Man ‘filmed his assaults on children’

Jeffery

A church volunteer carried out a string of attacks on two young boys he befriended through an adventure week a court heard.

Colin Ian Jeffery appeared at Guildford Crown Court on Monday (February 9th) accused of committing five indecent assaults in the 1980s.

The court was told that Jeffery, of Newcastle Rise, Caterham, got to know his victims; then aged about 12 and 13, through St Mary’s Church in Bletchingley.

The 61-year old helped out during services and volunteered to help run the summer camp. His first alleged victim, now 34 and a senior police officer outside Surrey, told the court Jeffery often filmed the children using his cine camera at various church events.

He said Jeffery assaulted him in a room in the church hall after telling him and another boy that he “wanted to make an experiment” with them.

He said he was fondled as he stood on a chair as his friend waited outside. He said “That went on for about one-and-a-half minutes. Physically I froze. Mentally I was shocked. I just stood there wanting it to stop. I didn’t really know what to do. Then he stopped and walked back to the camera and I clearly remember him saying ‘Oh no, it didn’t record’.”

The officer told the jury he was extremely wary of Jeffery afterwards and made sure he was never alone with him again.

He did not tell anyone for 22 years until he was working as a policeman on the management of sex offenders within the community and he realised that it had probably not just happened to him.

The court had earlier heard that Jeffery had assaulted him at an adventure camp, had filmed him and assaulted him on a walk on the South Downs and in Guildford Cathedral.

Jeffery allegedly assaulted his second victim in a house at St Mary’s church after filming him with another boy.

The court heard the assault stopped after half an hour when the defendant had a problem with his camera.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between 1978 and 1983.

The jury heard the first victim went to police in 2002 and as a result it was discovered the second boy had an allegation to make. They did not know each other and Jeffery denied all the charges.

He was sentenced in March 2004 to a community rehabilitation order for 2 years, with a condition not to work with children in the future. He was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 5 years.

In 2005, Jeffery appealed his conviction. His appeal to the conviction was dismissed by the courts.

This is the face of leering paedophile John Carvin looking out of a window just yards from a playground.

The 45-year-old dodged prison last month for sexually assaulting his brother’s stepdaughter when she was seven.

But his presence was only made widely known to residents in the Holywell neighbourhood of Swords, Co Dublin, after his house was daubed with graffiti at the weekend that read “paedophile”.

Disgusted locals have now started a campaign to kick him out, staging a protest on Monday evening and last night outside his house.

The pictures show that public pressure may be getting to the sex offender as he appears to be considering fortifying his home which is just across from a popular playground.

Carvin, who has not been seen outside his house since Monday, even refused to leave the property when a tradesman called to the door, instead speaking to him through the window.

The worker appeared to be checking the locks on the pervert’s windows, one of which seemed to be broken, as Carvin looked on wearing a vest.

A Garda spokesman said officers are investigating an incident of criminal damage – a broken window – which took place in the area at around 10pm on Monday.

When the Irish Mirror called to Carvin’s home yesterday, he didn’t even step outside his hall door to speak to our reporter.

He only opened it long enough to say: “I’m not making any comments, none whatsoever.”

Carvin now faces an uphill battle to stay in his home with locals set to step up their campaign to get rid of him – planning even more demonstrations outside the house.

One resident, who wanted to be identified only as Michael, said: “He’ll move on to another area now, he has to.

“I think most people didn’t know until his house was sprayed and the protest helped raise awareness.

“There are more protests planned now, there will be people protesting outside his house every day. He went into a pub the other day and he was recognised and thrown out, he’s becoming blacklisted in the area.

“There are kids going back to school in a few weeks, I’d say people will be spreading the word.

“I’m a father, I have four young kids myself and I wouldn’t bring my kids near the playground.

“People are mad about the fact he didn’t go to jail. He wasn’t properly punished, I think it is a disgrace. There will be more protests now as word spreads.”

Carvin’s victim refused to meet with him after he was found guilty of sexual assault. On the night of the abuse almost 14 years ago, he climbed into the seven-year-old’s bed, kissing and rubbing her.

The sicko left but then returned shortly afterwards, making the girl perform a sexual act.

Imposing his sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court last month, the judge said the abuse was “at the lower end of the scale” and added the offence seemed to be a one-off.Carvin was handed a three-year suspended sentence.

Family members run from courtroom as paedophile gets fully suspended sentence

A man who sexually abused a family member has avoided a jail sentence after his victim refused to meet him under the Restorative Justice Programme.

Earlier this month Judge Patrick McCartan asked the victim to consider meeting John Carvin (45) under programme before he passes sentence.

The man was convicted last April of sexually assaulting the then seven year old after climbing into her bed late at night.

The court that the man was sleeping in the room beside the girl on the night of the abuse. During the night he climbed into her bed and began kissing and rubbing her.

He left but returned shortly afterwards and made her masturbate him before telling her “to get on top.” She refused and the man fell asleep. He was later discovered in the bed by another family member who told him to get out.

He was acquitted of sexually assaulting her on two other occasions.

At the previous sentence hearing, the judge said he was suggesting the programme because “this is a close family that is badly fractured by what has occurred.

“If there is a prospect that this can be put right then this might well be an option that is worth exploring.”

The court heard from Fiona Murphy BL, prosecuting, that the victim does not want to meet with Carvin.

The victim also waived her right to anonymity so he can be publicly named.

Carvin initially refused to accept the jury’s verdict but his counsel said that he has changed his mind.

Judge McCartan said it was understand that the victim does not want to meet Carvin as it would involve her reliving the abuse “in very challenging circumstances.”

He said he had investigated the programme as a possibility “in the hope that some reparation of the family relationship might be achieved.”

The Restorative Justice Programme, which is run by the Probation Service, involves parties meeting in a supervised setting to discuss the effects a crime had on the victim.

Imposing sentence, the judge noted that Carvin forced the now 20-year-old victim to go through a trial process by refusing to admit his guilt.

He also observed that he “challenged very strongly” the victim’s version of events, effectively saying she was lying.

However he said that the abuse was at the lower end of the scale and Carvin has belatedly admitted his guilt. He imposed a three year sentence suspended in full for three years.

There were emotional scenes from the victim’s supporters and one of her family members ran out of the courtroom as the non-custodial sentence was handed down.

Carvin of Holywell Crescent, Swords pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to three instances of sexual assault on the child in Dublin on dates between October 2000 and February 2001.

In a victim impact report the woman said that she suffered considerable stress and anxiety as the trial approached.

She said she had nightmares about the abuse and the trial, including dreaming that the judge would shout at her and tell her that she was lying.

Defence counsel Caroline Biggs SC said that her client married in 2010 and has the support of his wife. She said he has a good work record and may keep his job depending on whether the judge sends him to prison.

Pauline Judge – Aberdeen

Woman shared child abuse images in exchange for mobile phone top-ups

aberdeen

A woman who shared indecent images of children with paedophiles in exchange for mobile phone top-ups has escaped jail.

Pauline Judge, 33, posed as teenage girls on the internet to talk to sex offenders in America.

She sent them dozens of vile pictures of children she found on-line after they topped up the credit on her mobile phone.

Police recovered 416 illegal images and six videos on computer equipment seized during a raid on her Aberdeen home.

Some of the children were engaged in erotic posing, and some were shown having sex with each other and adults. The youngsters were aged between six months and 15 years old.

Judge admitted two child pornography charges when she appeared in court earlier this year and the case was adjourned for background reports.

She was sentenced at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Wednesday and ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work in the community.

Defence lawyer Tony Burgess told the court that his client had suffered a traumatic childhood and suffered depression.

He said: “A catalyst to her depression that turned to desperation and loneliness was the death of her father when she was 13 years of age.

“From the reports it’s clear that Miss Judge is standing before this court fully accepting of the wrong that she has done and awaiting her punishment.”

Mr Burgess said his client had taken positive steps since committing the two offences and her family were “extremely supportive” of her.

He said Judge recently had to move home because she had become the subject of public condemnation.

The court previously heard that police received intelligence last year of a UK internet user chatting to someone in the US about indecent images of children online.

Police officers explained the nature of the information they had received when they visited Judge at her home.

Fiscal depute Felicity Merson said: “She was cautioned and intimated that she had sent indecent images in return for top-up credits on her mobile phone.”

Forensic examinations of items seized from her house were carried out. The court heard the images recovered contained children being raped and abused featured babies as young as six months old up to teenagers aged 15.

Officers were unable to tell which images were sent but found that the text related to prepubescent girls.

The court heard that it appeared to be the case that Judge had pretended to be a young girl engaging in chats.

Evidence also revealed that the computer user had visited chat rooms where people had an interest in chatting about sex with youngsters and babies.

Judge previously pled guilty to a charge of taking, permitting or making indecent photographs of children between January 10, 2012 and June 27 last year.

She admitted a further charge of distributing or showing images between September 20, 2012 and June 27 last year.

Sheriff William Summers told the court that there was a victim for every image of child pornography. But he said he was satisfied that there was an alternative sentence available other than custody.

He ordered Judge to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work and placed her on a three year supervision order. The Judge will was also put on the sex offender’s register for three years.

50 yr old bus pervert sexually assaulted seven schoolgirls in six days – Jailed for 1 yr

Daren Carl

A pervert who sexually assaulted seven girls in six days, preying on them as they travelled to school, has been jailed for a year.

Daren Carl, 50, of Goodhew Road, Woodside, groped the schoolgirls – most aged 13 – as they travelled on crowded buses and trams inWimbledon.

The 50-year-old kept a notebook containing details of which bus routes “nice-looking” girls commuted on and was also found with a video camera that had recorded footage of a teenage girl’s cleavage.

Carl carried out eight sexual assaults between January 22 and January 28 this year, touching each of his victims on the bottom or breasts, Kingston Crown Court heard yesterday.

Seven of the girls he assaulted were aged 13 and one was 16. All were dressed in school uniform and “obviously going to school,” prosecutor Liz Lockwood told the court.

Carl assaulted two of the victims, both 13, on the same 57 bus just minutes apart from each other on January 22.

Five days later, he targeted the first victim again on the same bus. Miss Lockwood said: “He kept looking back at her to see where she was. She moved as far away from him as she could but kept moving towards her so she had nowhere to go.

“She tried to move away but she describes the defendant blocking her way. He moved his elbow up to her breast area and the point of his elbow stroked her breast. She tried to stop him but could not move him.”

Miss Lockwood read statements from two of Carl’s victims, one of whom was two frightened to use public transport for a week following the attack. Another, the 16-year-old, described herself as “very upset, tears in her eyes and feeling physically sick.”

Carl was arrested after plain-clothed police officers boarded a bus with one victim to identify him. The officers witnessed Carl assaulting another girl before the arrest.

Clea Topolski, defending Carl, said his “remorse was palpable and comes in many forms”. She asked judge Nicholas Carphely to consider imposing a suspsended jail term because Carl, who sobbed in the dock, feared losing his house of 19 years and pet dog, his only companion.

But Mr Carphely said the volume of Carl’s offences demanded an immediate custodial sentence. He also banned Carl was sitting near young girls on public transport or photographing and filming them in public for ten years.
