on first offender Ali until next month and remanded him in custody.

He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register.

Stephen Henderson – Holytown

April 2021

Former Bellshill and Mossend YMCA manager is jailed for sex offences

A former YMCA manager has been jailed for 18 months for sex offences involving vulnerable teenage girls he was supposed to be helping.

Stephen Henderson, 32, was told he had betrayed the trust placed in him with his “appalling” behaviour.

Henderson, of Main Street, Holytown, was manager of Bellshill and Mossend YMCA when he groomed the girls who had turned to the charity for support.

He was convicted of communicating indecently with two girls aged under 16 and meeting one of them with the intention of engaging in unlawful sexual activity.

A jury at Hamilton Sheriff Court heard the offences happened between August 2013 and December 2017.

One of the girls was 13 when Henderson first targeted her and the other was 15.

One of the girls said Henderson asked her ‘What would happen if I asked you to kiss me? What would you do if I asked to have sex with you?’

She claimed the comments were made after he gave her a lift home following evening activity at the YMCA.

Defence agent Ian Scott said he hoped there were enough positive factors in background reports to persuade the court that Henderson is “not a danger to the public”.

He suggested his client could be spared a prison sentence.

But Sheriff Colin Dunipace said only jail was appropriate.

He told Henderson: “You were employed by a charity designed to offer young people space in which they can feel secure and respected, and an environment where they can be supported.

“This organisation often deals with vulnerable young people who have experienced difficult times and are desperate for support, encouragement and guidance in addressing their issues. These girls gave clear accounts of their background difficulties and explained how they sought assistance from the YMCA.

“They were extremely vulnerable, but you abused their trust. Their evidence was harrowing. Your behaviour clearly had an impact on their lives and it is to their credit that they have taken steps to move on.

“There was a pattern of grooming when they should have been able to believe that you would look after their interests. That makes the crimes all the more appalling.”

Sheriff Dunipace said he was also concerned at the “possible reputational consequences” for the YMCA of Henderson’s conduct.

He acknowledged Henderson was a first offender and had assisted others during his career.

However, his conduct had been “calculating and protracted” and a prison sentence was necessary.

Henderson will be under supervision for 18 months on his release. He will be on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.

The court heard that he attended the YMCA as a 14-year-old and went on to become a volunteer worker. He secured paid employment and rose to become manager.

Henderson said the organisation was an important influence on him in his teenage years. He told the court: “I had been through a tough time and could have taken a different path had it not been for the help of youth workers.”

Henderson said one-to-one contact with vulnerable teenagers was important as it allowed them to “open up” about their problems. Issues discussed included bullying, drugs and alcohol, sexual health and self-harming.

Henderson was suspended from his post in 2019 when allegations against him were made.

The YMCA carried out an investigation and police were alerted.

March 2021

Lanarkshire YMCA worker preyed on vulnerable teens

A Lanarkshire youth worker who preyed on two vulnerable teenage girls, sent a topless picture and asked them about their sex life while he worked for the YMCA is facing jail.

Stephen Henderson, 31, targeted the girls aged 14 and 15 while employed as a senior staff member at the charity’s Bellshill and Mossend branch which cares for troubled youngsters.

He repeatedly contacted them via Snapchat and told them explicit details about his sex life after meeting them when they attended the group.

A trial heard Henderson groomed the 15-year-old and sent her a topless photo while he would also reveal intimate details about his private life to her.

The woman, now 20, said he repeatedly asked her questions about her sex life.

The second victim, also now 20, said when she was 14 he asked her ‘what would happen if I kissed you? What would happen if I asked you to have sex with me?’ while they were sitting in his car.

Henderson, of Holytown, Lanarkshire, denied any wrongdoing and went on trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court but sobbed as he was convicted by a jury.

He was found guilty of a charge of indecently communicating with the 15-year-old girl and a further charge of meeting her intending to engage in sexual activity between September 2015 and March 2017.

Henderson was also convicted of communicating indecently with the second girl between August 2013 and December 2017.

The first victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, told the court: “He would come and pick me up from school and then we would go for a drive and then he would talk about stuff in his life.

“He used to tell me about sex with his wife and how she wouldn’t do it the way he liked and asked me how I would do it.

“I looked up to Stephen and would never have discussed anything like that with him and when he was talking about it, I did put my guard up a bit.”

The second victim said: “If I had been out and slept with someone and he knew about it, he would ask questions about what I had done, what had happened, what I’d been asked to do and it was dead awkward and uncomfortable.

“I could have been 14 or 15 at the time he was asking this.

“We also spoke about a place near me where teenagers go to drink and he would ask if people also went there to have sex.

“I didn’t want anything with him, not a relationship or anything. I trusted him and went to him for support.”

Henderson, who was suspended by the YMCA after allegations came to light, gave evidence and branded both women liars.

He added: “These messages I sent were not sexual. They are only being interpreted as that way in this court but the wider context would show that.

“They are not telling the truth, I took the oath and I take that very seriously so I’m 100 percent telling the truth.

“I wasn’t interested in them and was only acting in a caring and supportive manner to try and help these girls out.”

Depute fiscal Neil Thomson urged jurors to convict Henderson.

He said: “These girls were both vulnerable and were both receiving support from Stephen Henderson but while in his car they both attribute sexual remarks to him and there are clear similarities to what they both came here to tell you.

“You may just think that Mr Henderson has come up with a string of excuses to get himself out of a very difficult situation.”

Sheriff Colin Dunipace deferred sentence on first offender Henderson until next month for reports, continued his bail and placed him on the sex offenders register.

He added: “I take on board everything that was said during the trial, your previous good character and also the fact that you undertook a lot of good work with the YMCA.

“But you have now been found guilty of taking advantage of these young vulnerable females and you should be under no illusions that the court will take an extremely serious view on these matters.”

Glasgow paedophile hunting group sting perv at Buchanan bus station

A pervert believed he was chatting to a 14-year-old girl when he asked her to stay at his flat and wear a school uniform.

Matthew Stone was instead talking to a paedo hunting group posing as the teenager from Glasgow between August and September 2019.

The 42-year-old also gave instructions on how the girl could perform a sex act on herself during the chats.

Stone pleaded guilty on Monday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to sending written sexual communication to an adult pretending to be a child.

He also admitted intentionally attempt to have a child participate in sexual activity and intending to meet a child to engage in unlawful sexual behaviour.

The court heard Stone, of Motherwell, contacted the “decoy” randomly on Facebook.

The individual told Stone her age and asked if it was okay to be speaking to him.

Stone replied: “As long as it’s okay with you.”

He went on to send a total of 534 messages to the decoy through text messages and WhatsApp

Prosecutor John Bedford said: “During the contact, Stone said he wanted to see and for her to come to his house.

“He offered her to stay at his flat and that he would buy her a new phone.

“He said he would let her have some wine and not to tell her mum as he did not want her getting drunk and sick.

“He asked her to bring her school uniform without her mum knowing and that she was to say she is 17 when in his company.”

Stone was snared by the group at Glasgow’s Buchanan Bus Station where he was later arrested by police.

Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports by Sheriff Joan Kerr.

Stone was put on the sex offenders register indefinitely and granted bail meantime.
