Bexhill man and woman sentenced following sex offences

An army cadet leader sexually abused a girl in his troop after a Remembrance Sunday event marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Lieutenant Dennis Bowie groomed the girl while he was a detachment commander of the army cadets in Bexhill.

The married 49-year-old was in cahoots with Sergeant Alice McElhinney, 33, where they groomed the cadets and shared their perverted fantasies with one another.

At Lewes Crown Court it was revealed Bowie had groped and kissed a 14-year-old girl.

The victim, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, said the abuse left her self-harming.

In a statement she said: “I was used and felt trapped, I didn’t see any way of getting out of it.”

Bowie admitted an offence of sexual communication with a child, two offences of sexual activity with a child, and also three offences of making indecent images of children.

He was sentenced to five years and two months in prison.

McElhinney admitted one offence of sexual communication with a child, and two offences of sexual activity with a child. She was sentenced to a total of three years and nine months imprisonment.

Her Honour Judge Janet Waddicor described the offending as a massive breach of trust.

The judge said: “It’s an abuse of trust by her family and the trust placed in them by the cadets.

“It was almost as if they were playthings.”

Amy Packham, prosecuting, told the court how Bowie and McElhinney shared hundreds of text messages about their desires to sexually abuse cadets.

In one message, Bowie told McElhinney he was disappointed with his attempts to abuse the girl after buying alcohol for cadets after the Remembrance Day service.

“Hey, I paid £75 and you got the snog. Lol,” Bowie sent in a text to McElhinney.

They had both been volunteers with the army cadets in Bexhill for years, Ms Packham said.

“There was discussion about what they were doing or trying to do with the young cadets on their phones,” Ms Packham said.

The messages showed the relationship between defendants was open and they were relaxed about the comments they were making to each other.

“They trust each other with what would be seen as highly controversial views.

“Both were interested in the cadets sexually and suggested relations with previous cadets,” Ms Packham said.

Four young females had been identified as possible victims after McElhinney’s phone was seized by police.

McElhinney tried to claim the messages were just “banter”.

The victim said: “I felt like my life would fall apart. I felt like nothing. I felt like a toy. It took me a long time to realise it wasn’t my fault.”

Bowie, of Orchard Road, Bexhill, and McElhinney, of Cornwall Road, Bexhill, are both now behind bars.

They will both be registered sex offenders for life, and Sexual Harm Prevention Orders were issued to both which will restrict their access to children.

Worthing man pleads guilty to sexual offences against family dogs and children

A depraved pervert from Sussex has admitted multiple sexual offences against his family dogs and making hundreds of indecent images of children.

Evan McClelland, 21, of Lyndhurst Road in Worthing, pleaded guilty to seven charges involving sexual offences against two dogs and making hundreds of indecent images of children and animals.

At Worthing Magistrates’ Court, the court heard that on or before October 7, 2020, McClelland made 525 indecent images of children at an address in Dolphin Road, Shoreham.

They included 184 of the most serious Category A images showing the rape or torture of young children

On or before the same date, McClelland also possessed 198 prohibited images of children and 349 ‘extreme’ sexual images involving a person commiting sexual acts on or with a live animal.

At the same address, on January 1, 2016, McClelland was also charged with two counts of sexual offences against his family dogs, DeeDee and Digit, which involved sexual acts and/or sexual intercourse

Speaking for the prosecution, Melanie Wotton recommended magistrates did not have the sentencing powers to suitably punish the number and seriousness of the charges.

David Worcester, chairman of the bench, said: “We’ve heard that there are seven quite serious charges that you have pleaded guilty to.

“The offences are so serious that they need greater punishment than we in the magistrates’ court can give.

“Both the Crown Prosecution Service and your defence lawyer see the seriousness as being an issue for this court. We are of the view that the crown court is the most suitable location for these charges to be sentenced.”

McClelland was released on unconditional bail and ordered to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Wednesday, June 16 for sentencing.

Ban for former Westbourne House School teacher Gareth Rees

A former teacher who looked at a “paedophile handbook” has been banned from the classroom.

Gareth Rees, 32, who worked at a prestigious private school, was caught with indecent images on his phone.

Mr Rees, who taught children of primary school age at Westbourne House, also took part in sick online chats.

The allegations relate to his internet activity and not children at the school, where parents pay up to £19,000-a-year.

Mr Rees, who has since resigned, faced a disciplinary hearing where he was accused of having a sexual interest in children.

Mr Rees denied a string of allegations, dating from October 2016 to February 2017, but did not attend the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) hearing.

He was accused of using terms such as “young nudist”, “pederasty” and “pre-teen” during online searches.

He was also accused of taking part in a discussion on social media relating to children engaging in sexual activity.

A social media exchange – in which he said “that’s so naughty but I’m turned on by it…is that wrong?” – appeared to relate to children engaged in sexual activity, the TRA said.

Mr Rees told police that he opened the “paedophile handbook” but closed it after two minutes, described the contents as “horrible” and stating he did not download it.

Furthermore, two images found on his phone were classed as Category A and five classed as Category B, according to a statement from an officer.

Mr Rees said he remembered seeing “age questionable” material on an adult chat site he was using.

He also remembered seeing images on his phone downloaded unintentionally and deleted them straight away.

He left his position in March 2017 – the same month he was arrested.

However, Mr Rees was found not guilty at a criminal trial in December of that year.

After considering all the evidence, the TRA panel found the allegation that he had a sexual interest in children to be proven.

Mr Rees was given an indefinite ban from teaching.

In a report, the panel said: “Mr Rees has demonstrated no insight or remorse having denied the allegations in their entirety.

“His failure to report the online material he had seen failed to recognise that there was a victim whose welfare needed to be safeguarded.

“The panel was, therefore, concerned at the risk of repetition given the behaviours that have been exhibited by Mr Rees.”

April 2021

Paedophile Doctor broke sexual harm prevention order

A “selfish” paedophile was caught giving online tutoring lessons to GCSE pupils in breach of a court order.

Dr Darren Thompson, from East Wittering, was ordered not to have contact with people under the age of 18 after being convicted for possessing indecent images of children.

He was banned from using computer equipment or phones without monitoring software.

But he was found giving tutorials to youngsters in breach of the order.

When police raided his home, they also found Thompson had hidden a mobile phone hidden in a toilet at his home.

He had also hidden another phone which was taped under a chair in his bedroom.

At Lewes Crown Court the 50-year-old admitted breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Beverley Cherrill, prosecuting, said the former academic had broken the rules in December last year.

He was in breach of orders imposed when he was given a suspended sentence for possession of indecent images in 2018, the court heard.

Ms Cherrill said there were screengrabs showing him giving tutorials to youngsters, which he was not allowed to do.

But the court heard that it was not alleged anything indecent took place on the Zoom meetings, as parents of the young people were also present.

Jason Halsey, defending, said Thompson was trying to “live a normal life” and therefore ignored the concerns the courts had about his previous conduct.

“There is no possible justification or excuses,” Mr Halsey said, adding that Thompson simply wanted to have a smart phone available to him.

His Honour Judge Mark Van Der Zwart said the sex offender could be spared a prison sentence because he had previously completed all the requirements of a suspended sentence.

Thompson, of Shawside Walk, East Wittering, was ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and 30 rehabilitation sessions as part of a new suspended prison sentence.
