Woman admits sex with under-age boy

A woman from Wolverhampton who got pregnant after having sex with a 14-year-old boy has been spared an immediate prison sentence.

Despite seeing the teenager in his school uniform and giving him bus fare to school, Saira Kosier initially told police that she believed he was of age. The 22-year-old defendant was branded foolish by a judge at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

The pair had sex twice last year and Kosier fell pregnant. Their actions came to light after Kosier bought a pregnancy test with a friend who later informed the teenager’s mother.

Kosier, who miscarried five months ago, was arrested on July 28 last year and told police she thought the boy was over 16.

Julian Elcock, prosecuting, said: “She was clearly aware of his age. She heard someone say his date of birth, he was in his school uniform and she had given him bus fare to school.

“Around that time, he celebrated his 14th birthday and she was aware of that.”

Kosier sent the victim text messages asking him to be her boyfriend, and when he replied saying he was too young, she said: “age doesn’t matter”.

Kosier admitted two char-ges of engaging in sexual activity with a child and Judge Amjad Nawaz sentenced her to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years. She was also given a two-year supervision order and ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.

Judge Nawaz told Kosier: “You were aware of the age of this child. There was a friendship between you and him and it was clear that he was not unwilling. But you, being older and wiser, ought to have known better. You displayed a degree of immaturity and foolishness.”

Edward Soulsby, defending, applied for a court order preventing the publication of Kosier’s address.

He said that Kosier had a traumatic upbringing and was looking for comfort, and the boy looked and acted mature for his age.
