RAF man tried to blame wife after he killed baby daughter

An RAF technician who shook his baby daughter to death then blamed his wife for the killing was jailed for six years and eight months today.

Gareth Harries, 25, attacked eight-month-old Chloe when she would not stop crying.

He initially blamed his wife Hayley for their baby’s death, but admitted the culpable homicide of the infant during his trial at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The incident took place in November 2006 at the home he shared with his wife in Lossiemouth, where Harries was based.

Jailing Harries, Judge Lady Dorrian said today it was clear he must have used ‘significant force’.

She told him: ‘You used such force on a helpless baby. The consequences of that will be with you for the rest of your life.

‘I recognise that by pleading you have spared the need for your wife to give evidence, which would clearly have been traumatic for her.

‘However, it reflects very sadly on you that you waited until this stage to do so and even worse that you previously maintained a defence of incrimination, blaming your wife for the death of her own child, which must have made the traumatic effect of the child’s death even worse for her.’

Lady Dorrian said she took into account that Harries had expressed ‘deep and genuine remorse’ for his actions and also that he had not intended to harm his daughter.

But she added there was ‘no alternative’ but to impose a custodial sentence.

Harries, from Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, was originally charged with murdering Chloe. But he later admitted a lesser charge of culpable homicide, and killing his daughter by repeatedly shaking her.

Businessman’s ‘paedophile tendencies’ exposed by undercover police operation

A seemingly respectable businessman spent months engaged in disgusting online chat with what he believed to be a schoolboy.

David Richard Badham repeatedly told the boy in very graphic terms he wanted sex with him and asked him to travel to Carmarthen so they could meet and “play” in the back of his van.

But the 52-year-old was actually communicating with a police officer who was part of an operation designed to catch paedophiles.

Swansea Crown Court heard Badham’s online activities have cost him his good name, “his business, and his family”. Stephen Rees, prosecuting, said Badham was caught in an undercover operation run by police in Northern Ireland.

Between January 2019 and June 2019 the defendant engaged in highly sexualised conversations with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old boy.

The court heard Badham sent a series of graphic messages describing what he wanted to do to the boy and what sex acts he wanted the boy to perform on him.

Despite the contact telling him he was aged just 14 the defendant requested photographs of his genitals and sent him videos of a man, believed to be the defendant himself, performing a sex act.

In one of the June messages Badham told the boy he wanted him catch a train to Carmarthen so the pair could “play” in the back of his Volkswagen van, telling the young teen to wear shorts but no underwear. Following these exchanges Badham was arrested on July 16 last year.

Badham, of Mount Pleasant Way, Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempting to cause a child to watch sexual activity for the purposes of sexual gratification and four counts of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.

Giving the defendant a one-third discount for his guilty pleas the judge sentenced him to a total of 16 months in prison suspended for two years and ordered him to complete the Horizon sex offenders programme, a rehabilitation course, and 150 hours of unpaid work.

Badham will be a registered sex offender for the next 10 years and was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order for the same length of time.
