The ‘depraved’ paedophile who got young girls drunk before sexually abusing them – and the woman who joined in

A “depraved” paedophile and rapist who abused five different girls has been handed a 14-year prison sentence.

Martin Finch, from Broom Road, Wigan, plied his victims with alcohol to get them drunk before he sexually abused them.

At Bolton Crown Court yesterday (Thursday) the 44-year-old was found guilty two counts of rape, seven counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual assault by penetration.

Five of these counts were assaults on children under 14 years of age.

He was on the stand alongside Kathryn Wilkinson, of the same address, who was handed a five-year prison sentence after being guilty of one count of sexual assault and one of sexual assault by penetration.

On one occasion, Finch raped one of his victims before 42-year-old Wilkinson appeared and exposed herself to the girl before sexually assaulting her.

“The severity of this case should not be underestimated. Finch is not only a rapist, but also a paedophile,” said Detective Constable, Alastair Macmillan, of GMP’s Wigan division.

“He was cunning and calculated in the way he intoxicated his victims before preying on them, with Wilkinson also joining him in this depraved behaviour.

“I want to thank the victim’s for coming forward and speaking out. I can only imagine how difficult this investigation must have been for them; however their bravery and assistance has helped us to ensure that Finch and Wilkinson face justice for their horrendous actions.

“The abuse that these victims have faced at the hands of this despicable duo has not only left them feeling violated and frightened, but will affect them for the rest of their lives.

Brandon woman, 36, admits taking and distributing indecent child photographs

A woman sent naked pictures of a child to a man she met online and discussed involving the child in a sexual act

Magistrates heard how Claire Kelly, 36, of Yew Drive, Brandon, was taken to hospital on August 21, 2019, following a suicide attempt and disclosed she had sent naked pictures of a child to a man she met via the internet.

Kelly’s mobile phone was seized by police and analysis revealed chat activity between her and man known as ‘Craig Mwah’ via an application called Kik, the court heard.

It was discovered indecent photographs of the child were sent and there was evidence of discussions around involving the child in a sexual act and arranging a meeting.

Lucy Miller, prosecuting, said Kelly believed she would receive money and a job for the images but when she challenged ‘Craig’ about when this would happen, he then ceased contact.

Kelly appeared before magistrates in Ipswich on Friday and wiped away tears as she pleaded guilty to distributing indecent photographs of a child, arranging the commission of a child sex offence and taking indecent photographs of a child.

She told officers she initially met ‘Craig’ via the internet dating site Plenty of Fish before she began communicating with him and another man called ‘Harry’ – who she believed to be the son of ‘Craig’ – via the Kik messenger application.

Kelly said ‘Craig’ had promised her “a better future” with a job as a PA at his firm.

She said the man had tried to persuade her to act in a sexual way and involve the child but she accepted she had sent the naked photographs.

The court heard that it had not been possible for police to trace either ‘Craig’ or ‘Harry’ via the Kik application.

Kelly has no previous convictions, the court heard.

Magistrates declined jurisdiction and committed the case to the crown court for sentence.

Kelly was granted unconditional bail and must now sign the sex offenders’ register ahead of her sentencing hearing.

Kelly will next appear at Ipswich Crown Court at a date to be fixed.

Susan Barnett – Liverpool

July 2020

“Utterly depraved” avoids prison

An “utterly depraved” fugitive paedophile caught by police has avoided going back to jail – to the anger of one victim’s family.

Susan Barnett went on the run on May 21, when due to be sentenced for breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

That order was imposed after she and her husband Kevin Barnett plotted to sexually abuse children as part of a paedophile love triangle.

Horrific WhatsApp messages exposed the Cumbrian couple’s sick plans with Nikita Moore, with whom they had a threesome.

The trio were all jailed in 2015, but upon her release, Susan, now 33, moved to Merseyside and flouted the terms of the order by contacting two children.

The pervert admitted contacting the children and was granted bail on March 31 for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

But she left her home in Beechwood Road, Litherland and never returned to court, so a warrant was issued for her arrest.

Barnett was arrested in Barrow-in-Furness on May 23 – at a house overlooking a primary school.

Barnett was captured at her mum’s address – was remanded in custody to await sentencing.

However, when dragged back to Liverpool Crown Court, she was handed six months in jail, suspended for 12 months.

Barnett admitted breaching her SHPO “without reasonable excuse” between December 3, 2018 and October 2, 2019 by having “unsupervised contact with a child under the age of 16, without the consent of the child’s parent”.

Prosecutors agreed the prohibited communication with the children was online and not face-to-face contact.

They said it was a deliberate breach, but agreed with defence counsel there was little or no harm caused to the children.

Judge Garrett Byrne said Sentencing Council guidelines for breach offences therefore indicated a starting point for sentence of six months in jail, with a sentencing range of a medium level community order to eight months in jail.

The judge said he then had to give her a 25% discount for her guilty plea, and while he could send her to prison for a short period of time, a pre-sentence report referred to the negative effects of an immediate custodial sentence on her mental health – particularly during the coronavirus pandemic, when prisons are on 23 hours a day lockdown.

Meanwhile, the Probation Service said it believed there was a “realistic prospect of rehabilitation”.

Judge Byrne gave Barnett a two-month home curfew, from 7pm to 6am daily, at a new address in Leyland Road, Southport.

He also told her to attend a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement and ordered the forfeiture and destruction of her mobile phone – upon which she had been contacting the children.

The grandad of one of the children Barnett originally plotted to abuse has now slammed the sentence and branded it “pathetic”.

He said how his grandchild had to go for traumatic medical tests to check whether or not they had been molested.

The furious grandad said: “We knew she [Barnett] was in Liverpool and we knew there was a warrant out for her arrest.

“We didn’t know where she had gone and that’s when we found out she was back in Barrow.

“My daughter nearly bumped into her and my mates had to drag my daughter away from her.

“It’s pathetic – she should be back inside. The original sentence they got was not long enough for what they did.”

Kevin, then 28, was jailed for six years, Susan, then 28, for four and a half years, and Moore, the 22, for four years, in 2015.

The grandad said: “They only did half that then got out. She should have gone back in and finished her sentence off really in my opinion, but that’s my opinion, it’s not the courts.

“In my opinion the courts were too lenient with them. But there’s nothing we can do.

“All I can try and do is protect my daughter by keeping her away from Barnett and my daughter not hitting her and ending up inside.”

The Barnetts and Moore, also from Barrow, were convicted over a June 2014 plot after a disturbing trial at Preston Crown Court in December that year.

A jury heard Moore began an affair with Kevin Barnett shortly after the death of her long term partner Jason Baines, who killed himself in October 2013.

Moore, originally from Birmingham, said they had indulged in “unconventional” sexual practices, but their relationship ended in early 2014, when she discovered he was also having an affair with another woman.

After admitting the affair to Susan Barnett, Moore said the two women had become “really close”, and the spurned wife and former lover even moved in together, after Kevin Barnett left them both for another woman.

But Moore continued to secretly exchange messages with Kevin Barnett, discussing underage sex and sharing indecent images of children, and both she and Susan Barnett then went along with his twisted desires, in a bid to win him back.

Judge Christopher Cornwall described how extreme sexual exchanges between Barnett and the two women descended into plans to abuse children.

He said: “By this time you had all sunk so low and your thinking was so distorted that all basic, fundamental morality protecting children from adult sexual provision was simply absent.”

Susan was told it was to her “eternal shame” that she did not react with “outrage” to her husband’s twisted suggestions.

Moore shared “violent sexual fantasies” with Kevin Barnett and even discussed having a baby with him, for them to abuse together.

She also shared indecent photos of children, and spoke of her desire to see him rape a young child.

Judge Cornwall said: “The offences were committed in quite extraordinary circumstances in which two women were so desperate to rekindle their relationships with Kevin Barnett, that they were prepared to indulge his every terrible whim.

“The content of the messages was truly horrific and utterly depraved.”

The judge accepted there was no evidence any physical abuse was carried out, but said Kevin Barnett was a “baneful influence” on the two women, who had “little understanding” of the harm he had caused.

He told Susan Barnett: “You have a heavy burden to carry, which you will be judged on for some considerable time to come.”

The trio were arrested after an 18-year-old woman, who was in a relationship with Kevin Barnett, tipped police off about messages she had read on his phone.

Kevin Barnett was arrested over a domestic disturbance at her address in June 2014, when Susan Barnett and Moore were living at the couple’s marital home.

He had a sexual liaison with both his wife and Moore the night before, and the following evening had continued to text the pair, while with the third woman.

A row broke out between them and when officers arrived to prevent a breach of the peace, she drew their attention to vile messages on his mobile phone.

Prosecutors said conversations showed Susan Barnett agree to assist in sexual activity with a child and all three discuss gaining access to children.

Susan Barnett suggested she could get a job in child care, while Moore told Kevin Barnett she had thoughts of sexually abusing a child, which he encouraged.

Kevin and Susan Barnett were jointly found guilty of one count of arranging the commission of a child sexual offence, and Kevin Barnett and Moore were jointly convicted of two counts of conspiracy to commit a child sexual offence.

Kevin Barnett and Moore previously admitted offences relating to indecent images of children, while Susan Barnett admitted possessing extreme pornography depicting sex with dogs and horses.

All three denied the charges and argued the texts had been a “fantasy” with no real intent to act on them.

But the jury found the messages represented a genuine plan to abuse children, and they were told to sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

June 2020

Woman, 22, had ‘sexual contact’ three times with a boy, 14

A woman who had sexual contact with a 14-year-old boy she met online has been spared prison.

Sophie Johnson engaged in sexual activity with the schoolboy on three occasions within the space of a few days, a court heard.

Newcastle Crown Court heard she had ignored warnings about his age and failed to take steps to ensure he was over 16.

The court heard Johnson, 22, began communicating with the boy online and they swapped messages before meeting.

Gavin Doig, prosecuting, said: ‘The prosecution case is Miss Johnson did not reasonably believe he was 16 or over and took no steps to find out his age.

‘She ignored the warnings of others but when she found out his age, she desisted.’

The boy did not provide a victim impact statement and while he cooperated with the prosecution, he did not wish to provide any further information, the court heard.

Johnson, of Elswick, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual activity with a child and was sentenced to a three year community order and must sign the sex offenders register for five years.

Woman admits child abuse offences including inciting child prostitution and production of child sexual abuse images

A Whittlesey woman has been sentenced to 19 years custody – spread between hospital and jail – after admitting child sex offences, including rape, inciting prostitution and production of child abuse images

Lee Calder, 31, of Peterborough Road appeared at Peterborough Crown Court on July 23 via video link where she admitted 14 offences.

She admitted seven counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration and four counts of causing or inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity.

Calder also admitted three counts of causing or inciting child prostitution and producing child sexual abuse images or videos

On May 7, Calder’s partner at the time of the abuse, 29-year-old Guy Delph, and his uncle, 28-year-old Kieran Burton, were both jailed for their parts in the crimes.

The men admitted abusing the same four girls, as well as a fifth for three years from birth.

Burton also admitted owning a ‘paedophile manual’ containing advice and guidance on the abuse of children and making more than 35,000 indecent images of children.

Delph, of Kemps Close, Downham Market, Norfolk, was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum term of 12-and-a-half years before being considered for parole.

He had previously admitted rape of a child under 13, four counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, four counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, two counts of causing or inciting child prostitution or pornography and taking an indecent photograph of a child.

He also pleaded guilty to six charges of making indecent images of a child including 136 category A, 100 category B and 1,448 category C; category A being the most severe.

Burton, of Malthouse Road, Downham Market, Norfolk, received a 13-year-sentence, of which he must serve a minimum of eight years in prison before being considered for parole.

He had previously pleaded guilty to causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, distributing indecent photographs of children, possessing an extreme pornographic image, possessing a paedophile manual and five counts of making indecent photographs of a child including 1,935 category A images, 891 category A videos, 2,978 category B images, 678 category B videos, 28,977 category C images and 362 category C videos.

Both men were also made subject of life-long Sexual Harm Prevention Orders (SHPO) and placed on the Sex Offenders Register.

The offending came to light in the spring of 2018, when Burton was being investigated by Norfolk police in connection with indecent images of children being uploaded to an internet messaging platform.

Information was then passed to Cambridgeshire police about Delph, Burton’s nephew, who he claimed they were in regular contact with each other in relation to their mutual interest in indecent images of children and eluded to possible offences taking place in Cambridgeshire.

Further investigation uncovered a number of suspected crimes against children in the Peterborough area by Burton, Delph and Calder.

Four warrants were carried out in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk on 28 October, 2018, resulting in the arrest of all three adults.

Searches of the properties revealed 85 electronic devices, hosting tens of thousands of indecent images and videos of children.

Alongside children as young as one, many of the images included adults who were later confirmed to be Delph and Calder.

Paedophile ring members jailed

A “manipulative” child rapist who shared his abuse images with his uncle has been given a life sentence.

Kieran Burton, 28, and Guy Delph, 29, admitted abusing four girls between three and 10 over a period of two years, and a fifth for three years from birth.

Delph’s girlfriend, Lee Calder, 31, admitted abusing four of the girls.

Burton admitted offences including owning a ‘paedophile manual’ containing advice and guidance on the abuse of children and making more than 35,000 indecent images of children.

Delph sent images to Burton who put them “into wider circulation” with other paedophiles online.

A judge said the offences would be seen with “shock and utter revulsion”.

Delph, of Whittlesey, Peterborough, must serve a minimum of 12 and a half years, and Burton, of Wereham, King’s Lynn, at least eight years.

Judge Matthew Lowe told Peterborough Crown Court that both of the defendants, who had no previous convictions, had a “deep-rooted sexual interest in children, and in particular young children”.

Cambridgeshire Police said the abuse related to four girls aged between three and 10 over a period of two years, and a fifth for three years.

Delph admitted multiple offences, including one count of rape of a child under 13; four counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration; four counts of sexual assault of a child under 13; and two counts of causing or inciting child sex or the creation of child abuse images.

Judge Lowe said Delph, of Peterborough Road, had “manipulative and deceptive character traits”, while he described Burton as an “avid consumer of sexual images of children”.

The court was told Burton was found with a manual “containing instructions for paedophiles”.

Burton, of Malthouse Row, Church Road, was given an extended 13-year jail term, made up of eight years in custody, with an extension of five years.

He pleaded guilty to causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, distributing indecent photographs of children, possessing an extreme pornographic image, possessing a paedophile manual and five counts of making indecent photographs of a child.

Calder, of Peterborough Road, Whittlesey, pleaded guilty to seven counts of assault of a child under 13 by penetration, four counts of causing or inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity and three counts of causing or inciting child prostitution or pornography.

She will be sentenced at a later date.
