Sittingbourne teacher, 66, downloaded child abuse images while planning lessons for primary school pupils

A teacher downloaded child abuse images while planning lessons for his primary school pupils, a court has heard today.

Michael Hardgrave, now retired, confessed to police following his arrest in June last year that he was “interested” in knowing how children looked when naked but denied being sexually attracted to them.

However, search terms used by the 66-year-old included words such as “jailbait”, “tiny lolita”, and “schoolgirl princess” Maidstone Crown Court heard on June 30.

A total of 795 images across all three categories of seriousness were found on a laptop and hard drive

Hardgrave, from Sittingbourne admitted six offences of making and possessing indecent images of children.

Prosecutor Alexander Williams told the court Hardgrave admitted when interviewed by police in February this year to watching child ‘porn’ but could not remember when that had started or the last occasion.

“He claimed in his work as a teacher, from which he was retired, he had a bad work-life balance,’ said Mr Williams.

“He would spend nights planning lessons for his primary school children the next day and would look at images of children being abused while doing his work.

Hardgrave was given a six-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months, with 40 rehabilitation activity sessions.

He will be subject to a sexual harm prevention order and required to sign on the sex offender register, both for 10 years, and barred indefinitely from working with children.

Convicted Rainham rapist avoids jail after breaching court order four times

A convicted rapist – who began a secret affair with the mother of a young child has avoided a prison sentence – despite his fourth breach of a court order.

Wayne Adams, 52, had tried to strangle a 19-year-old stranger, who he attacked as she was walking home in Rainham in 1996.

But a “clerical error” meant he wasn’t arrested for eight years. He was eventually given a 12-year jail term after admitting the offences.

The judge at the time said the attack was “inhumane and wicked”.

Now Adams, of Boundary Road, Chatham has avoided returning to prison despite admitting two charges of breaching rules designed to allow police to monitor where he lives.

Maidstone Crown Court heard how in November 2020 he had begun a romantic relationship with a mother of a young child living on the Isle of Wight.

The court order restricted how many nights he could spend away from his Kent home without authorities being alerted.

The mother later told officers that Adams had stayed with her “for at least 15 nights”.

Prosecutor John Livingston said: “She also revealed she has a very young child, living in the same house… although Adams was never left unsupervised with the child.”

He said that when Adams house was searched, officers discovered a ferry ticket to the Isle and a receipt.

“He was in breach of requirements to notify police of any address where he stayed for seven consecutive days in a 12-month period, ” he added.

Officers also found a credit card which Adams had but kept kept secret from police.

Adams told police he hadn’t alerted them to his trips to the Isle of Wight because he had kept his romance a secret and he had “forgotten” about the credit card.

The court heard it was his fourth breach of the regulations, following infringements in 2013 and 2018.

The Judge, Recorder Alistair Webster QC, told him he had breached the notification requirements imposed after the “extremely serious rape of a stranger and strangulation” in 2005.

He added: “These court requirements are imposed for good reasons to protect members of the public from someone who, in the past, showed himself to be a danger.

“You took a quite deliberate decision to lie about the relationship on the Isle of Wight.

“You have escaped an immediate jail sentence by the skin of your teeth… it won’t happen again.”

He received a four-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, was fined £850 and ordered to pay £500 court costs

Adams wasn’t arrested for the earlier rape and attack despite giving a DNA sample which matched police evidence.

Jail for Romney Marsh man who tried to meet children online

A man who tried to meet children through the internet has been jailed for more than four years.

Robert Reddin was arrested at his home in St Mary’s Bay, Romney Marsh in 2018 during an investigation into indecent images of children.

Inquiries by Kent Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team also uncovered sexual messages he had sent to people he believed to be children.

Reddin, 70, was charged with and later admitted multiple offences, including attempting to arrange the commission of a child sex offence, attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and making indecent photos of children.

Yesterday, at Canterbury Crown Court, he was jailed for four-and-a-half years and made the subject of a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which will limit his access to the internet on release.

Police who carried out a search warrant at Reddin’s home on June 11 2018, found indecent images of children on his laptop computer.

Further investigation found a series of chats Reddin had with people who identified themselves as children as young as 11, and adults who he hoped would help him to meet children.

The content of the conversations was sexual and Reddin had encouraged them to engage in sexual acts, send him pictures and to meet him.

Medway paedophile jailed after abusing child for two years in Rochester

A paedophile who sexually abused a young child for more than two years has been jailed.

Graeme Mulock, from Strood, carried out the prolonged campaign against his victim until police launched an investigation in December 2018.

The 65-year-old of Yantlet Drive denied the allegations when he was interviewed.

But a court heard Mulock had been responsible for the abuse from December 1, 2016 until Christmas Day in 2018.

He carried out his abuse on the victim three times in the Rochester area.

Mulock denied the charges against him – four sexual offences and two counts of sexual assault of a child – but was found guilty by a jury after a trial at Maidstone Crown Court.

He was convicted on last Thursday and sentenced to prison for three years and six months the following day at the same court.

He will be put on the sex offenders register for life.
