Man warned about paedophiles online even as he sent lewd messages to ‘girls’

A man sent worrying messages to an online paedophile hunter after being arrested following “stings” involving four so-called decoys, a court heard.

Darren Hughes, 45, of Gilbert Street, Holyhead, was jailed for five years and a month at Caernarfon crown court.

He admitted witness intimidation by contacting a woman on her personal Instagram account.

Hughes also pleaded guilty to attempted sexual communication with a child and trying to incite an underage teenage girl to engage in sexual activity.

Judge Timothy Petts said in August and September he had online chat with whom he thought were 13 or 14-year-old girls. He used WhatsApp extensively.

Judge Petts said his messages were “relentlessly sexual, almost from the start”.

Hughes must register as a sex offender indefinitely and a sexual harm prevention order will last for 15 years.

Prosecuting barrister Owen Edwards said Hughes had been aggressive during his lewd messages and warned about “old paedophiles” who went on dating sites.

Eventually Hughes had been confronted by paedophile hunters at his home and arrested.

But a paedophile hunter received a message from someone claiming to be Hughes’s brother, saying he had killed himself as a result of her actions.

Mr Edwards said it was clear it had been the defendant who claimed to be part of a gang. Hughes said they took violent revenge on “decoys”.

Extra jail time for sex offender who failed to tell police about relationship

An inmate at HMP Berwyn has been handed extra jail time after he admitted breaching his requirements under sexual offences legislation.

Jaime Bailey appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court on Thursday via video link from the prison.

The 30-year-old, from Anglesey, had admitted two counts of failing to comply with notification requirements under the sexual offences act 2003.

Philip Clemo, prosecuting, told the court Bailey had been convicted in 2016 for engaging in a sex act with a female child, for which he received a five year custodial sentence.

As part of his sentence, his requirements included that he tell police if he stayed at an address where a child lived.

Mr Clemo said while on license in 2019, he struck up a relationship with the mum of a young child.

On two occasions that year, he stayed at her home when the child was there.

The family was aware he’d been in prison but they didn’t know the true nature of his offence, the court heard.

When visited by police in February 2020, he told them about the relationship.

Officers checked his file and discovered that he’d failed to notify the police about the developments.

He was recalled to prison in March last year and has remained there since.

Henry Hills, defending, said his client failed “to recognise the importance and necessity of adhering to the demands of his notification requirements.”

Mr Hills invited the court to suspend any custodial sentence, adding he would have been released from his five year jail term for the sexual offence in February 2020.

Judge Rhys Rowlands told Bailey: “You’d have plainly been aware that what you were doing placed you in breach of the requirements.”

The Judge handed Bailey a 30 week custodial sentence, to be served immediately

Jailed for grooming teenager

A 25-year-old Anglesey man has been jailed for five years after a jury found him guilty of a charge of sexual activity with an under-age teenage girl.

“From the outset you knew her age and you also knew she was developing a crush on you,” Jamie Bailey of Fron, Trevor, Holyhead, was told by a judge at Caernarfon crown court.

Judge Philip Harris-Jenkins said there had been grooming and texting. He accepted that the defendant had a certain lack of maturity

A Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed.

Update: To be released on licence in April, 2021

Convicted Anglesey rapist cleared of further sex offences

A judge has decided that there was not enough evidence to further convict a child rapist of further serious sexual offences.

Bruno Rae, aged 52, formerly of Warrington and who later lived on Anglesey, is currently serving a 16 year prison sentence after he was convicted of raping a young girl

A jury at Mold Crown Court heard allegations of rape, attempted rape and four other sexual offences against a young boy

Judge Niclas Parry said after the verdict that he would now simply continue to serve the current prison sentence.

The jury of seven men and five women were told that the defendant had been convicted of child rape and in March 2013 he received a 16 year prison sentence at Chester Crown Court.

The court was told that the female victim was seven when the abuse began, and it continued for a further seven years, finally ending when she was 14.

During that trial, Judge Dutton described him as an evil, controlling and manipulative individual who showed no remorse for his crimes.

While he was in custody, the complainant in the current proceedings came forward in 2015 and made fresh allegations against him.

It was alleged that the defendant had sexually assaulted the complainant and had raped him and had tried to do so.

He felt frightened and intimidated, he said.

Prosecuting barrister Matthew Curtis alleged that when the defendant heard about the new allegations he tried to commit suicide.

He had, he alleged, been “found out” and tried to hang himself and take an overdose.

Rae denied any sexual behaviour towards the boy who was aged between 11 and 13

The defendant told the jury that he had been wrongly convicted originally and had appealed against the conviction.

He said that the appeal had gone against him and that was why he had tried to harm himself.

Flasher waved his penis at traffic from bridge and waited in dark for female joggers

A serial flasher waved his penis at passing traffic and waited in the dark for women to pass by in a “campaign of depraved behaviour”.

Dale Keiron Topping, 26, from Anglesey in north Wales, exposed himself three times over two months at the end of 2019 and at the beginning of 2020.

In the first incident, he parked his car on a lay-by on the A5 in Anglesey on November, 6, 2019 and waited in the dark for a female jogger

When one eventually ran past, Topping was stood there “with his penis out, his hands on his hips and smiling at her”

He then slapped her bottom as she tried to run past.

On December 22, 2019, Topping exposed himself again on a footbridge over the A55 near the village of Llanfairpwll – with witnesses including a family in a car.

The judge said: “Your hand was in the air and you were waving your penis at the traffic.”

On January 8 last year, he spotted two women joggers in Gwynedd.

As they approached him, Topping pulled his trousers down and exposed himself.

He was caught after the women got into their car, drove past him and took a photo of him.

Topping denied exposing himself three times and denied committing sexual assault.

However, he was convicted after a trial.

Prosecutor Simon Mintz said Topping’s first victim now carries a personal attack alarm and her husband worries about her welfare when she’s out running.

Another jogger said she avoids the area where Topping exposed himself.

A third victim, who saw him expose himself on the footbridge from a car, feels “nervous, anxious and vulnerable”.

He lost his job as a mechanic when the allegations were first made.

But the judge, his Honour Judge Rhys Rowlands, said his crimes would have been “terrifying” and were committed for his own sexual gratification.

He told Topping the offences were “fast turning into a campaign of depraved behaviour”.

The judge added: “I see no evidence of remorse or indeed of understanding of how wrong your behaviour was.”

Judge Rowlands jailed Topping for eight months for exposure and ten months for sexual assault, to run concurrently.

He was given a three-year restraining order and must register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Topping will also be placed on the barring list preventing him from working with children and vulnerable adults on his release.

March 2021

Paedophile teacher and ex-policeman sent sexual messages to ’12-year-old girl’

A school teacher and ex-cop was caught sending sexual messages to someone he thought was a 12-year-old girl, a court heard.

Barry Lander, 48, began to message a young girl named on a chat room when in fact it was an undercover police officer.

On Friday Caernarfon Crown Court heard how the teacher and former police officer sent sexual messages to the girl’s account over a two-week period in October 2019, culminating in suggestions of the pair meeting up in Cardiff.

Despite being told the girl’s age messages read in court heard how Lander had referred to kissing her neck and touching her nipples as he moved his hands “down”.

During an earlier trial Lander, from Anglesey, denied his behaviour, claiming that he knew all along that the account was a “vigilante” and that he was “stringing” the account along.

But he was convicted of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity by a jury.

In Friday’s hearing Simon Mintz, prosecuting, said the messages culminated in an exchange on October 22 in which the conversation turned to “what would happen if they met up in Cardiff.”

Asking what the girl would do in response to him touching her, the undercover police officer replied: “Just lie there lol.” Lander replied: “I hoped you would say you would open your legs lol.”

In the hearing it was also heard that when the police officer stopped replying to Lander the teacher continued to send messages.

It was said that Lander had potential work plans to visit Cardiff in November 2019 although a meeting with the girl had not been arranged.

In his sentencing remarks Judge David Hale said Lander had joined a chat room while “perhaps at his lowest ebb” and began to chat with the account.

From there Lander had suggested the conversation move onto Skype “which of course the police officer was happy to do”.

Judge Hale said: “You are fixated by your contention that you realised straightaway that this was a vigilante and no doubt you have gone through the transcript time and time again not only before the trial but since finding different pieces of syntax to support your conspiracy.

“What you overlook, perhaps, is the ease with which you used phrases to steer the conversation towards a sexual matter. They are your phrases throughout.”

He added: “I don’t believe for a minute you thought this was a vigilante. You didn’t think about anything about this conversation with a young girl culminating in the possibility of going to meet in Cardiff where you knew you had to go as part of your employment in the November.”

In total Lander, of Bron y Graig, Bodedern, was sentenced to two years in prison, half of which will be served in custody before he is released on licence.

A sexual harm prevention order will also be put in place, lasting for 10 years, and Lander will be placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years barring him from working with children.

Anglesey maths teacher and ex-cop found guilty of trying to groom 12-year-old girl online after undercover police sting

A married maths teacher and former policeman accused of trying to groom a girl of twelve online was caught in a “sting” by an undercover cop.

Barry Lander, aged 48, of Bron y Graig, Bodedern, Anglesey, was convicted on a 10-2 majority verdict, by a Caernarfon crown court jury, of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity during October 2019.

He had denied the charge during a two-day trial.

He’d claimed he knew from an early stage it wasn’t a child chatting online and thought it may have been a vigilante paedophile hunter who he was “stringing” along.

But prosecutor Simon Rogers alleged he was getting a “thrill” from sexually explicit chat with someone he thought was a girl.

Quizzed about his choice of profile name “bad hub,” Lander insisted :”It was just a name I made up. There was no specific reason. It’s a hub of people. I just put the word ‘bad’ in front of it.”

Mr Rogers asked whether Lander had mentioned “Candy Crush” because a young girl would be interested in such a game.

“You asked ‘is it just you and your foster mum’? Was that you working out the family dynamic?” Mr Rogers also said to him. Lander replied: ”No.”

Lander told the jury he sent a real photograph of himself “in error” to someone he thought was an adult and web paedophile hunter.

The prosecution alleged there were “clear elements of grooming” and Lander had started to sexualise the chat and had been “pushing the boundaries.”

During the web messages Lander had commented “you deserve someone nice” and “you are awesome.” But in court he disputed that he was trying to “curry favour.”

In one conversation, he’d also asked :”How bad are you really?”

Lander maintained he was “stringing them along, trying to get some reaction. I was trying to help the police service by stringing this person along, by keeping these people occupied.”

Lander had discussed him staying at a Cardiff hotel and his lustful desires including about teaching his web contact “a lesson.”

He told his barrister Anna Price that although he had been told the other web user was twelve, he believed it had been someone in their 30s or 40s because of their literacy skills including the use of the word “actually” and apostrophes.

He said he wanted to waste the time of the “vigilante.”

Judge David Hale bailed Lander, whose wife was in court, until he is sentenced next month after a pre-sentence report. He must register as a sex offender.

“Don’t read anything into the fact I am asking for a report,” the judge warned him.
