‘Horrific’ Scots sex offender jailed after string of rapes and sex attacks on women and children

A Scottish serial sex offender has been jailed for a decade after a string of ‘horrific’ rapes and sex attacks against women and children over a nearly 30-year period.

Hotel receptionist Edwin Cuschieri, of Helliar Way, Shapinsay, Orkney, was found guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh of six charges, including rapes, sexual assaults and indecent assaults against two women and a number of children on the island between 1988 and 2016.

The 67-year-old has now been handed a 10 year sentence and placed on the sex offenders register for life

All of the offences were committed in Orkney between 1988 and 2016.

Cuschieri’s first victim was a woman who was subjected to repeated rapes at different addresses.

During the assaults, between 1988 and 1994, she was pulled by the hair and subjected to derogatory remarks by her abuser.

His youngest victim was aged eight or nine when he raped her at a house on one of the islands in Orkney between 1997 and 2001.

She told the court that she was the victim of a sexual assault which haunted her for years.

In August 2016, the former driver carried out an attack on another woman at a house in Kirkwall and molested her. DNA evidence linking Cuschieri to the crime was found on her bra.

The distressed victim revealed what had taken place to her mother and the police were contacted.

Between May 2014 and 2016 another woman was subjected to sexual assault by him on occasions in Kirkwall when he touched her and made sexualised remarks and comments to her.

The 50-year-old victim told the court that on one occasion he pushed her and told her that if another woman was not present he would have carried out a sex act on her.

On another visit she was left feeling uncomfortable after he touched her in a way that was inappropriate.

Cuschieri told the court that he had first moved to Scotland to work as a diver off Caithness but moved on to Orkney to make “a new start”.

Nottingham teacher’s jail sentence extended after admitting further offences

Roger-Caffrey

A former Nottingham junior school teacher, who is serving a 17-and-a-half year sentence for sexually abusing pupils, will be serving an additional ten months after admitting indecently assaulting three more victims.

Roger Caffrey, 72, previously of Sandesquoy, Tankerness, Orkney, admitted nine charges of indecent assault on three victims when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday 21 July, 2017.

He was sentenced today (4 August), having now been convicted of offences against a total of ten victims.

Some offences took place when he was Deputy Head at Northgate Primary School in Old Basford, Nottingham and in several cases the offences were committed during lesson time.

The victims, who came forward as a result of publicity following the original trial, were girls aged nine or ten-years-old at the time of the offences.

Former deputy head jailed for more than 17 years for indecent assaults on ex-pupils

Pervert ex-teacher Roger Caffrey has been jailed for more than 17 years for rapes and indecent assaults on young girls.

Judge Timothy Spencer, who sentenced the shamed 70-year-old former deputy head, said he must have enjoyed a sense of complete power over the girls he abused.

“In my judgement you enjoyed that power and exploited it shamelessly,” said the judge on Thursday afternoon.

The court had heard how Caffrey put his hand up girls’ skirts as they read at his large desk at North Gate Primary School, in Old Basford, Nottingham where he previously taught boys and girls.

He touched at least two girls in a store cupboard, his trial at Nottingham Crown Court was told.

One of those he held a particular “maligned power over”, said the judge.

Caffrey had asked her to stay behind, leaving her isolated and helpless.

He abused her when she was effectively trapped in the storeroom with him.

The popular teacher then repeatedly raped her at his Wollaton home, when her mother volunteered her for chores, the jury had heard.

Caffrey, a former well-built rugby player, was to strike again years later, raping a 19-year-old woman who visited his marital home in Stanton-on-the-Wolds.

The judge said once again Caffrey had engineered a situation on the pretext of helping him with chores.

The teenager was invited upstairs, pinned down on the martial bed, overpowered and raped – although he insisted later to police what happened was consensual.

The victim went to police 22 years ago but no charges were brought.

Judge Spencer said she was “let down” by the attitudes of society and the legal system.

Jurors heard how her case had remained forgotten until recently when more victims went to police.

“She was let down 20 years ago but, in my judgement, she has not been let down again,” said Judge Spencer.

He said Caffrey had deliberately targeted the victims, many who were in court to see him punished.

The judge concluded Caffrey had calculated they were ripe for this sort of abuse and calculated, for various reasons, they would not tell.

“The classroom and school was a place where they must have felt safe or secure, they must have felt anything but,” he stressed.

Caffrey, of Sandesquoy, Tankerness, Orkney, was found guilty of three rape charges and 12 indecent assaults, but was cleared on two indecent assault allegations.

The judge passed a total sentence of 17-and-a-half years on all charges and ordered Caffrey sign the sex offenders’ register. He is automatically barred from working with children.

The jury, who spent more than 24 hours deliberating over several days, made the unusual move of sending a note to the judge, which expressed their admiration for the victims who were clearly upset in court.

The letter ended: “We hope this verdict brings some closure to the victims.”

Judge Spencer thanked them for working assiduously and made them exempt from jury service for ten years.

Paedophile jailed for 11 years

Vincent Baker

Police in Orkney have welcomed an 11 year jail sentence for an island man convicted of a catalogue of sexual crimes.

Vincent Baker, 44, was found guilty of seven charges after a jury trial.

Offences include two counts of rape, three indecent assaults, one sexual assault and one attempted rape.

Some of his offences, which took place between 2003 and 2010, involved young children.

He was recently jailed at Glasgow High Court and placed on the sex offenders registers.

Detective Inspector Scott Macdonald said: “This case came to light following an initial report from one of the victims, which then led to further victims being identified and an 18-month-long inquiry carried out by the local criminal investigation department and uniformed officers based on Orkney.

“The courage shown from the victims in this case should be commended; the perseverance and resilience shown by the victims being required to travel to and from Aberdeen on a number of occasions to give their evidence has undoubtedly assisted in the conviction of Vincent Baker.

“We recognise that victims of crime undergo distressing experiences and we hope that this sentence received by Vincent Baker can give them some comfort and a sense of justice.

“It is hoped that this conviction should give other victims of such sensitive crimes the confidence to come forward safe in the knowledge that their case will be investigated sensitively and thoroughly.”

Area Commander for Orkney, Chief Inspector Les Donaldson said: “As part of Police Scotland, the Orkney Command Area will continue to pursue anyone engaged in the perpetration of sexual offences against vulnerable victims, utilising the support of specialist teams, as we focus on keeping people safe.”
