Paedophile scout leader took schoolgirl, 14, to hotels for sex and got her pregnant

A scout leader got a 14-year-old schoolgirl pregnant after grooming her with booze on hotel dates.

Richard Crook, 42, of Vine Road, Southampton was volunteering with a scout group at the time when he started to groom a young girl who he planned to have a baby with, Southampton Crown Court heard.

The paedophile whose job is to fit CCTV security systems, was caught on camera at a Hampshire service station with his victim

Only when the schoolgirl told her teacher that she was five weeks pregnant, was the relationship stopped.

Prosecution barrister, Gary Rutter said that Crook knew his victim was 14-years-old and would have seen her wearing her school uniform when he preyed on her between July and December last year.

Mr Rutter told the court: “The defendant would take her to hotels for the purpose of sex.”

Initial suspicions of Crook’s behaviour led to his arrest only for him to be released on bail and “the sexual relationship resumed”.

According to Mr Rutter, CCTV footage at Sutton Scotney services on the A34, pictured Crook and his victim before his second arrest when his victim revealed her pregnancy to a teacher.

Crook pleaded guilty to four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child which took place between July and December last year, and was jailed for 14 years, to be released on licence.

Judge Christopher Parker QC said there had been an element of grooming and agreed with a report that concluded that Crook is a continued danger to young girls from the age of 13 and up.

He will have to register as a sex offender for life.

Gosport ex-Royal Navy commander made an MBE by the Queen spared jail after paedophile hunter sting

Paedophile hunters posing as a 14-year-old boy on a gay hookup app snared a former naval officer honoured with an MBE from the Queen.

Former Lieutenant Commander Graham Trewhella, who was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours, thought he was meeting the boy when he set out into the night in Gosport after arranging the meeting on Grindr.

But when he arrived to meet a boy named George he was stunned to find a man from paedophile hunter group Trap who had been posing as the decoy child.

Police were called and arrested 62-year-old Trewhella, of Grove Road in Gosport, later searching his Dell computer and finding nearly 1,100 indecent images of children.

In a video posted by Trap the man posing as George said: ‘You’ve thrown away your life.’

Trewhella looks shocked and can barely answer in the video posted to social media but said: ‘I don’t do anything outside, I wasn’t going to do anything.’

Later speaking to probation the dad-of-three said: ‘‘What I’ve done was absolutely wrong, it’s unbelievably irresponsible.

‘When I look at what I’ve done now it horrifies me.’

Portsmouth Crown Court heard shamed Trewhella had actually been messaging the group known as Trap.

In one message on the app, where Trewhella used photos of himself, the disgraced naval officer told the fake boy he wanted ‘maybe (sex) later’.

‘The person posing as George made it plain that he was only 14 and asked whether the defendant would be happy with that and he said that he was,’ prosecutor Nicholas Hall said.

‘This went on for certainly over two days.’

Mr Hall said following the arrest in October 28, 2017, police found 329 indecent images of children rated at category A, the most severe.

There were 255 at B and 512 at rated in category C. Analysis found his searches for perverted images dated back to 2015.

The judge, Recorder Simon Levene, suspended the 17-month jail sentence for two years as the risk of reoffending would be ‘greatly reduced by programmes which the probation service have to offer’.

Addressing Trewhella, he said: ‘You are deeply ashamed and very, very embarrassed- not just at being caught but at what now, you can take a step back, what you realise you’ve been up to over the last few years.

‘I accept that this is a case where I can suspend the sentence because I think that you fall into that category of offender who can be helped.’

Jailing him would do ‘nothing towards his rehabilitation’ and there was a risk that sex criminals in prison could make him a worse offender, the judge said.

Eastleigh man jailed seven years for alleyway rape

A man has been jailed for seven years for raping a woman in an alleyway.

David Gordon Howse, 33, of The Quadrangle in Eastleigh, Hampshire, pleaded guilty at Southampton Crown Court to attacking the 24-year-old.

On the night of 8 January 2019 he followed her into an alley in Whyteways, Eastleigh, where the rape took place.

Det Insp Gareth Jones of Hampshire Constabulary called it a “truly harrowing crime”.

Police said the woman was walking in Beaulieu Road and cut through an alleyway into a car park between Beaulieu Road and Selbourne Drive.

She was then approached by Howse, who followed her into the alleyway in Whyteways.

He was identified as the offender and arrested in December 2019, before being charged the following July, police said.

Following the sentencing, Det Insp Jones said it had been a “difficult and complex investigation”.

He said Howse had attacked a “vulnerable woman late at night, in a place where she should feel safe to walk home without fear of being sexually attacked”.

He added: “I would like to pay tribute to the victim for the courage that she has shown throughout the investigation; we understand it is not always easy for victims to have to relive an already terrifying ordeal.

“I would also like to say thank you to the selfless woman who came to the victim’s aid after she sensed something was wrong and intervened.”

He said he hoped the sentence went “someway to giving the woman closure and reassures her, and the communities in Hampshire, that justice has been served”.

Howse has also been ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.
