Shamed former Oban cop caught with sickening child abuse images including one of a baby is jailed for eight months
A perverted ex-cop with thirty years’ service has been jailed for eight months after being caught with a haul of child abuse images including a sickening video of a baby.
Darryll Burnside, 50, was sentenced at Oban Sheriff Court today after pleading guilty to having indecent photos of children in his possession between September 13, 2016 and October 13 last year.
The images, discovered after a police raid on his home in Nant Drive, Oban, included one of a baby, who was said to be in obvious distress, and others of girls in their early teens.
Procurator Fiscal Eoin McGinty had told an earlier hearing that 13 officers from Oban went to Burnside’s home with cyber crime officers last October, as a result of an intelligence led operation.
Police seized a tablet and a kindle owned by Burnside, who admitted using the devices to view the sickening images.
The tablet had seven images of the worst category A type, one category B and 49 category C, while the kindle had three category A moving images and three category C still images.
Sheriff Patrick Hughes said the social work report had told of the good work which Burnside had done in his police career.
He added: “There are people who are alive today who would not be alive but for the bravery you have demonstrated in your public service as a police officer.”
The sheriff said that he may have been persuaded by Ms Beaumont’s plea for a non-custodial sentence, had it not been for the severity of some of the images Burnside had in his possession.
Sheriff Hughes said the Category A images showed the penetration of children, which had involved a great amount of suffering to those children.
He added that a custodial sentence therefore was appropriate, but he reduced the jail term from 12 months to eight months to take account of the accused’ early guilty plea.
Burnside, who has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register, will be subject to the notification requirements of the Sexual Offences Act for ten years.
