Love note paedophile finally faces justice nearly two decades later

A predatory paedophile has been handed a long prison term following his conviction for the sexual touching of a young girl.

Edward Coleman, 44, abused the girl nearly 20 years ago and then sent her love notes years later.

Coleman, now of Surrey, was convicted following a trial at Truro Crown Court of three sexual assaults of a girl under 13, assault by penetration and five counts of sexual activity with a child.

Prosecuting the case, Heather Hope told the jury that it involves touching of the chest and genitals, digital penetration, oral sex and imitating sex acts, offences committed in the St Austell area.

Miss Hope said that during some of the abuse the defendant “smelt of alcohol” and that the complainant would try to get away when Coleman tried to get her to masturbate him.

Miss Hope went on to graphically describe how Coleman sexually abused the victim.

Miss Hope said the abuse eventually came to an end when the complainant stood up to Coleman, although he continued to photograph her and continue to express an interest in her.

Coleman later sent the complainant Facebook messages which included hearts carved into trees with their initials and suggested they spent a night together in Newquay.

The abuse was eventually reported when the complainant spoke to a woman in a pub before finding the courage to tell her partner, mother and then the police.

On behalf of Coleman, Ed Bailey said he was an otherwise decent, hard working man who worked mainly as a lorry driver. Coleman was said to be in bad health and someone who has made significant charitable donations.

Sentencing Coleman, Judge Robert Linford said he perpetrated years of abuse on the victim.

Coleman was jailed for 10 years with a further year to be served on licence after release.

‘Dangerous sexual predator’ tried to lure teens into Primark changing rooms

A sexual predator who tried to lure two teenagers into Primark changing rooms to search them by posing as a security officer has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order.

Benjamin Cooley, of Ferry Lane in Guildford, was not fit to enter a plea but the jury found he did commit the offences of attempted kidnap and breach of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order at Guildford Crown Court on Thursday (March 11).

The incident happened on November 20, 2019, when Cooley approached the teenagers in Primark and, telling them he was a security guard, led them to the changing rooms.

Before Cooley could carry out the searches, he was challenged by a store employee.

However, he didn’t stop there and instead walked the teenagers to another area within the shopping centre where he tried to get them into a cupboard to carry out a search.

At this point, they became suspicious and asked for identification. When he couldn’t provide any, they left.

The victims reported what happened to police who later arrested Cooley.

He was already subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order issued against him in November 2017, so he was also charged with breaching the terms of this order.

Ex-police officer jailed for 29 years for child sexual abuse offences

A former police officer and children’s football coach convicted of multiple counts of sexual abuse of at least 15 children over more than four decades has been sentenced to 29 years in jail.

Stephen Henry Walker, 68, formerly of Chipstead Lane, Lower Kingswood, Tadworth was found guilty of 40 charges of sexual assault relating to 15 victims, both boys and girls, following two criminal trials at Croydon crown court earlier this year.

He was convicted of 33 counts of sexual assault in the first trial, which lasted more than seven weeks, and a further seven counts of abuse in the second.

Walker, who worked as a salesman and was a Metropolitan police officer for about a year, was also a coach for a number of children’s football teams, where he met some of the victims, while others were children he knew through family friends.

Although the majority of the offences were committed in Surrey, Walker also abused children in France and Malta and other locations outside the UK.

An investigation into his offending was launched after one of the victims came forward in March 2018. As the enquiries progressed, his strong sexual interest in children, particularly boys – although two of the victims were girls – became apparent.

The offences included sexual assaults, gross indecency with children, inciting a child to commit an act of gross indecency, as well as offences of attempted buggery and buggery of some of the children.

The offences took place between 1966 and 2007.

Once the full extent of Walker’s abuse began to emerge, he fled to Malta, where he lived under an alias.

He returned to the UK in October 2019 and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of child sexual abuse offences.

Two days later, he was charged and remanded in custody.

Surrey police’s complex abuse team located other potential victims and witnesses. This resulted in a large number of victims being identified and led to further charges being laid against Walker while he was on remand.

Many of Walker’s victims were in court for Monday’s sentencing hearing. Some read out prepared impact statements, others requested their barristers read their statements for them.

They detailed emotional problems triggered by Walker’s abuse, including addiction, psychiatric problems and difficulty forming relationships.

One woman, who was abused at the age of 11 and is now 66, said: “The pain has never gone away. I suffered enormous guilt that I allowed it to happen.”

Another said: “I have not spoken about what Stephen Walker did to me for over 40 years. It’s something I tried to forget and put it behind me. He told me there was nothing wrong with what he did. It was a child’s word against an adult’s.”

A third said of being able to provide the impact statement: “I’m glad I have had the chance to speak out and be believed.”

A fourth said he was mad about football and would have done anything to please Walker. “It’s hard to explain what someone like Stephen does to you. He gets inside your psyche. He sexually abused me without a thought for the pain he caused to an innocent boy.”

One man, convinced that abused children grow up to become abusers, left his own children when they were small, for fear of harming them. He is now reunited with his family and has good relationships with them but said “the loss of those wonderful early years is irretrievable”.

Walker was brought to court on Monday for sentencing but refused to enter the courtroom to listen to the impact statements or to hear his sentence.

Judge Elizabeth Smaller said he was a serial child sexual abuser who “chose those who were vulnerable or who he perceived to be vulnerable … or who he felt would be unlikely to be believed”.

The judge imposed sentences for the different offences to run concurrently with the longest sentence of 28 years with an extended one year of licence.

He will have to serve a minimum of 14 years before he can apply for parole

Victim of paedophile former Surrey head teacher says abuse ‘ended my childhood’ as he’s jailed

A former Surrey head teacher has been jailed after justice was finally served more than 30 years after he sexually abused a girl on multiple occasions.

Over a period of three years during the 1980s, Colin Brooks, now 77, took advantage of the girl’s vulnerability to exploit her sexually, forcing her to perform sex acts on him at “every opportunity” according to the judge who sentenced him.

He has been sentenced to 28 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to seven counts of indecent assault on the female victim, having initially accused her of making up the abuse.

The defendant, who had since moved to Brixham, in Devon, previously worked as a teacher and headmaster at various educational establishments across the South East of England.

He became the head teacher at The Grove School in Hindhead during the 1980s. The school is now known as The Royal School.

A sentencing hearing on Monday (May 17) at Guildford Crown Court heard the sexual abuse began in the 1980s when the victim was a teenager, with the first offence taking place during a car journey.

Prosecutor Adrian Fleming said: “[Brooks] put his hand on hers to keep it on his leg. He then moved her hand up to near his groin. She became aware that he had an erection.”

He added that Brooks “pulled the car over, stopped, unzipped his flies” and placed her hand on his privates, before driving on. He only removed it near the end of the journey, “and for the first time of many, he told her ‘this is our secret, don’t tell anyone’.”

The court heard how Brooks made “more serious threats” to enforce her silence, including that if she told her mother, she would be sent away or placed into the care system.

The abuse continued over a three-year period, during which he kissed her and felt her breasts and she was forced to perform oral sex and other acts on him.

Mr Fleming said Brooks visited the victim’s house and went into her bedroom “under the pretence of saying goodnight”. He said he “showed her how to give him the most pleasure”.

The victim, who appeared at Guildford Crown Court for the sentencing hearing, read aloud an emotional impact statement to the court, detailing her “most painful memories”.

She said: “The evening when things began not only shook me to the core, but effectively ended my childhood. I was fairly grown up for my age, but this was on an altogether different scale.

“It meant I grew up far more quickly than I should have done and I also learned to be an efficient liar.”

After the abuse ended, the victim said she “learned to live with the after-effects of what happened” and hoped to put the past behind her.

However, she was forced to disclose the sexual abuse to police years later when one of her former partners made allegations which implicated the wrong man.

She completed a video interview on November 14, 2018, and Brooks was arrested and interviewed on January 4, 2019, the court heard.

In that interview, he denied all the offences, claiming they were “fabrications of the worst kind”.

He was interviewed a second time on November 28, 2019 and “persisted in those denials”. He was later charged and pleaded guilty to all seven counts of indecent assault.

‘Manipulative’ paedophile posted explicit videos of children into secret chat group

A “predatory and manipulative” paedophile posted indecent videos of children into a secret chat group.

James Jeffrey, 45, also did all he could to prevent police from discovering the explicit conversations he was having with a 14-year-old girl on WhatsApp and Facebook.

In 2018, Surrey Police received intelligence that an email address was being used to post indecent videos of children into an online chat group.

The email address was traced to Jeffrey, and he was arrested at his place of work.

Officers carried out a search of his home address in Cherry Orchard Road, West Molesey, just outside London, and recovered three phones.

However, the devices were PIN-protected and Jeffrey was “uncooperative” and refused to provide police with the correct codes.

Investigators, though, were finally able to crack the codes and gain access to the phones with the assistance of a forensics lab.

Officers were then able to uncover a series of explicit WhatsApp and Facebook messenger chats on one of the devices between Jeffrey and the 14-year-old girl.

Following a trial at Kingston Crown Court in March, Jeffrey was found guilty of sexual communication with a child, causing a child to watch a sexual act and two charges of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

He had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing an extreme pornographic image.

Jeffrey appeared at the same court on Tuesday (May 11) to be sentenced.

He was jailed for five years and made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
