Sex assault victim bombarded with texts and calls by pervert who also filmed through her window

A sex offender out on bail after assaulting a woman sent her 100 texts, made 30 phone calls and filmed inside her home through her window.

Wayne Lewis, 48, already had convictions for attempted rape and sexual assault when he began his latest offending.

The registered sex offender assaulted a woman and she reported him to the police. He was arrested and questioned by detectives before being let out on bail while the investigation continued.

But despite the fact the police were already investigating him, he went to the woman’s house and used a tablet computer to film through a window of her home.

In a period of six days he sent 100 messages to the victim and made more than 30 phone calls during a period of just two days.

During another two-week period, about a month later, he made another 200 calls at least, while also sending continuous messages to the victim on social media.

Those offences were reported to the police and when he was questioned about his latest behaviour he denied it all.

However, analysis of his phone and other evidence led to him later pleading guilty to both sexual assault and controlling or coercive behaviour.

Lewis, of Perth Avenue, New Parks, Leicester, appeared at Leicester Crown Court yesterday for sentencing and was given an extended sentence due to his previous offending.

He will stay in prison for at least five years and two months. After that he can expect to be released and remain on licence for a further four years and 10 months.

Ex-teacher convicted of molesting schoolboys

A former English teacher at a Gloucester secondary school has been convicted of six offences of molesting two boy pupils in the 1980s and is to be sentenced in April

George Haynes, 69, of Church Lane, Northampton, had pleaded not guilty at Gloucester Crown Court to a total of 11 charges – ten relating to a boy at the Gloucester school between 1980-1984 and one to a boy at a school in Leicester where Haynes later worked in 1985/86.

At the end of a trial held at the ‘Nightingale’ court in Cirencester this week the jury found Haynes guilty of five indecent assaults on the Gloucester boy but could not agree on five other charges concerning him – two of indecent assault and three of gross indecency – and was discharged from returning verdicts on them.

Haynes was also convicted of the one charge against him of indecently assaulting the Leicester boy.

The names of the two schools involved cannot be reported by court order.

Judge Ian Lawrie QC bailed Haynes until sentencing on April 9 so that a pre-sentence report can be prepared.

Prosecutor Don Tait had told the jury of nine men and three women at the start of the trial that the allegations all came to light when a man contacted Gloucester Police in April 2016 alleging he had been assaulted by his English teacher during the 1980s.

“School records were subsequently obtained and they show that the complainant was at the Gloucester school between September 1980 and July 1987,” said Mr Tait.

The jury were told that the school records were checked and it was found that Mr Haynes taught at the Gloucester school between September 1977 and August 1985.

As part of the enquiry, it was discovered that Leicestershire Police had investigated Mr Haynes in 2013 on suspicion in committing similar offences in that area, said Mr Tait.

The court was told that the Gloucester victim had been seen by a psychiatrist in 1990 with issues over sexual uncertainty. During the course of his consultation he revealed that he had a series of sexual encounters with a school teacher when he was aged 13.

Mr Haynes denied committing any offences against the Gloucester victim. He also maintained he had no recollection of the boy in Leicester and described his account as ‘pure fabrication and lies.’

The Gloucester victim said in his evidence: “I have spent most of my adult life trying to convince myself it didn’t happen. I remember the physical acts from 40 years ago and the location, but little else in detail.”

It emerged during the trial that Haynes had a conviction for indecent assault of a child in 1993. He was found guilty in April 1994 of committing the assault while a teacher at Newlands Manor School at Seaford in Sussex.

He was jailed for this and has not been able to work as a teacher since. His employment subsequently was as an assistant in a book shop.

The Sussex school can be named as it is now longer trading and ceased operations in 2006.

He was found guilty of committing four counts of indecent assault on a male and two counts of indecency with a child.

Controlling sex ‘bully’ who preyed on teenage girl is sentenced

Gary William Jelly (also known as Bollen)

A molester who bullied a teenager into having sex on a regular basis for years has been jailed.

The victim told a jury that Gary William Jelly had effectively “blackmailed” her into suffering the abuse.

Jelly, 52, who formerly used the surname Bollen – and has a previous conviction for manslaughter – befriended the girl more than 15-years-ago and groomed her with cigarettes and money.

When she later refused to cooperate, he put her in fear of violence, including once threatening to put her head though a window.

A jury convicted Jelly of a catalogue of sex offences following a two week trial in February and he appeared at Leicester Crown Court today (April 7), via a live video link from prison for sentencing.

Judge Keith Raynor said the offences included sexual activity in a garden shed, a garage and a caravan.

Jelly took “explicit” photographs of the complainant, some without her knowledge. The images were later used as leverage, in threatening text messages and calls, to enforce her compliance.

When she gave evidence, she said: “It was like I bowed down, pretty much he clicked his fingers.

“He had that much control over me.”

Judge Raynor told Jelly: “The text messages show you as a pathetic middle-aged bully.

“You used your money to get what you wanted and threatened to expose her and show sexual pictures of her to others, including her family.

“You maintained your threats to have a hold over her and wanted her at your beck and call.

“She told you on multiple occasions ‘I’m sick of this blackmail.’

“She needed money on occasions and you preyed on that financial vulnerability.

“On one occasion you threatened to go round and beat her up and on another said you would put her head through a window.

“When she didn’t want to see you, you began stalking her.”

“She suffered significant psychological trauma.”

“Your conduct was to maximize fear and distress, with a high degree of planning and it was persistent action over a prolonged period.”

The judge said he took into account the four year delay in the trial taking place, Jelly’s chronic ill health, including a heart condition and the restrictions in prison regarding Covid-19.

Jelly, formerly of Woodland Road, off Uppingham Road, Leicester, was convicted on majority 11 – 1 verdicts on four counts of sexual activity with a child under 16 and two offences of paying for the sexual services of the same girl, during a 12 month period.

Jelly denied the offences, claiming nothing sexual happened until the complainant was aged 19 and she consented. He gave her cigarettes and money just “to help her out.”

He pleaded guilty to one count of putting the same victim in fear of violence, by “making numerous threats” when she was an adult, between 2013 and 2014.

Prosecutor Richard Thatcher said it was only after many years of feeling ashamed and staying silent, she found the courage to tell her family and finally report the matter.

Judge Raynor today jailed Jelly for a total of eight years and four months.

He was also placed on a 12 year sexual harm prevention order, banning any contact with the victim.

The judge publicly commended officer in the case, Detective Constable Alec Lester, for his “excellent” work including investigating an issue that arose during the trial.

The court heard that in 2017, the defendant received a seven year jail sentence, for an unrelated offence of manslaughter which involved the death of a “vulnerable” 34-year-old woman.

He was on early release licence from that sentence when he stood trial for the sex offences.

Judge Raynor said Jelly’s conviction for the manslaughter – involving him pushing over the victim who died from rib injuries – was “relevant” because he had behaved in a similarly bullying manner towards the sex abuse victim.

He said Jelly told the manslaughter victim during a confrontation: “Don’t mess with me.”

Jelly, then aged 47, and his daughter, Natalie Bollen, then aged 29, were said to have both assaulted a woman, Kelly Machin, following a neighbours’ row over a burst child’s football in August 2016.

The father and daughter, who were both jailed for seven years, confronted Ms Machin at her home in Waldwick Close, Leicester Forest East.

Ms Machin died alone on her living room sofa, from internal bleeding caused by fractured ribs, several days later.

The incident occurred after Ms Machin became so “fed up” with footballs coming over the fence into her garden, from Bollen’s nearby home, that she burst it with a knife before throwing it back.

Bollen became outraged and went round with her father.

The sentencing judge on that occasion observed that three punches from Bollen and a forceful push onto a coffee table by Jelly had unintentionally led to the woman’s death.

Predator abused schoolgirl and threatened to show her family indecent photos

A pervert sexually abused a schoolgirl and then threatened to show her family indecent photographs of her if she did not continue with the activity.

The victim claimed that her abuser, Gary William Jelly effectively “blackmailed” her into providing sex on a regular basis for a decade, from the age of 15.

Jelly – currently on licence from an unrelated manslaughter sentence – befriended the child more than 15 years ago and would give her cigarettes and cash in return for sexual activity.

When she later refused to cooperate he put her in fear of violence, including once threatening to put her head though a window.

A jury of seven men and five women deliberated for several days last week, before announcing the verdicts today, Monday February 15.

Jelly, 52, was convicted, on majority 11 – 1 verdicts, of four counts of sexual activity with a child under 16 and two offences of paying for the sexual services of the same girl, during a 12 month period. He denied the charges.

Jelly, formerly known by the surname of Bollen, had earlier admitted one offence of putting the same victim in fear of violence, by “making numerous threats,” including saying he would attend her home with another person to “beat her up” and on a different occasion threatened to put her head “through a window.”

He entered the guilty plea on the basis it was when the victim was an adult woman, between 2013 and 2014.

The jury was not told during the trial that Jelly received a seven year jail sentence, in 2017, for a completely unrelated offence of manslaughter which involved the death of a “vulnerable” 34-year-old woman.

The prosecutor in the child sex offence trial, Richard Thatcher, told the jury that the defendant befriended the 15-year-old schoolgirl and would create situations to be alone with her, using cigarettes and money as a reward for repeated under-aged sexual activity, including intercourse.

The offences were committed in various places including inside the defendant’s van, in a caravan and also a garden shed, the court was told.

Giving evidence in his defence, Jelly, formerly of Woodland Road, off Uppingham Road, Leicester, claimed nothing sexual happened until the complainant was a 19-year-old adult – and it was all fully consensual.

Jelly said he had gave her payment for sex when she was an adult – which was not illegal – and claimed he also gave her cigarettes and cash to “help her out” when she was short of money.

Mr Thatcher said the victim “in her own words” described the defendant as “blackmailing” her into continuing the sexual activity in adulthood by threatening to show her family sexual photographs he had previously taken of her, to ensure their encounters continued – although Jelly was not prosecuted for blackmail.

After years of feeling ashamed and staying silent, she told her family and finally reported the matter.

Following the verdicts, Judge Keith Raynor ordered the preparation of a pre-sentence report – to address the question of dangerousness.

He remanded Jelly into custody to await sentencing next month.

‘Stupid’ pervert caught with sick child abuse video in Rushden

A man told police he was ‘stupid’ after he was caught with a depraved video of child abuse in Rushden.

David Knighton initially denied all knowledge having sick files in his possession after he was arrested last year.

But he later admitted his vile actions and was placed on the register for sex offenders on Monday (February 8).

Northampton Magistrates’ Court heard police attended an address in Abbotts Way on January 25 after they received intelligence from Kik Messenger.

The 51-year-old was arrested and denied knowledge of having images of child abuse and handed his phone and tablet to officers.

But when his devices were examined police found one category A indecent video – the worst category possible – and four category C indecent images.

He later admitted his actions and pleaded guilty to two charges of making indecent images of children.

Prosecuting, Sukhy Singh said: “He said that he was stupid and that he was not a risk to children.”

The court heard Knighton, now of Waterloo Caravan Park near Market Harborough, had no previous convictions and had never been in trouble with the police before.

No mitigation or explanation for his behaviour was heard in court after magistrates said they were minded to follow a sentencing recommendation from probation officers.

Chairman of the bench Deborah Smith told Knighton: “You are previously a man of good character.

“It’s disappointing that you appear before us today in this courthouse.”

Knighton was sentenced to a two-year community order with rehabilitation activities and must complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

He will be on the register for sex offenders for five years and must pay court costs of £85, as well as a surcharge to fund victim services of £90.

Police praise ‘brave’ rape victim for bringing culprit to justice

A woman raped by a man visiting her home been praised by the police for her bravery in reporting the attack and bringing the offender to justice.

Jamie Russell, 31, went to the victim’s home on a social visit in August 2018 and they both drank alcohol. The court was told it was just hours after his then long term partner gave birth to their twins.

When the woman fell into an intoxicated sleep he removed her clothing and began having sex with her

She was deeply shocked on waking up in the early hours of the morning, to discover the defendant was having sex and immediately stopped him.

The victim had to give evidence in court as Russell, of Rancliffe Crescent, Braunstone, Leicester, denied rape, claiming it was consensual.

A jury at the city’s crown court convicted Russell on a 10 – 2 majority verdict.

He was jailed for six years.
