Paedophile nursery worker, 42, jailed for abusing boy of three in his care

A perverted nusery worker has been jailed for abusing a boy of three in his care.

Twisted James Riley was bought to justice when the young victim told his parents of his ordeal.

The 42-year-old was arrested at the nursery in Coventry and an iPad found by police at his home contained 181 indecent images and videos of young boys.

Another 19 images were discovered on his laptop.

Riley, of Widdrington Road, Radford, was jailed for 12-and-a-half years at Warwick Crown Court on Wednesday after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a child and possessing indecent images of children.

Riley denied he had a specific sexual interest in children instead claiming he viewed this material because he liked to imagine himself as the abused child in the photos.

Jailing him, Recorder Anupama Thompson told him: “You have been convicted by the jury on overwhelming evidence of your behaviour towards a three-year-old boy who had been entrusted into your care.

“Day after day, up and down this country, parents take their children to nurseries, and trust that they are leaving their children with people who they can trust.

“Your behaviour was against everything any parent would expect someone in your position to do.

“Fortunately, he is an articulate little boy who immediately told his parents what had happened, and they were able to take action to ensure nothing similar happened to him again or to other children in your care.

“You had a sexual interest in young children, yet you still went to work every day to a place where you had unfettered access to young children. You were in a position of trust which you abused.”

The sentence was welcomed by Det Con Clare Thorley, of West Midlands Police’s public protection unit.

She said: “At no point did Riley show remorse for what he had done to this child.

“His only concern was himself and the result of being caught with the indecent images of children.

“Anyone who downloads photographs of the abuse of children creates a market for those photographs which leads to other children being abused.

“The bravery of the little boy and his parents for coming forward is to be commended.

“They were incredibly dignified and courageous when giving evidence in what was a very difficult and harrowing time for all.

“It is thanks to this brave little boy and his family that Riley has received the punishment he deserves and he can no longer hurt other children.”

Nursery volunteer, 74, who subjected child to ‘campaign of rape’ jailed for 18 years

A Horley paedophile, who subjected a child to a “campaign of rape”, has been jailed for 18 years.

David Luck, 74, first met the victim – who was under the age of 13 at the time – while he was an assistant to a scout leader.

At his sentencing hearing on Friday (January 12), Judge Jonathan Black described how Luck proceeded to “take over the life” of the child, sexually abusing him on an “almost weekly basis”.

The court heard how Luck groomed his victim over many years, telling him that his behaviour was “normal”.

Addressing the defendant, who appeared at Guildford Crown Court via video link for sentencing, Judge Black said: “You used your role as a scout leader to meet him. You chose him as someone you could abuse because he was vulnerable.”

Luck’s prolific offending was brought to the attention of police in July 2016 when his victim heard he was volunteering at a nursery and was “concerned other children would be abused”.

Judge Black continued: “To his [the victim’s] credit, and showing a great deal of courage, he went to the police and made full disclosure.”

Luck, of Skipton Way, pleaded guilty to five counts of indecent assault, two counts of indecency with a child, four counts of buggery and one count of possession of prohibited images of children on the day his trial was due to begin.

He was sentenced to 18 years in jail and a further year on licence.

Paedophile Erdington teacher blackmailed children to carry out sex acts

A VILE paedophile teacher who taught at two Erdington schools has admitted blackmailing children in to carrying out sex acts after tricking them in to sending naked images.

Jamie Chapman, who taught at Marsh Hill Primary School from 2011 to 2012 and at St Edmund Campion School in 2013, admitted carrying out 31 offences including raping a teenage boy, 21 counts of inciting sexual activity with children and nine counts of taking, making and distributing indecent photos of children.

The 29-year-old befriended the youngsters on social media posing as teenage girls.

He gained their trust by sending naked pictures of young girls which he got from Google and in return the boys would send naked pictures of themselves.

He then threatened many of the boys with further sharing their images across social media – on one occasion he also threatened to circulate the images if the boy didn’t perform a sex act.

A report was made to West Midlands Police on January 13, 2016 that there were images on the internet of a youngster performing a sexual act on a teenager.

Following the report an investigation began and a string of offences were revealed dating back a decade.

Chapman, aged 29, also worked at a private nursery school in the Garretts Green area at the time of his arrest on October 11 last year.

He also worked at Audley Primary School in Stechford between 2006 and 2008 and coached a football team from 2011 to 2013.

Following his arrest, computer equipment was seized from his address.

On the hard drive were 63 individual folders each contained images of a different male.

Solihull nursery worker used Facebook to blackmail ‘petrified’ children into meeting for sex

Sentencing was delayed for a Solihull nursery worker that used social media to blackmail “petrified” children into meeting him for sex abuse after the court was told that Chapman, who appeared from prison via video link, had tried to take his own life in his cell.

Jamie Chapman, 28, posed as two girls on Facebook and persuaded teenage boys to send him compromising photos of themselves.

Still using the fake profiles, he then threatened to send the pictures to their friends and families if they refused to meet him.

Chapman, who pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to 31 charges against 18 teenagers, would then carry out the abuse.

He broke down when he was caught by police, telling a colleague: “I’m a f*ing monster”.**

Police launched a major investigation and found that the Facebook accounts purporting to be the girls belonged to Chapman. Officers went to his family home on October 11 last year while he was working at the nursery, where he was phoned by his mother.

Chapman, of Tamar Drive, Smith’s Wood, appeared via video link at Birmingham Crown Court yesterday, and will be sentenced on Tuesday (May 23).

Matthew Brook, prosecuting, said: “At the police station he was interviewed under caution. He told the police he had set up the fake Facebook accounts out of boredom and in his words, it ‘got a little bit out of hand’. He said he had pretended to be a 16-year-old girl.”

One victim messaged Chapman to say “Please, I beg you to stop this,” evidence retrieved by the police showed.

Another said: “I will probably kill myself, if they (the images and video) get shown around.”

Chapman, still writing as “Emily”, chillingly replied: “I don’t care.”

Many of the victims, all aged in their teens, were pupils at two schools, including a primary school where Chapman had worked as a teaching assistant.

Police have previously said there was no evidence to suggest any inappropriate contact between the worker and children at the nursery where he had been employed.

Chapman previously admitted to one charge of rape, 21 charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, four of distributing indecent images and five of making indecent images.

Sentencing was delayed after the court was told that Chapman, who appeared from prison via video link, had tried to take his own life in his cell.

Emma Nott, representing the defendant, said: “There was an incident involving him this morning in his cell. He tried to take his own life. I can see there are some physical marks to his neck. I was taken aback, as your honour might imagine.”

The 28-year-old’s victims were teenagers when they were assaulted and were pupils from two schools, including one where he worked as a teaching assistant.

Not guilty pleas to a further 13 counts were accepted by the prosecution

Police had previously said there was no evidence to suggest any inappropriate contact between the worker and children at the nursery where he had been employed.

Chapman admitted one charge of rape, 21 charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, four of distributing indecent images of children and five of making indecent images of children

Nursery worker ‘punched 6-year-old girl in face’

A nursery nurse punched a six-year-old child in the face and on the leg.

Marissa Birch was found to be “heavily intoxicated and unable to care for” the girl months after the incident.

The worker was employed at Little Deers Nursery in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, when she repeatedly hit the child at an address in January 2014.

She was struck off by the Scottish Social Services Council after it found she had also been convicted of shouting, swearing and uttering racially aggravated remarks at a Bargain B’s off-licence in Stevenston, North Ayrshire, in May 2015.

The watchdog said Birch battered on a door and committed a breach of the peace in a separate incident in September 2014, which led to a criminal conviction.

In its findings, the council also said the nursery nurse had failed to inform it of her convictions, which included another breach of the peace charge in 2012

Birch struck the child on the arm and leg in the incident in January 2014.

The youngster, referred to as AA in the watchdog’s decision, raised the alarm with her head teacher, which led to a “child protection referral”.

The council said: “There were a number of aggravating factors. The misconduct is serious. It involved wholly unacceptable behaviour towards AA and members of the public.

“The behaviour demonstrated an abuse of the trust of AA. The behaviour demonstrated a pattern of behaviour over a number of years.

“You have shown some insight and regret. There is a risk of harm to members of the public, including AA , if the behaviour is repeated.”

It found it “could not be satisfied that the behaviour would not be repeated” and felt that although none of it occurred at work, it felt it could be repeated due to Birch’s “chaotic lifestyle”.

Mitigating factors in the case included the fact that the nursery worker had “no previous record with the council” and she had “cooperated to an extent” with the watchdog.

Birch had also “expressed some regret” since the incidents occurred.

The council ruled a removal order was the “only appropriate sanction which would safeguard the interests of service users, the public and the reputation of the social services profession”.

It added: “Your behaviour was a serious and deliberate abuse of the trust placed in you by AA and members of the public.”

Nursery boss branded ‘sadistic’ over shocking child cruelty

A “sadistic” nursery boss has admitted a string of shocking cruelty charges against children as young as one.

A judge said Christine Button was guilty of behaviour which “went out in the Dark Ages”.

A court heard the 56-year-old ruled by fear at her nursery, called On The Button and based at Dordon, near Tamworth

She repeatedly targeted a boy aged around four – dragging him around, hitting him up to five times because he was crying and making him sit on the floor alone for more than two hours.

Another child, a girl of four, was made to sit at a table for two hours because she would not eat an apple.

A second girl, aged three, was forced to sit in her wet clothes for up to 45 minutes after she had accidents while potty training.

And a one-year-old girl was made to sit on the floor in Button’s office for more than an-hour-and-a-half, Warwick Crown Court was told.

Police were alerted after two concerned apprentices at the nursery told their college tutor.

Button, a former childminder, denied mistreating the children and only admitted what she had done days before her trial had been due to start.

She pleaded guilty to four child cruelty charges and was handed a 12-month suspended sentence.

Judge Andrew Lockhart QC told her: “You behaved very badly towards children who were entrusted to your care by parents who paid you to look after them in a way they thought would be appropriately loving and caring.

“You demonstrated a cruel streak.

“You acted towards those four children in a sadistic manner, and in a way that was very far removed from any type of appropriate care.

“This type of behaviour is wholly inappropriate.

“It went out with the Dark Ages.

“This was more than one incident, it was sadistic conduct.”

The judge told her not to try to work with children and said the Disclosure and Barring Service may consider a formal ban.

Button, formerly of Everglade Road, Wood End, near Tamworth, was also ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid work, made subject to an overnight curfew for four months and made to pay £600 costs.

Simon Hunka, prosecuting, said the two apprentices grew concerned over Button’s behaviour as they combined working at the nursery with their college studies in 2014.

He said: “They took the brave step, seeing the disparity between what they were seeing and what they were being taught, of telling their tutor, which led to Ofsted and later the police being informed.”

It emerged that Button had created an intimidating atmosphere and there would be consequences for anyone who challenged her, Mr Hunka said.

He told the court that Button would deliberately upset the children – convinced it would cause long-term changes in their behaviour.

When a staff member challenged her, she claimed to be trained in the psychological manipulation of children, and that she was “building them up to be better-behaved in the future”.

But Mr Hunka said her conduct was “simply cruel”.

The four-year-old boy’s mother said her son would hide in the back of the car when they arrived at the nursery, shaking and saying he did not want to go in.

And the mum of the four-year-old girl became concerned when she heard her daughter say: “Go to my office. You’re not having any lunch” as she played at home.

Paul Fleming, defending, said the matter had serious financial implications for Button and her husband.

She had to pay a penalty for ending her lease on the nursery premises early, she and her family lost their home and had relocated to Devon.
