17 years’ jail for paedophile pensioner who targeted girls as young as five

A Newcastle Emlyn pensioner convicted of sex offences against girls aged as young as five has been jailed this morning for 17 years.

Christopher Tatton, aged 73, of Ty Maris, Llandyfriog, had been found guilty of all the offences of indecent assault following a trial at Swansea Crown Court.

His barrister, Ian Ibrahim, said the day after his convictions he had suffered a heart attack after being remanded to Parc prison, near Bridgend.

He was now awaiting a heart bypass operation, said Mr Ibrahim.

Tatton had denied the offences.

Today, Judge Paul Thomas told Tatton he had robbed the girls of their childhoods and the effects of his offending had plagued their adulthoods.

“I have been asked to show compassion to you. I shall do so,” the judge said.

“However, I am bound to say you showed no compassion to those girls.

“You put your twisted sexual urges before their rights to grow up in a proper way.”

Judge Thomas also criticised Tatton for “trying to brazen your way out to save your own skin” and putting his victims through a trial where they were accused of being liars.

Judge Thomas passed an extended sentence and after his eventual release Tatton will be on licence and liable to be recalled to prison until 2039.

Teifi Valley pensioner found guilty of sexually abusing young girls

A Newcastle Emlyn pensioner has been warned he will serve years in jail after a jury convicted him of sexually abusing young girls.

Christopher James Tatton was told he would receive a substantial prison sentence despite being 72 years of age and in poor health.

Tatton, of Llandyfriog, was found guilty on Monday of multiple offences of indecent assault against three girls following a trial at Swansea crown court.

Tatton was convicted by majority verdicts and immediately remanded into custody.

Judge Paul Thomas warned him that a lengthy sentence would be the outcome but he needed to consider medical evidence before deciding on the term.

Tatton, who was once a volunteer on the Teifi Valley narrow gauge railway, had denied the charges and claimed the complaints had been invented.

Tatton will be sentenced on 9 March.

Baby died after mum took him clubbing then drunkenly fell asleep on him in caravan

A new mum whose four-week-old baby died after she drunkenly fell asleep on him after taking him to a nightclub has been jailed.

Marina Tilby, 26, took son Darian back to a caravan with two men she met on a night out in New Quay in Wales.

She had been clubbing with her sister, and was seen repeatedly throwing and catching her son on the night out.

Yesterday a judge branded the incident a “dreadful case of maternal selfishness” and criticised the mum for the “deliberate neglect” of her child.

Swansea Crown Court heard the baby boy was found unresponsive with blood in his mouth lying next to Tilby in the early hours of March 31, 2017.

Boozy mum took baby to nightclub and tot died when she fell asleep on top of him

Tilby was so drunk she was unable to be roused from her sleep by her sister, who had also stayed at the caravan, for more than an hour.

Baby Darian was taken to Bronglais hospital, where he later died.

Prosecutor Catherine Richards said Tilby had drunkenly fallen asleep on top of her child, but medical evidence could not prove her rolling on top of him contributed to his death or rule out he may have suffered sudden infant death syndrome.

Judge Paul Thomas told Tilby she had “completely ignored” her duty to protect her son and said it would never be known if doctors would have been able to save him if she had raised the alarm sooner.

He also expressed his “unease” that it could not be proved what caused the baby’s death.

The judge said: “It is a mother’s responsibility, a mother’s duty, and her natural instinct to put the care and safety of her four-week old child above all else.

“You completely ignored that duty so you could get extremely drunk on a night-out.

“So drunk were you that you fell into a deep sleep and slept on top of your baby. There came a time when he was not moving. He had blood in his mouth, but you didn’t realise because you were so drunk.

“You showed deliberate disregard for the welfare of your son.”

Tilby, from Llwyncelyn in Aberaeron, Ceredigion, was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.

Man had sex with 14-year-old Sunderland girl after grooming her on Facebook

A man who had sex with an underage girl after grooming her on Facebook has been jailed for four years.

Shane Blackmore, who was 20, exchanged explicit messages with the 14-year-old over the social networking site.

He then invited her to his shared flat, where he convinced her to have sex in a room where his friends were sleeping.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the girl, who had told her mother she was staying over at a friend’s house, had been “reluctant” to engage in sex acts, but Blackmore had become angry when she refused.

Prosecutor Julian Smith, said: “He was asking her to have sex with him, as she had put him in that state, of arousal, and she ought to get him out of it.”

Blackmore, now 22, who was living in a bedsit at the Cloisters in Sunderland when the offences took place, admitted grooming and sexual activity with a child.

The court heard the girl told a friend she “hated herself” for what she had agreed to that night, and has been deeply affected by her ordeal.

Judge Deborah Sherwin said Blackmore must abide by the terms of a sexual offences prevention order, and sign the Sex Offenders’ register for life.

The judge said: “I have read the victim impact statement which sets out what has happened to her. She comes over as an intelligent young lady.

“She shows all the immaturity one might expect of a young girl her age. These matters have clearly effected her and her family greatly.”

The court hear Blackmore had pestered the girl to send him indecent pictures of herself, and had sent her images of his private parts before the night at his bedsit.
