Champion archer caught with child abuse images set up jacuzzi spy cam at Fife home

A leading Scottish archer is facing jail after setting up a camera to spy on young women in their swimwear.

Karl Paddon, 58, who is listed as having clinched Scottish records for American and American Double archery target-shooting in July 2013, installed the equipment, normally used to monitor his dogs, at his seafront bungalow.

A court heard that he knew the young women, aged 25 and 26, would be using his jacuzzi when he was out.

Images of them in swimming costumes and “swimming underwear”, recorded in April 2018, was found on his phone when police raided his semi on the Promenade in Leven, Fife, acting on information that his IP address had been used to download child abuse images.

As well as the jacuzzi footage, they found more than 1,000 pornographic pictures of children – 124 of the most serious category – on Paddon’s laptop and iPad.

Giving evidence during a five-day trial, one of the women filmed in her swimwear became “visibly upset” in the witness box when shown one of the images of Paddon had recorded of her.

Prosecutor Michael Maguire said Paddon had deliberately set up the spycam to film the women “for some kind of sick kick”.

At Falkirk Sheriff Court, a remote jury found Paddon, of “Ravenscraig”, The Promenade, Leven, guilty by majority of two charges of voyeurism, and guilty, unanimously, of possessing and downloading child abuse images.

Jury members had earlier been warned by the presiding sheriff to “put aside any revulsion” they might feel for the matters they were being asked to deliberate about.

Paddon denied the charges.

He said in evidence that others had access to his password-protected equipment and he had no idea that there was illegal material on his devices.

However, forensic analysis showed that at one point an archery picture of Paddon’s had been downloaded the same day as some of the child porn — a fact which the Crown said pointed to Paddon having control of the laptop that day.

The court heard the police raid occurred on October 31st, 2019. Some of the images were downloaded as far back as November 2015, not only in Leven but also at a time when Paddon was living at a previous address in Thurso, Caithness, where he originally bought the laptop.

The machine’s search history revealed websites that it had been used to visit had titles including “Lolitas”, “Paedo Porno Exclusives” and “Only Small Baby”.

Paddon bowed his head in the dock when the verdicts were announced. A woman accompanying him wept openly on the public benches.

Sheriff William Gilchrist deferred sentence until July 7th for reports, and continued bail.

He told Paddon: “You must attend for an interview with a social worker.”

Woman sexually abused schoolboy then tried to babysit other children

A Blackpool woman who engaged in sexual activity with a young boy has been brought back to court after befriending families with children.

Jade Henderson was convicted of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a boy who was aged 11 in April 2015.

Henderson was given a five-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to the offence and was also given a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

She avoided a prison sentence after the boy’s father, in a victim personal statement, said his son had “been a willing party”.

At Preston Crown Court, 27-year-old Henderson appeared to be sentenced for five “flagrant” breaches of the SHPO involving three different young boys.

Henderson, who has “significant learning difficulties”, and her boyfriend had met a family in a pub in Blackpool in January 2018.

Prosecutor Amanda Johnson told the court that the family had four young children.

“The defendant liked playing with the children and their mother thought nothing of it,” she said.

“They became good friends and the defendant and her partner would visit the family three or four times a week.

“The defendant offered to babysit on a number of occasions but the mother refused because she already had a babysitter.

“The defendant also asked if the children could stay over at her home.

“On one occasion the defendant took the children to a shop but she didn’t bring them back immediately which caused the mother to be worried.

“She rang up and the defendant said she was in a KFC with the children and apologised.”

The court heard that the mother was then sent a newspaper clipping dating back to when Henderson was convicted of sexual activity with a child.

“On May 29 in 2018 a man and his wife were on holiday at a campsite in North Wales and the defendant and Mr Wood were at the same campsite,” Miss Johnson said.

“The defendant went into a caravan with her partner and she was talking to some children. She took photos of them on her mobile phone.

“The defendant recounted a tale about how she had two children who had died in a car crash but when she told the family her age they realised something didn’t add up and became suspicious.

“The man’s wife looked on Google and found out about her past.”

One of the boys later said Henderson had taken photos of him and told him that she loved him.

Henderson later failed to comply with the notification requirements of her conviction from 2015 by not informing police when she moved into the New Milton Hotel in Blackpool where she worked as a live-in manager with Mr Wood.

The judge, Recorder Ian Harris, told Henderson there was “no alternative” sentence but immediate imprisonment.

“Your previous convictions for sexual activity with a male child you were cautioned which I view as a warning.

“In June 2016 you were sentenced for failing to comply with the supervision order.

“I regret to inform you that I don’t find any alternative sentence other than immediate imprisonment. You have had warnings in the past and these are offences against children and against justice.

“These children were very young, you befriended them and you didn’t disclose your background. You hoped the parents wouldn’t find out.

“No harm came to the children but I find this behaviour troubling.

“You avoided immediate imprisonment in 2016, you breached the supervision aspect, you have breached the order and ignored court orders and in my judgement the only sentence is one of immediate imprisonment.

“You do pose a risk to children.”

Henderson was jailed for a total of 15 months.

‘Keep your sons close’ Pervert who had sex with boy aged 11 moves to Scotland

A worried mum has issued a warning after a woman who had sex with an 11-year-old boy moved to Scotland.

Jade Henderson, formerly of Blackpool, was handed a suspended prison term in 2016 and placed on the sex offenders’ register for seven years after admitting the crime.

The judge also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to run for five years, which was meant to stop her from having contact with boys.

Henderson, 27, has since moved to an address in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, to start a new life.

But last week she was locked up after breaching the order while at a campsite in north Wales in May 2018.

Now a mum of three young boys who came into contact with Henderson at the site has warned Scottish families to be aware of her.

The woman, who doesn’t want to be named, said she was with her sons when they met Henderson and her partner, who was known to the family.

She added: “We knew him as I used to work with his ex-wife.

“I hadn’t seen him for a long time before then. We went to our friend’s caravan and he was there and introduced Henderson to us as his fiancee.

“Then she showed me a picture of a beautiful little boy and girl and said they were her children.

“She said they were killed in a car crash. I asked how old they were and she told me they were nine and seven and it was in 2006, and I sat there thinking, ‘Something’s not right’.

“I was googling for a car crash when a picture of her came up and the story about the 11-year-old boy.

“I told my husband and he went to the other caravan to see [Henderson’s partner] but he said he didn’t know anything about it. They upped and left in the morning.

“We just want people to be aware in case she’s befriending more families.”

The mum contacted cops after discovering Henderson was on the sex offenders’ register.

Police visited the family and took statements from her husband and their youngest son.

“She took pictures of my son, who was only six at the time, and we didn’t think anything of it,” the mum added. “It was only later that we discovered that she told him that she loved him.”

Henderson also failed to comply with the SHPO when she failed to tell police she’d moved into a Blackpool hotel where she worked as a live-in manager.

It was in the seaside town she met another family with four kids in January 2018. Preston Crown Court heard she visited them and offered to babysit.

The family then received a newspaper clipping detailing Henderson’s original offence.

The judge said he could find no alternative to imprisonment, adding that Henderson posed a risk to children. She was sentenced to 15 months for five breaches of the order.

East Kilbride pervert snared by paedophile hunters is sentenced

An East Kilbride creep who was snared by paedophile hunters has been put on the sex offenders’ register for three years.

Michael Docherty was tricked into believing he was having online chats about sex with a 13-year-old boy.

He talked about taking the “boy” to a hotel and performing sexual acts with him.

He was unaware that he had been set up by Phoenix Guardians of the Innocents.

The group tipped off another organisation, Maximum Exposure, and vigilantes confronted Docherty at his home in Burnbrae Crescent before alerting the police.

Docherty, 29, was given a three-year supervision order as an alternative to prison at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted indecent communication with a person he thought was a child between May 17 and June 30 last year.

Docherty also admitted sending the person an indecent photograph.

Jennifer Cunningham, prosecuting, said a paedo hunting group set up a fake online profile in the name of a boy called Ben, purporting to be from Blackpool.

‘Ben’ was contacted by Docherty on the ‘Meet Me’ dating website and they began to have regular online chats.

Despite being told repeatedly that “Ben” was only 13 and “way younger” than him, Docherty insisted that wasn’t a problem and told the “boy” to trust him.

Soon, there was a sexual element to their chats and Docherty talked about travelling to meet “Ben” in a hotel.

He stated: “Maybe you should be here with me, keeping me warm and hugging me. I love hugging guys – anything can happen.”

Docherty’s chat became increasingly graphic.

He spoke about “entertaining” the boy and having sex with him. He also sent him an image of a penis, saying it was his.

Vigilantes confronted Docherty on June 30 and livestreamed it on Facebook.

Later police armed with a search warrant went to the address and were met by Docherty’s male partner.

Internet devices were seized and Docherty’s WhatsApp chats with “Ben” were recovered.

Docherty has no previous convictions and solicitor Tom Watters said his client has undertaken “intensive voluntary therapy” since the offences came to light.

Mr Watters told Sheriff Ray Small that Docherty had accepted responsibility for his actions at an early stage and taken all possible steps to address his issues.

Man claims he downloaded over 1000 indecent images of kids for ‘research’

A man caught with child abuse photographs on his laptop claimed he was not a paedophile and was only doing research.

Douglas Suttie told police officers an ex-partner had been a victim of abuse and he wanted “a better understanding of what she had been through”.

Suttie, 49, was placed on the sex offenders’ register when he appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted downloading more than 1200 child abuse images at his home in Tollhouse Gardens, Bellshill, between May 2018 and March last year.

Jennifer McCabe, prosecuting, said that while most of the photos were in the least serious category, 34 were rated category A, the most depraved.

She said Suttie’s laptop was seized when police officers arrived at his home with a search warrant on March 24 last year

It was clear from the laptop’s search history that he had been scouring websites for material.

Images that he had deleted were found after specialist officers carried out a forensic examination of the device.

Ms McCabe told the court: “During a police interview the accused admitted being on websites he shouldn’t have visited and had seen some ‘very sickening’ images of children being abused.

“He said this was not for sexual gratification but for research.

“One of his ex-partners had been subjected to abuse as a child and he wanted to better understand what she had been through. She had not really opened up to him.

“The accused also said that he had hoped to find pictures of the person who had abused his ex.”

Sheriff Daniel Kelly called for a criminal justice social work report and a risk assessment.

Sentence on Suttie was deferred until next month and his bail was continued.

James Lappin – Airdrie

Children’s worker struck off from Lanarkshire school after physically and verbally abusing boy

A children’s worker at an Airdrie school left a young boy terrified after physically and verbally abusing him.

James Lappin was employed at St Philip’s independent school, which provides education for vulnerable youngsters from across the country.

He left a boy, known only as AA, terrified after subjecting him to physical and verbal abuse in a classroom.

Lappin has now been struck off.

Lappin put his hand over the boy’s mouth and nose and threatened to call the police before telling him, ‘you wee b*****d’.

He was asked to leave the room by horrified colleagues, but returned and continued to shout and swear at the youngster during the incident last March.

The experienced residential child care worker was reported to bosses and was hauled before a hearing of the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).

A panel ruled Lappin posed a high risk of repeating his behaviour and had no option but to ban him from the profession.

He took legal advice during the hearing and later admitted the facts of the case, before accepting the decision.

In a written ruling, the SSSC said: “Placing your hand over the young person’s nose and mouth, shouting at him and calling him a ‘wee b*****d’, and threatening to report him to the police was both physically and verbally abusive behaviour.

“The young person should be able to trust that the adults caring for him will respond appropriately when he is in a crisis situation.

“The young person requires to be calmed and reassured. Instead, you shouted, swore, threatened him and placed your hand over his nose and mouth.

“This behaviour involved a loss of self-control and a display of aggressive behaviour.

“This behaviour caused, or was likely to cause, physical and emotional harm and an escalation of the situation which could have led to a greater risk of harm to the young person.

“This was an isolated incidence however, when asked by colleagues to leave the room, you returned a few minutes later and continued to shout and swear at the young person. There has been no remediation.

“Given the lack of any insight, regret or remorse the SSSC has concluded that the risk of similar behaviour being repeated is high.”

They added: “The SSSC considers that a removal order is the most appropriate sanction as it is both necessary and justified in the public interest and to maintain the continuing trust and confidence in the social service profession and the SSSC as the regulator of the profession.”
