Men shared indecent images of children based on hentai-style cartoons

A JUDGE has heard how two men shared indecent images based on the Japanese hentai-style cartoon characters.

Ifan Evans, 31, of Brynawel, Cross Inn, Llanon, was at the time already the subject of a community order for previous similar offending.

Evans admitted possessing indecent images of children and breaching a sexual harm prevention order issued in February, 2015, for 14 offences of having indecent images.

Stephen Brown, aged 30, of Terrace Road, Aberystwyth, admitted two offences of possessing child pornography.

Judge Paul Thomas told Swansea Crown Court he was worried about Evans’ continued offending and said he needed time to consider what sentence to pass.

Evans was remanded into custody and will be sentenced on Tuesday.

Brown was made the subject of a three-year community order, told to complete 30 days of a rehabilitation activity and 150 hours of unpaid work.

He was also issued with a sexual harm prevention order limiting his access to children and his computer activity and told to register with the police as a sex offender.

Stephen Rees, prosecuting, said after Evans had been sentenced in 2015 he was subjected to periodic checks by police officers.

On 19 November 2016, officers noticed suspicious images of a cartoon-like nature on a computer but when they returned the images had been deleted, which Evans had been ordered not to do under the SHPO.

At first Evans denied that he had downloaded the images and said Brown had had access to his computer.

Police examined Brown’s computer equipment and found indecent images of a girl aged about five and 790 hentai-style cartoons similar to those Evans had been looking at.

Judge Thomas told Brown, “If you breach this community order I will send you to jail.

“These images may have been real or otherwise but they show you have an interest in young children and that is very worrying for the courts.

“We have to protect the public and you are close to needing a prison sentence,” he added.

Paedophile said victim would be in ‘serious trouble’ if she told anyone what he was doing

A paedophile who sexually abused a young child told her she would get into “serious trouble” if she told anyone about what he was doing.

Daryl Grant, 48, deliberately isolated his victim and then systematically abused her over a three-year period, leaving her struggling to form relationships many years later as an adult.

Grant denied the charges against him but was found guilty by a jury after trial of five counts of sexually abusing a child.

Speaking at Cardiff Crown Court, prosecutor Nicola Powell said the girl was of primary school age when the offending began.

In her evidence the victim said Grant told her she would get into “serious trouble” if she told anyone about what he was doing.

She told the court she believed at the time that his behaviour was “normal”.

In a victim personal statement she said the abuse – which occurred about a decade ago – had affected her ability to form relationships, particularly with men.

She said she did not like to be near male teachers at school and now feels anxious for her own children.

Grant, from Newcastle Emlyn, was convicted of sexual assault of a child, sexual activity with a child, and three counts of rape.

He appeared via video link from HM Parc Prison for the hearing before Judge Neil Bidder QC.

The judge said he was “unhappy” arrangements had not been made for the defendant to be produced at court.

He said: “I consider it is important in a case such as this that a defendant should stand in the dock in public view.”

Corina Hughes, defending, said her client was disabled and required specialist transport, which was not available on the day.

The court heard he had his leg amputated at the hip and wears a prosthetic limb.

She said her client consented to be sentenced over the video link, adding: “He would like some finality.”

Ms Hughes accepted: “There is very limited mitigation.”

She told the court her client had never been to prison before and would suffer “severe discomfort” in jail due to his disability.

Judge Bidder noted there was “significant planning” and “archetypal grooming behaviour”.

He said: “We are dealing with a young child.”

In his sentencing remarks, he told the defendant: “I have to sentence you for serious sexual abuse of a child.

“I have no doubt you groomed the child so you could abuse her. She trusted you and you abused that trust.”

The judge added: “It is quite clear that you have a strong sexual interest in children.

“The gravity of these offences is obviously such that only an immediate and lengthy custodial term can be imposed upon you.”

He found an extended sentence was not necessary and jailed Grant for 13 years with a one-year licence period.

Judge Bidder imposed an indefinite restraining order, Sexual Harm Prevention Order and notification requirements.

Aberystwyth man jailed for sexually abusing three girls

A 39-year-old man has been jailed for 15 years for a series of sexual offences against three girls.

Owain Llyr Thomas, from Aberystwyth, was found guilty of 23 charges, including sexual assault of a person under the age of 13, in February.

The offences took place between 1995 and 2007 and one of his victims was under five when the abuse started.

Sentencing him at Swansea Crown Court, Judge Mervyn Hughes said the offences were “significant and serious”.

Thomas must serve a minimum of seven-and-a-half years in prison.

Speaking of the effect of the offences on the victims, the judge told Thomas: “It can be said that you’ve almost destroyed their lives.”

Mandy Tobias, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “Owain Llyr Thomas subjected three very young girls to sexual abuse, two of them repeatedly.

“There is only one explanation why he did so, and that was for his own pleasure.”

February 2018

Prison for child sex offender

AN Aberystwyth child sex offender has been warned he will receive a “considerable and lengthy” prison sentence after he was convicted of sexual molesting three young girls.

Owain Llyr Thomas, 39, of Garth Celyn, St Davids Road, had denied all the charges against him but a jury at Swansea Crown Court returned unanimous guilty verdicts after only one hour of deliberation.

Catherine Richards, prosecuting, said his victims had “buried” what he had done to them until later in life when they began to confide in adults they trusted.

After his arrest Thomas refused to answer police questions but gave officers a prepared statement in which he claimed all the allegations had been false.

Following the verdicts, Judge T Mervyn Hughes immediately remanded Thomas to jail.

The offending had been serious, he added, and only a “considerable and lengthy” prison sentence could be the outcome.

Thomas will be sentenced in March.

Aberystwyth man killed himself after indecent images plea

A man took his own life after admitting the possession of indecent images, a coroner has ruled.

Alan William Burrell, 54, was found by police in his Aberystwyth flat on 8 February this year, after last being seen by a neighbour five days earlier.

He had admitted three charges at the town’s magistrates’ court on 31 January and been bailed ahead of sentencing at Swansea Crown Court on 23 February.

Coroner Peter Brunton recorded a conclusion of suicide.

A post-mortem examination found the cause of death was a toxic combination of prescription drugs and alcohol.

Burrell had been diagnosed with depression in 2010 and with leukaemia in January this year.

Mr Brunton told Aberystwyth Justice Centre on Wednesday it was “quite clear” from a note left by Burrell that he was “concerned about what was going to happen at the crown court” and was “under extreme pressure”.

“He could not go on facing the consequences of his actions,” Mr Brunton said.

February 2018

Man admits possession of 13,000 indecent images of children

AN Aberystwyth man will be sentenced in Swansea Crown Court after he admitted possession of over 13,000 indecent images of children.

Alan William Burrell, 54, pleaded guilty to three charges of making indecent images of children by downloading images of different categories found on his computer by police officers executing a search warrant.

Prosecutor Helen Tench said checks of Burrell’s computer had discovered three images of Category A, the most serious category, with 41 images rated as being Category B and 13,279 Category C images.

She said internet searches made by Burrell, of 7 Everton House, Cliff Terrace, contained search terms including ‘jailbait’ and ‘tiny’, with the images consisting of girls who appeared to be aged between 12 and 16.

Ms Tench said that, while it was a large amount of images, the vast majority of the images were in the lowest category, but despite that magistrates ruled Burrell should be sentenced at crown court.

Defence solicitor Alan Lewis said there was considerable mitigation for Burrell, but said that would be heard by the sentencing court.

Burrell was released on unconditional bail until a sentencing hearing on 23 February.

He will have to register as a sex offender in the meantime.

In 2010, another man was sentenced for almost identical offences against the same victim

Prosecution told the court that the 13 year old girl had confided in Weston about the earlier abuse because she thought she could trust him

Weston exchanged messages with the girl and went on to ask her for naked photos

Later, he progressed to kissing her and touching her intimately

The judge sentenced to Weston to five years in prison of which he must serve half.
