Three year delay for Kettering man who downloaded 400 indecent images of children to face court

An ongoing “massive backlog” for Northamptonshire’s paedophile investigation unit meant a Kettering man was only seen in court yesterday more than three years after his arrest.

Paul Knight was arrested from his former home in Geddington, Kettering, following an investigation by police.

Across the 55-year-old’s devices, officers found 395 indecent images of children, including 66 classed as “category A” – the most serious rating available.

However, Northampton Crown Court heard yesterday (June 7) how Knight was arrested in December 2017 – meaning it had taken three and half years for the offending to be dealt with in court.

Prosecutor Mr Andrew Peet told the judge that the severe delay was in part because Northamptonshire Police is facing “a massive backlog” in terms of electronic devices that need examining.

It comes after an inspection of the force in April this year noted its Paedophile Online Investigation team (POLIT) was facing a 70 per cent increase in demand over the 12 months since the start the Covid-19 pandemic, on top of waiting cases.

In fact, the report said officers were reportedly handling an average workload of 31 cases – the highest of any investigative team in the force.

Northamptonshire Police has been contacted for a comment.

Knight, now of Hitchin Street, Biggleswade, was also sentenced in 2005 for possessing indecent images of children, where he was handed a fine.

The images he was caught with in 2017 were reportedly included downloads dated from 2007.

A report from the probation service stated that while Knight showed “remorse” for his offending, he continues to deny that he has a sexual attraction to children.

His Honour Judge Rupert Mayo told him in sentencing: “Just in case you’re not aware Mr Knight, nobody treats the images in these cases as victimless crimes.

“The children in those images are substantially abused, and they bare the scars throughout their later lives.”

Knight was handed a 16-month prison sentence suspended for two years. He was committed to complete 50 days of the “Horizons” paedophile reform and rehabilitation programme.

Arrest warrant issued for Portuguese lodger who amassed over 9,500 indecent images of children while in Northampton

An arrest warrant has been issued for a Portuguese man who amassed over 9,500 indecent images of children while he was a lodger in Northampton.

Bruno Lopes, of Gaveto Da Rua in Apulia, returned home to Portugal following his arrest in 2017 after police traced the illegal online activity to an address in Gibson Lane.

But after wrongfully arresting the homeowner at first, officers were then informed the house had a lodger.

When Lopes arrived home, he confessed immediately and told police they would find what they were looking for on his computer.

Across four hard drives, investigators found at least 9,554 images and videos of the abusive material. Of those, 241 were classed as “category A”, the most serious classification under UK law.

Northampton Crown Court heard on Thursday (May 20) how Lopes’ computer also housed images of extreme violence and terrorism.

The 42-year-old lodger later told a probation team he had become “lonely and isolated” during his time in Northampton and he fell down a rabbit hole of depraved internet forums.

However, Lopes did not attend his sentencing despite a summons to court.

Now, following a sentence of eight months in jail in his absence, an arrest warrant has been issued for him to be taken to prison in Portugal.

Her Honour Judge Rebecca Crane said: “I see no grounds to suspend this sentence. There is no realistic prospect of rehabilitation and no strong personal mitigation.

“Mr Lopes denies an sexual interest in children. I reject this and find it not credible.”

Northampton paedophile jailed after sending sexually inappropriate messages to numerous girls online

A Northampton paedophile who sent sexually inappropriate messages to numerous girls online was jailed for 30 months yesterday (Thursday, May 13).

Northampton Crown Court heard David Brown sent the explicit texts to children aged under 16 for around seven months in 2018, including asking for naked pictures.

The 64-year-old, of Northwood Road, also had seven indecent images of children on his phone, which police discovered after arresting him in August of that year.

Sentencing him, His Honour Judge David Herbert QC said: “These were persistent, determined and repeated attempts to incite underage young girls to send you images of their naked genitalia.

“You say that you are not interested in young girls but I do not accept that as that is why you committed these offences and that’s why you were in possession of the indecent images and why you repeated your offending.”

Brown pleaded guilty to five counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, five counts of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and two counts of making indecent photographs of a child at the same court in March.

After being arrested, analysis of Brown’s phone found several conversations on a social media platform with girls who said they were under 16.

In all of them, the defendant had asked for photos of them naked as well as asking them inappropriate questions about their sexual history.

Brown’s messages included various sexual suggestions and questions such as: “Are you up for naughty fun?”

One child, who said she was 10, called Brown a pervert and said she was scared and would call the emergency services but he persisted in asking for nude pictures, saying he was 16.

Police were unable to speak to any of the users so their ages could not be confirmed but their profiles and messages suggested to Brown that they were under 16, the judge said.

The indecent photos, described as a ‘relatively small’ number by the prosecution, of young girls were also found on his mobile phone.

As well as the custodial sentence, Brown was also given a 10-year sexual harm prevention order which restricts his access to the internet.

Corby paedophile left girl a nervous wreck

A girl was left fearing men and struggling to sleep because of a Corby paedophile’s sickening actions.

Barrie Pickering sent her vile images and sexually touched her, asking her to let him do it as it would just be between them.

He even bought her expensive jewellery – but the 29-year-old was finally caught when the victim told an adult what he had done.

On Tuesday (May 11) he was given a community order and put on the register for sex offenders.

Northampton Crown Court heard Pickering, of Bideford Square, sent his victim lewd images of himself on Snapchat in December 2018.

Prosecuting, Jonathan Eley said that weeks later Pickering tried to kiss her before inappropriately touching her in January 2019.

Pickering told her: “Let me do it, it will be just between you and me.”

The incidents left her disturbed, but in June 2019 he sexually touched her again. He also bought her jewellery, which he claimed was to cheer her up.

When the victim revealed what had happened to an adult Pickering – who the court heard had previously been warned by police over his contact with a child – was arrested.

Mr Eley said: “He denied any sexual touching. He accepted the images were his and claimed he was stupid for sending them to her.

The paedophile, who wore a grey hoody with a face mask under his nose in the dock, later admitted sexual communication with a child, sexually touching a child and attempting to sexually touch a child.

The court heard the victim suffers with anxiety, depression and panic attacks and struggles to sleep because of his actions.

Her Honour Judge Rebecca Crane said: “It means she now has a fear of men.”

Judge Crane said she was concerned that Pickering had shown a lack of remorse because he had denied the offences in a probation report.

Judge Crane sentenced Pickering to a 36-month community order and told him he would have to take part in the Horizon programme for sex offenders.

He will be on the register for sex offenders for five years, subject to a five-year sexual harm prevention order and banned from working with children and vulnerable adults.

Elderly Northampton sex offender spared jail

A 79-year-old sex offender who assaulted a number of females has been spared jail because of his ill health.

Angelo Dechiara, of Kettering Road, committed sexually inappropriate acts against a number of females in the 2010s.

But at his sentencing on April 30, a judge ruled he could be dealt with without going to prison because of his deteriorating health.

Recorder Mr Graham Huston told the 79-year-old: “The effects of these offences are felt still by the women involved.

“I am sure in your case that their is something going on in relation to your mental health and there are a number of recent medical issues which suggest that is the case.

“Since the commital of this offence you have suffered a serious period of ill health… You were once a robust and invigorated man. You are now not the man you were then.”

As a result, the judge handed Dechiara an 100-month community order and 10 days of rehabilitation requirement.

At the hearing at Leicester Crown Court, the 79-year-old was also ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs. He has been made to sign the sex offenders’ register.
