Outrage as champagne swigging serial sex beast seen walking streets after early release
A serial rapist is back on the streets after being released early from prison.
Champagne-swigging sex beast Zach Rankin, 29, was locked up for nearly 10 years after being convicted of raping three women he wooed with flashy dates.
But just six years after he was jailed he has been spotted out and about in Glasgow ’s west end by previous associates.
A source said: “He is now free, walking the streets of Partick and the West End of Glasgow, where many young women and students live and frequent.
“The public needs to know.”
Rankin charmed his young victims – including a girl aged just 15 – with lavish gestures before subjecting them to vicious sexual ordeals which left them terrified.
He was so confident his secret would never be uncovered he recorded a vile song for YouTube about degrading women which branded them “sl*ts”.
A source once close to Rankin said yesterday: “The fact he’s out has made its way around his previous circles. It has sparked a lot of negative reaction.
“When the police did their investigation they only focused on previous girlfriends of Zach.
“I know of quite a few women who have been affected by him.”
One of his victims told of her ordeal after he was found guilty by a jury of the five rapes and six assaults on his victims.
She told how she planned to flee Glasgow, saying warped Rankin would plot his revenge from his jail cell and try to ruin her life.
The then 24-year-old planned her escape from the relationship just weeks after meeting Rankin, who she described as a “salesman through and through”, and revealed how his designer suits and flashy nights out were just a facade as he lived on handouts from his parents and struggled to keep a roof over his head.
She said “dangerous” Rankin would choke her during sex and first raped the student when she woke up with him assaulting her as he watched porn.
She thought she was free of him when he ended the relationship later in 2013 but he raped her again before she could leave.
She said: “I’ve never been the same since.
“Now if someone looks at me the wrong way it takes me back to that place and I can’t think about anything else. I have flashbacks of hands around my neck.”
His youngest victim said she was 15 when she first started having unlawful sex with Rankin, her first real boyfriend.
But she said their relationship quickly turned into an abusive one and, when she tried to dump him during a camping trip at South Beach, Troon, in Ayrshire in 2010, he raped her in the tent.
A 24-year-old, mixed-race, single mum said he slapped her and spat on her face before raping her on two occasions in flats in Pollokshields, Glasgow, during their relationship.
He was also convicted of racially abusing her.
All of the offences were committed between January 2010 and May 2014.
The women realised there had been overlaps in their relationships with Rankin.
At his trial, Rankin denied all the charges and claimed the females consented to sex.
He said they lied because they had a grudge against him but drew disgusted looks from the jury when he boasted of being “well endowed” and said he was “a connoisseur of porn”.
Rankin was jailed for nine-and-a-half years at the High Court in Edinburgh in June 2015, with judge Lord Bannatyne telling him his attitude towards women was “clearly disordered”.
The judge added: “You pose a significant risk of harm to any woman with whom you are in a relationship.”
Lord Bannatyne ordered his name be added to the sex offenders’ register for an indefinite period.
A Scottish Prison Service spokeswoman confirmed Rankin is no longer in custody.
Twisted pensioner used a camera hidden in a shopping basket to film up children’s skirts and collected 8,000 images
A predatory pensioner from Barrhead hid a camera in a shopping basket to film up the skirts of children before sharing the clips with paedophiles across the world.
Vile Robert Malaney, 76, amassed a horrific haul of more than 8,000 images during a seven-year long campaign of child exploitation
Malaney prowled the now-closed Dobbie’s Garden Centre in Paisley, Glasgow Central Station and other public areas in Barrhead and covertly filmed footage of children.
The creep trailed around after youngsters, secretly recording voyeuristic images of their bottoms, underwear and privates.
Paisley Sheriff Court heard when cops raided his home in Barrhead, after a tip-off from child protection officers, they found more than 8,000 indecent images featuring child sexual exploitation.
Malaney had also been sharing images online with a notorious paedophile website registered in Russia.
Procurator fiscal depute Ed Sheeran told the court cops raided his home on October 2 last year after receiving intelligence he was sharing indecent images online.
He said: “When the warrant was read out to him, he placed his hands on his head.
“During the course of the search, a number of items were seized.
“These included a Lenova laptop, a number of computer hard drives, a USB stick and a blue tub containing eight SD cards.”
The devices were analysed by cyber crime experts, who discovered four Category A, 26 Category B and 8,285 Category C images depicting the sexual exploitation of children.
Also in his vile stash were 14 video files he had recorded himself of young girls.
The prosecutor added: “Covert recordings were discovered on the devices.
“Footage had been taken in various locations such as supermarkets, shopping centres and other public places.
“On August 9, 2016, the film was taken from a shopping basket at a low angle.
“The images show a female child aged between eight and 12 and at four separate points the images capture up the child’s skirt, capturing her underwear.
“In the footage, the camera holder follows the child, making multiple efforts to capture the footage.”
The court heard Malaney targeted another young girl, whose age was not determined, at another supermarket, where he again recorded “up skirt footage of her underwear”.
Mr Sheeran added thousands of images had been edited together, “so that they almost played like a video”.
Another video file featured him secretly recording a girl in Barrhead, where his voice can be heard as the camera points up the child’s skirt, capturing her underwear.
The court heard Malaney had been involved in creating “first generation” images depicting the sexual exploitation of youngsters.
These are images were then hosted in websites abroad including Russia.
The prosecutor added: “A number of websites were related to the images found.
“These websites allow users to upload and download images.
“One is frequently used by users to upload Category C images.”
Mr Sheeran said a particular website involved is the subject of “an international criminal investigation”.
Malaney pleaded guilty to charges of creating indecent images of children on dates between March 2013 and September 2020.
He admitted conducting himself in a disorderly manner by covertly recording indecent images of children at Dobbie’s Garden Centre in Paisley, Glasgow Central Station and various locations in Barrhead by filming up their skirts and keeping the recordings on dates between April 2013 and September 2019.
He also pleaded guilty to operating equipment to film covert footage of a child in Barrhead in August 2016.
His defence agent confirmed Malaney was admitting responsibility for the offences, but asked to reserve his plea in mitigation until after the court receives background reports in preparation for sentencing.
Sheriff Mark Thorley placed first offender Malaney on the Sex Offenders’ Register and released him on bail to call for reports.
He said: “You are now subject to registration procedures, the length of which will be determined at sentencing.”
Prosecutors also called for a Sexual Offence Prevention Order (SOPO) to be placed on Malaney for protection of the public, which will be decided when he appears back at court on August
Robert the Bruce impersonator is a paedophile who had sick images of kids in community hall
A man who shot to fame impersonating Scots king Robert the Bruce during Bannockburn commemorations has admitted sharing sickening images of child abuse.
Brian McCutcheon, 54, was working at a community hall in Blantyre when police were alerted that someone was accessing indecent images online.
Officers raided the hall keeper’s home in Cambuslang, but left empty handed.
But when they attended the hall they discovered four laptops and found one contained photos of youngsters being abused.
CCTV footage from the hall showed McCutcheon using the device at the same time the images had been sent
A total of nine photos were discovered along with five videos showing abuse of the most depraved level.
McCutcheon has appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted distributing indecent images of children at the community hall between January last year and January this year.
Depute fiscal Mairi-Clare McMillan said: “The locus for this offence is the community hall which is the workplace of the accused where he was employed as caretaker.
“In January last year, the Lanarkshire public protection unit were made aware that indecent images of children had been shared from the router in the hall.
“A search of his home revealed nothing but during a search of the hall, four laptops were found in a cupboard.
“Cyber crime officers then attended and carried out an on-site examination and during this one of the laptops appeared to have indecent images of children and there were also incoming and outgoing messages on an app.
“CCTV was observed and showed the accused in possession of the laptop when images were accessed.”
Sheriff Linda Nicolson deferred sentence on McCutcheon until next month for reports and continued bail.
He was added to the sex offenders’ register and the laptop he had been using was seized by prosecutors.
In 2014, McCutcheon made headlines after playing Bruce during the Bannockburn Live event.
He was dressed in full regalia for the event, which commemorated the 700th anniversary of Bruce’s victory over the invading English armies of Edward II just outside Stirling.
He appeared in newspapers across the country and was also interviewed for programmes in France and Germany following the event which was attended by around 20,000 people.
‘High-risk’ Drumchapel sex attacker was on ‘legal high’ before attacking teacher
A high-risk sex attacker who pounced on a school teacher in broad daylight and subjected her to a terrifying assault was jailed for four and a half years today.
John Burns, 28, had been consuming “legal high” drugs before carrying out the attack on his victim whom he intended to rape.
Burns tried to cover her mouth with his hand as she repeatedly shouted “No please don’t” after he pinned her to the ground and warned he had a knife.
He will be on the sex offenders’ register for life.
A judge told Burns: “You set upon your victim in an open location, visible from and surrounded by housing and busy roads.”
Judge Craig Scott QC said at the High Court in Edinburgh that the attack occurred in circumstances where the victim was entitled to have felt safe.
The judge said the attack had had profound effects for the victim and added: “She is continually on her guard. She has been traumatised by a sustained and intimate sexual assault.”
He said he accepted that Burns had significant mental health problems but added: “I was advised the difficulty so far as the attack was concerned arose through your involvement in the use of legal highs.”
He pointed out that a background report prepared on Burns had assessed him as posing a high risk of further sexually aggressive behaviour.
The judge said he would have jailed Burns for five years if he had been convicted of the crime after trial.
He also ordered that Burns be kept under supervision for a further two years and warned that if he breached the conditions of his licence during that period he could be returned to custody.
Burns earlier admitted sexually assaulting the woman with intent to rape her at an area between Invercanny Drive and Cally Avenue, Drumchapel, on May 11, 2015.
The court heard the woman was walking alone towards Drumchapel train station when the attack occurred.
Advocate depute Paul Brown said Burns launched his attack on her from behind and bundled her to the ground before he lay on top of her and pinned the struggling woman down.
At one point in the assault he told her: “Keep quiet. Keep still. I’ve got a knife.” He pushed the woman’s skirt up as she kept saying: “Please don’t.” Burns responded: “Just let me do it then.”
Mr Brown said the victim was terrified and told her attacker: “I need to go to the hospital to see my dad.” The remark stopped Burns in his tracks and he asked her: “Really?”
He abruptly stopped the sex attack and his victim watched him running away unsure whether he would return. She arrived at Drumchapel police station in “an extremely distressed state”.
DNA testing was carried out on clothing from the victim and after a check with a DNA database was carried out a match for unemployed Burns was returned.
A search of Burns home in Drumchapel recovered a pair of glasses which fitted the description of the victim of the spectacles worn by her attacked.
Burns was earlier placed on the sex offenders’ register and he will remain on it indefinitely.
