South Ockendon paedophile had 250 child abuse images

MORE than 200 pictures of child abuse were by chance found on a paedophile’s devices when he was arrested for another matter.

Police officers had seized mobile phones, DVDs and CDs from the home of 56 year-old David Johnson in April 2018 after he had been arrested in connection with an unrelated offence.

When the phones and discs were examined almost 250 images of child sexual abuse material were found.

He was later charged and at Basildon Crown Court admitted three counts of possessing indecent images of children and two counts of making indecent images of children.

Johnson, of Buckles Lane, South Ockendon, was jailed for 13 months, given a ten year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years.

Wickford paedophile, 78, jailed for historic abuse of girl

A paedophile who sexually abused a young girl in Wickford has been jailed for two years.

Michael Cantwell was locked up for the indecent assault of a child during the 1990s.

The 78-year-old of Meadow Court, Wickford, had denied two counts against him but he was unanimously convicted by a jury of five men and seven women at Basildon Crown Court.

The victim, a girl aged under 13 at the time, told police that Cantwell made her perform a sex act on him and he performed sex acts on himself while she was in the room.

The victim did not report the crimes at the time, but found the courage to approach the police about the incident in September 2018.

The woman was interviewed by police and gave full accounts of Cantwell’s abuse, which she admitted left her in tears.

During the trial’s opening, Joanne Eley, prosecuting, told the jury: “She [the victim] goes on to say she was such a young child and did not know what it was.

“But as she got older, she now appreciates what he was doing.”

The victim went on to say that the incident “was just horrible”.

Clacton sex offender jailed

A sex offender from Clacton has been jailed.

Simon Chilton was convicted last week of a string of sexual offences against two children who he abused between 2013 and 2018.

The 36 year-old, formerly of Glover Close, Clacton, was arrested after the offences came to light in November 2018.

Specialist detectives from Essex Police’s child abuse investigation team carried out a thorough investigation and supported the victims, including utilising new measures which meant they did not have to give evidence at his trial.

Following a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, Chilton was found guilty of seven counts of rape, six counts of sexual assault, four counts of sexual assault by penetration, and one count of assault by beating.

At the same court today (14 May) he was jailed for 21 years with an additional year on licence.

Southend paedophile was snared twice in a year

A paedophile was spared jail only to be caught once again by an undercover officer trying to meet underage girls.

Dean Briggs confessed to police that he is attracted to young girls after he was caught sending explicit messages to profiles online.

The 50-year-old, of Tickfield Avenue, Southend, was given a sexual harm prevention order and a suspended sentence last year for identical offences.

But between February 23 and March 2 this year he sent further messages to a profile claiming to be a 13-year-old girl.

When she declared her age, Briggs replied “13 is cool, I really want a young girlfriend.”

After further sexual messages were sent to the profile, police decided to arrest Briggs, and he was taken into custody on March 11

His home was searched and phones were seized, which were found to have their history removed and messages wiped, which Briggs was banned from doing by his court order.

He later admitted attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court.

Recorder Leslie Cuthbert, sitting at Basildon Crown Court, gave Briggs a three-year community order with 60 days of rehabilitation.

Tilbury man fantasised about chaining up child as ‘sex slave’

A man from Essex and his partner have been jailed after they sexually abused an eight-year-old girl.

Robert Stanley, 36, from Tilbury and his partner Danielle Schofield, 34, from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire were put behind bars after a National Crime Agency investigation.

The investigation found that the pair had also fantasised about kidnapping, gagging and keeping a child chained up as their ‘sex slave’.

In April 2020 the NCA started investigating Stanley after intelligence indicated that he had accessed three Category A (the most serious) child abuse videos.

Stanley, unemployed, of Feenan Highway, was arrested by officers at Schofield’s home in Centenary Square, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire on April 23, 2020.

Stanley was released on conditional bail while the investigation continued.

The investigation also found that the pair had a video call during which Schofield sexually abused an eight-year-old girl.

During the horrific abuse, Stanley took screenshots to use for his gratification after he encouraged and incited Schofield.

Forensic examination of Stanley’s mobile phone showed he had also sent Schofield a Category B indecent image of a child. She was subsequently arrested on May 20, 2020 and released on conditional bail while the NCA’s investigation continued.

Officers then discovered that the pair had disturbing conversations about child abuse, and also discussed alleged previous abuse of the girl and plotted future abuse.

Evidence of four Category B images were found on Stanley’s phone including two screenshots he took of the video call where Schofield abused the eight-year-old girl who NCA officers identified and safeguarded.

They were both once again arrested on September 30, 2020 for serious child sexual offences and remanded in custody.

At Bradford Crown Court the couple faced the judge and admitted to arranging/facilitating the commission of a child sex offence, sexual assault of a child under the age of 13, taking indecent images of children and distributing indecent images of children.

Yesterday (Friday, April 23) they were jailed for a total of seven years and 10 months.

Stanley was handed a four-and-a-half year sentence and Schofield three years and four months.

They must also both sign the sex offenders register for life and were given sexual harm prevention orders
