Pontypool paedophile punished

A paedophile was branded a “weak and sad man” by a judge after he was caught downloading “horrible” child sex abuse films and pictures.

Liam Morris, 27, of Penylan Road, Varteg, Pontypool, had trawled the internet for indecent images of girls as young as five.

Marian Lewis, prosecuting, said Gwent Police officers raided the defendant’s home on September 15, 2020.

Morris told them he had illegal material stored on his mobile phone, Cardiff Crown Court was told.

He was found with 16 movies and 28 still of child abuse images at category A, B and C.

Morris pleaded guilty to three counts of possession of indecent images of children.

Miss Lewis said the defendant was a man of previous good character with no convictions recorded against him.

Hilary Roberts, representing Morris, said in mitigation: “He was frank with the police when he was arrested and he pleaded guilty at the first opportunity.

“This is a defendant with no previous convictions whatsoever.

“He knows his behaviour is harmful and he describes it as shameful.

“The defendant realises he must not do this.

“He was under the influence of drink and drugs and has done his best to address that.”

The court was told Morris had been looking at mainly girls who were aged between five and 14.

After his arrest, he said to the police: “It’s a stupid mistake.”

The judge, Recorder Richard Booth QC, told Morris: “These were described as disturbing images.

“Some of the victims were as young as five or six.

“You have expressed some shame and remorse. You live with your mother and two border collies.”

Recorder Booth added: “You are a weak and rather sad man and these are horrible offences.”

Morris was sentenced to a three-year community order.

The defendant must attend 30 sessions of a sex offender programme and complete a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

He must carry out 150 hours of unpaid work in the community and pay a £95 victim surcharge.

Morris must register as a sex offender for 10 years and was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order until 2031.

Pervert dad, 40, withdrew from family in lockdown to chat online with underage girls

A dad who shut himself away from his family during lockdown searched online to find 13-year-old girls to have explicit chats with.

Unfortunately for father-of-three Matthew Humphry, 40, one of the children he was enjoying sexual conversations with was actually an undercover police officer.

Leicestershire Police raided his house and seized his computer, where they discovered evidence of other girls he had communicated with, including one 13-year-old girl who sent him a topless photo.

The prosecutor, Nicola Moore, told the court how Humphry had contacted “Emily” in May last year and the girl – really a police officer – told him she was only 13.

Ms Moore said: “The chat developed over six or so weeks. He was asking if she had pubic hair and saying she would look fantastic in a bikini. He talked about putting sun tan lotion on her.

“He suggested they meet up and said if she was naughty he would smack her bottom.

“He said she would enjoy having sex with him as he would be gentle.”

After his arrest, Humphry was charged with attempted to engaging in sexual communication with a child and inciting sexual activity. He pleaded guilty to both charges.

Mr Newcombe said his client, who now lives in Chester Close, Pontypool, Wales, now realised how wrong his behaviour was and had been receiving counselling.

He said: “Despite everything that has happened to him, he does appear determined to get to the root of these issues.”

Recorder William Harbage QC, sentencing, told Humphry: “What was going on was clearly for your sexual gratification and demonstrated a sexual interest in teenager girls or, more worryingly, underage girls.

“It is obviously very wrong and you, belatedly, have admitted that

“People who offend in this way against real 13-year-old girls go straight to prison.”

He sentenced Humphry to four-months, suspended for two years.

He also ordered him to take part in 30 days of probation programmes and sign the sex offenders register for the next seven years.

Cwmbran paedophile jailed for more than 20 years

A paedophile who preyed on boys and subjected them to “horrific sexual abuse” has been jailed for more than 20 years.

Matthew Pearce was locked up after admitting a catalogue of historical and recent offences against children.

The 40-year-old, of Pontnewydd Walk, Cwmbran, pleaded guilty to 21 offences, including four counts of rape and four counts of indecent assault.

His appalling crimes took place between 1996 and 2019, prosecutor Roger Griffiths said.

The defendant also admitted possession of indecent images of children.

Judge Nicola Jones jailed the defendant for 20 years and seven months.

The sentence is made up of a prison term of 13 years and seven months with an extended licence period of seven years.

Pearce will have to register as a sex offender for life.

Cwmbran paedophile created bogus online accounts

A “high-risk” paedophile used images of female models as his profile picture to “make himself more attractive” when creating a false identity online, a court has heard.

Steffan Davis’ use of the internet was restricted after he was convicted of downloading indecent images of children.

By creating fake accounts on messaging app Kik, the 30-year-old from Cwmbran was in breach of a 10-year-old sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) imposed in 2017.

Nuhu Gobir, prosecuting, said: “The defendant portrayed himself as an attractive female to speak to people online.

“They were random people and people from all over the world.

“He would use a picture of a model or Instagram image to make himself more attractive.”

Cardiff Crown Court heard how Davis used his bogus accounts to contact women and not children.

The defendant, of Hogarth Close, Llantarnam, pleaded guilty to being in breach of a SHPO and sex offender notification requirements.

Mr Gobir said Davis, who was appearing in court via video link from prison, had served a previous jail sentence.

The defendant also had a prior conviction for possessing extreme pornography and breaching a SHPO.

The court was told how his pre-sentence report had assessed him as posing “a high risk of causing serious harm to children”.

Judge Jeremy Jenkins said he was prepared to give Davis another opportunity at being rehabilitated.

He jailed him for 28 weeks, suspended for two years.

‘Vile’ Pontypool paedophile jailed for 1990s attacks

A “vile paedophile who destroyed his victim’s life” after preying on him is finally behind bars.

Michael Beddis, 55, formerly of Pontypool, would ply his victim with alcohol before sexually abusing him during the 1990s.

Marian Lewis, prosecuting, told how the defendant had groomed the boy for sex.

She added that Beddis had also carried out another later sex attack on the teenager when the complainant was aged 18.

Miss Lewis read out a moving impact statement written by the victim which said of the defendant: “His actions have changed me as a person.

“I will never be able to forgive or forget what he did.

“He has stolen my childhood. He is a vile man who preyed on me. He is very clever and he manipulated me.

“I suffered pain and humiliation after what Michael Beddis did to me all those years ago.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to the historical offences on the day of his trial.

Beddis, of Daisy Street, Canton, Cardiff, admitted three counts of indecent assault committed between 1993 and 1999.

Two of the attacks took place when the victim was aged between 14 and 15.

Miss Lewis told the court Beddis was jailed for three years in 2003 for indecent assault and gross indecency with a child.

The judge, Recorder Paul Lewis QC, told Beddis: “You tried to ensure your victim’s silence and you told him it was a secret between you.

“The psychological impact on your victim has been grave indeed.

“He said he was too frightened to tell anyone.

“There was grooming by you. You gave him drink in order to perpetrate your abuse.”

Beddis was jailed for six years.

He was already on the sex offenders register for life following his 2003 conviction.
