‘Unreformed paedophile,’ and convicted rapist, exposed himself to children in Pembroke Dock

An already convicted child rapist who was released early from prison exposed himself to primary school children on successive days

Alan Melville, aged 61, had been released early from a 12-year sentence, imposed in 2012 for the rape of a child.

In September this year, a man and two young sisters saw him engage in a sex act in the kitchen of his flat in Bush Street, Pembroke Dock.

Melville today admitted two offences of indecent exposure and was jailed for a total of 15 months.

But, Swansea crown court heard he had already been recalled to prison to continue serving the original sentence, and will stay in jail beyond the new sentence.

Ian Wright, prosecuting, said on September 20 a father was driving his daughter home from school when she told him she had seen a naked man standing in the kitchen window of his home.

The following day he took a second daughter to school and left her in his van while he called into a newsagent. When he returned, he found her in tears; she told him she had seen a naked man engaged in a sex act.

The father telephoned the police.

When officers arrived they were approached by a second man who complained that he had seen Melville naked and exposing himself the previous day.

Mr Wright said Melville was arrested and police discovered he had taken a photograph of himself naked below the waist only 30 minutes before they arrived.

Judge Paul Thomas, the same judge who jailed Melville in 2012, described him as an “unreformed, unrepentant sexual offender and paedophile who continues to be a risk.”

Judge Thomas said he did not know when Melville would be released as that was not up to him, but he said he hoped the authorities would take the view that he was nowhere near ready.

Judge Thomas also explained in open court to the parents of the girls that his sentencing powers were limited to the maximum available for offences of exposure.

Melville is already registered with the police as a sex offender.

Judge Thomas issued a sexual harm prevention order, restricting Melville’s activities after his eventual release.

Paedophile had 220 child abuse images

A CONVICTED paedophile was caught downloading indecent images of children on a computer he had bought just hours before, a judge heard today, November 9.

Paul Baker, aged 56, had been accessing the images as police officers approached his home in Wavell Crescent, Pembroke Dock.

Swansea crown court heard that Baker was already the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for previous offending of a similar nature.

Craig Jones, prosecuting, said under a condition of the order police made routine visits to his home.

Officers called on August 10 and Baker offered them a Samsung mobile and a Lenova computer to inspect.

But an examination of a router showed there was a third device in the house, and officers found a new HP laptop hidden under his bed.

Baker confessed he had been accessing websites with indecent images of children that very morning, and told them they would find “four or five films”.

Mr Jones said the laptop had on it 220 indecent images of children, including 14 images and five films within the most serious category A.

They depicted full sex acts being performed on children as young as two or three, he added.

Mr Jones said that, by chance, Baker had avoided a charge of breaching the SHPO. That required him to tell the police about any device he obtained that could access the internet within 72 hours, but the time limit had not expired before officers found the laptop.

Mr Jones said that while police were at his home, officers saw him swallowing white tablets, and he told them he wanted to overdose and kill himself.

They prevented him from taking any more.

Judge Paul Thomas told Baker: “You don’t learn your lessons. Once again you have been caught with indecent images of children on your computer. These are awful offences.”

Baker was jailed for 12 months.

Judge Thomas issued a fresh SHPO, this one obliging Baker to inform the police before he bought a computer and not afterwards.

Haverfordwest man declared a danger to young girls

A judge today (Monday) described a Haverfordwest man as a risk to young girls after he admitted a string of sex offences.

Callum Keith Roberts, aged 19, attended a plea and trial preparation hearing before Judge Paul Thomas at Swansea crown court.

But a trial will not be necessary after he admitted sexual intercourse and other sexual offences involving two 14-year -old girls.

Roberts, of Hawthorn Rise, also admitted taking indecent photographs of one of the girls.

He further admitted trying to avoid prosecution by making a false complaint to police that the father of one of the girls had assaulted him.

Roberts, who is being held in custody, will be sentenced after a probation officer has prepared a report into his background.

Man gave teen drugs before sexual assault

A Milford Haven man who gave cannabis to a 14 year old girl before sexually assaulting her was jailed yesterday for two years.

John Paul Hughes, aged 47, had denied both sexual assault and supplying a controlled drug but he was convicted after a trial at Swansea crown court.

Judge Christopher Morton jailed Hughes for 12 months for the sex offence and an additional 12 months for supplying cannabis.

Mark Spackman, prosecuting, said Hughes, of Edward Street, Milford Haven, had touched the girl’s breasts under her clothing.

Judge Morton said Hughes had supplied the cannabis for one of two reasons, either as a reward for allowing Hughes to fondle her sexually or as a threat that if she told anyone about the touching he would tell about her smoking cannabis.

Judge Morton said he accepted that no force had been used.

Hughes was also banned from ever working with children and ordered to register with the police as a sex offender for the next ten years.
