Man spared jail over indecent child images and extreme pornography

A 39-year-old Lower Slaughter man caught with indecent images of children as well as extreme pornography involving animals was handed a suspended jail term on Thursday (May 6) and ordered to do unpaid work for the community.

Donald Godfrey of Fosse Way, Lower Slaughter, pleaded guilty at Gloucester Crown Court to possessing 70 images and videos of children. He also admitted having 19 extreme pornography images.

Prosecutor Ehsanul Oarith told the court that on March 18 last year, police received information that someone at Godfrey’s address was uploading indecent images on Kik.

Two devices were seized from him – an iPhone and an iPad which were linked to a Dropbox account from which the illegal images were recovered.

Mr Oarith said the images and videos involved children aged between 6 and 16. As well as still images there was a total of 39mins of film, he added.

The defence said Godfrey was a man of previous good character apart from a drink-drive offence.

His illegal activity had lasted for about three months, a comparatively short period, and his arrest had led to him ‘seeking help from various quarters,’ his lawyer said.

The judge, Recorder James Waddington QC, told Godfrey: “I give you full credit for owning up at the second police interview and pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity.

“I can also afford you a little bit more credit, although not a great deal, for your good character apart from your excess alcohol conviction.”

Godfrey was sentenced to seven months jail suspended for two years and ordered to do 150 hours of unpaid work.

He must attend up to thirty rehabilitation activity days and pay £425 costs.

A five year sexual harm prevention order was imposed on Godfrey.

Gareth Godfrey – Wisbech/Gloucester

Pervert filmed himself having sex with girl, 14, and then shared video online

A 48-year-old pervert from Wisbech who filmed himself having sex with a 14-year-old girl and then shared the video online has been jailed for more than three years.

When a Kik chatroom viewer who saw the video asked Gareth Godfrey where it came from, he replied that it was him in the film – and that the teenager shown giving him oral sex was ‘a good girl.’

The video showed the girl kneeling on the floor with her hands behind her back while Godfrey penetrated her mouth, Gloucester Crown Court was told.

Godfrey, who was living in Gloucester at the time of his offences but is now of Stow Road, Wisbech, was sentenced to a total of three years and three months imprisonment.

He admitted two charges of taking indecent photos, two of distributing them and one of making indecent images.

The offences were committed between August 2017 and February 2018, said prosecutor Giles Nelson.

Godfrey’s crimes were uncovered when police were investigating him grooming a fourteen-year-old girl for sexual activity

He was never prosecuted for that offence, however, because he maintained that he thought she was sixteen and the girl herself did not assist the police with the case against him.

He was arrested in Gloucester on February 18, 2018 and his phone and iPad were seized, said Mr Nelson.

On them a number of indecent images of the girl were found – 58 Category A pictures and 8 videos (the most serious kind) and 32 Category C stills and three videos.

The police also found evidence of his conversations with other chatroom users about the sexual abuse of young children, said the prosecutor.

Interviewed by the police, Godfrey said chats with young girls were part of an online sexual fantasy.

“He admitted that some of the chat was shocking and disgusting,” said the barrister.

“Some of the conversation was about children who had just been born and were still attached to their mothers. It is undoubtedly depraved.”

Jailing Godfrey, Judge Ian Lawrie QC said “He was clearly active in striving to communicate with females to further his interest in sex with children and eventually meet with a view to achieving sexual contact.”

The judge added “The sentence must reflect the fact Mr Godfrey has a persistent sexual interest in sex with children.

“Over several months he moved from viewing such images to communicating with mothers with the stated intention, if able to meet, of having sex with a child.

“A number of the Class A images confirm this interest.

“I have reviewed whether Mr. Godfrey should be considered for an extended sentence because

“I do take the view that his overall actions raise the issue as to dangerousness in terms of potential harm to children.

“Whilst I am of the view Mr. Godfrey is potentially dangerous I am satisfied I have sufficient power to punish him via a determinative sentence.

“These offences are cumulatively so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified.”

Paedophile school caretaker who collected 1041 indecent images

A paedophile school caretaker who collected over one thousand indecent images of children has been spared an immediate jail term.

Former Oakhurst Community Primary School worker Colin Jones, 56, appeared before Swindon Magistrates’ Court in April where he admitted three counts of possessing incident images.

The defendant, of Greenhill Drive, Gloucester, attempted to access illegal websites whilst working at the school in February last year. As a result, the activity flagged up and the school alerted the police.

A subsequent raid on his home by officers uncovered 1041 prohibited images, including: 201 in category A (involving penetrative sexual activity), 212 in category B (non-penetrative sexual activity) and in category C images (indecent images not falling within categories A or B).

At Swindon Crown Court today, he was given a nine-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to participate in rehabilitation, unpaid work and was given a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

Paedophile caught after trying to access child porn on primary school computer

A paedophile tried to access child abuse images on a primary school computer, a court heard.

Former caretaker Colin Jones, 56, appeared before magistrates in Swindon this morning charged with the possession of 1041 indecent images of children.

The court heard the defendant, of Greenhill Drive, Gloucester, attempted to access illegal websites on a computer at Oakhurst Community Primary School in February last year. As a result, the activity flagged up and the school alerted the police.

Officers then raided Jones’ home, believed to have been in the Swindon area, and located a number of digital devices. They were seized for examination.

1041 indecent images were found by investigators. 201 were category A (involving penetrative sexual activity), 212 were category B (non-penetrative sexual activity) and 628 were category C images (indecent images not falling within categories A or B).

Prosecutor Elizabeth Cox told the court that the images were involving a large number of different victims and many depicted the sexual abuse of very young children.

Jones admitted the offences; he has no previous convictions.

Sophie Howard, defending, asked for the case to be sentenced in the magistrates’ court.

However, magistrates decided that due to the incident occurring in a primary school, the case should be dealt with by the crown court. The case was adjourned until May for sentencing.

Cirencester man, 56, who downloaded child abuse images avoids jail

A 56-year-old Cirencester man who admitted possessing 17 indecent images and videos of underage girls has walked free from court with a three year community order instead of being jailed for eight months.

Prosecutor Alec Small told Gloucester Crown Court yesterday (March 29) that Gloucestershire police received information from the National Crime Agency in May 2019 that indecent images of children were been accessed to the Kik messenger service from an IP address located at Martin Toomer’s home in Lewis Lane, Cirencester.

“Mr Toomer was arrested on June 17, 2019 following the execution of a search warrant. Toomer initially denied using Kik and denied accessing any indecent images,” said the barrister.

“Toomer’s home was searched and three items were seized – two laptops and a mobile phone. However he was too ill to be interviewed by police and was taken to hospital suffering from high blood pressure.

“After Toomer’s computers had been examined, the police found two category A images, the most serious category, seven images and two videos of category B and six in category C.

“He was interviewed in July 2020 and he maintained that at the time he had been under the influence of prescription drugs and that he wasn’t the only person using the three devices and he had no knowledge of the indecent images.”

The court heard that a number of pictures were on a computer that had not been accessed since 2016.

The court was told that in July 2000 Toomer had previously been jailed for two years for distribution of indecent images of young children.

Toomer admitted making and possessing 17 indecent images of a child between April 13, 2010 and June 8, 2019 in categories A, B and C.

Recorder Paul Garlick said to Toomer: “Ordinarily these offences should be dealt with by the imposition of an eight month custodial sentence. However, that doesn’t deal with your problems.

“Instead I feel a 36 month community order would be more appropriate as this would be both demanding and would benefit you and society in general.”

The Recorder ordered that Toomer attend 40 programme sessions to deal with his sexual issues and complete 30 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Recorder Garlick also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of all three devices, subjected him to a five year sexual harm prevention order, limiting his use of the internet, and for him to sign the sex offenders’ register for the same time period.

Henry Scott – Bagpath

Cotswold man, 24, jailed for sexually abusing girl, 13

A Cotswold man who sexually abused a 13-year-old girl over a four month period has been jailed for two years and eight months today.

Henry Scott, 24, of Bagpath, near Tetbury, pleaded guilty at Gloucester Crown Court to three charges of having penetrative sex with the girl, engaging in sexual communications with a child and possessing indecent images of the girl in all three categories of seriousness.

The court heard a statement from the girl, now 17, describing how Scott’s abuse has left her suffering panic attacks, poor sleep and problems with concentrating on GCSE studies at school. She said she felt like a ‘bomb had gone off’ in her life.

The court was told that when arrested Scott denied any sexual activity with the girl. The offences occurred between February 2018 and May 2018.

In a statement, the girl said: “This is something that has caused a ripple effect throughout my entire family.

“This past year has been so difficult that I have not been able to focus on anything because I knew this case was pending.

“I used to be happy, confident but I became so withdrawn that I doubted my own ability that I would be unable to succeed at anything in life.

“I am standing up for myself so this cannot happen to another child. This kind of crime ruins lives and I feel that my teenage years have been tainted by what he has done.

“I am lucky to have a supportive family and I hope we all get through this together in time.”

Katherine Blackwell, defending, said: “Scott should have known better. He had been warned about socialising with people under the age of 16.

“Scott has been diagnosed with having autism spectrum disorder which causes problems with social interaction and communication.

“He has also been diagnosed with pathological demand disorder which means he is unable to understand boundaries. He is unaware what is, and what isn’t acceptable.”

Judge Ian Lawrie QC told Scott: “You were aged 21/22 when these offences were committed. These nine offences were regular and consistent while the victim was aged between 13 and 14.

“One of my concerns is that you were cautioned seven months prior to these offences for meeting up with a 13-year-old girl on a number of occasions and being warned not to do so in April 2016.

“I accept that you have been diagnosed with a number of medical problems which means you have borderline cognitive function which leads you to being child-like and immature.”

The judge sentenced Scott to two years and eight months imprisonment and subjected him to a sexual harm prevention order for seven years as well as a order to sign the sex offenders’ register for the same period.
