Man jailed for life over attacks in Bournemouth

A sex predator has been handed a life sentence for attacking three females in a night of violence in Bournemouth.

Mark Robert Williams stabbed two of his victims in the neck as part of an “horrendous series of offences”.

The 37-year-old previously admitted two counts of attempted murder, two counts of false imprisonment, committing grievous bodily harm with intent and sexual assault by penetration.

A sentencing hearing at Winchester Crown Court was told that Williams, of Cecil Road, Bournemouth, had previously been jailed for offences of attempted rape and rape, dating back to 2008 and 2009, respectively.

The Honourable Mr Justice Neil Garnham described the offences on the night of Thursday, February 18, this year and into the early hours of Friday, February 19, as “barbaric” in a “truly dreadful case”.

Williams must serve a minimum term of 14 years before he can considered for release on licence by the Parole Board.

Prosecutor Rob Welling said the defendant had been arrested at his home address earlier on February 18 on suspicion of distributing indecent images of children.

Mr Welling said Williams had a phone with internet access which he had no informed police about.

As a result he was in breach of a lifelong licence condition following release from his term of imprisonment for the rape and attempted rape offences.

However, he was not detained in police custody and instead taking back to his flat.

Williams gathered tape, cable ties and a large knife into a draw string bag.

Mr Welling said it would seem the defendant had the intention of hurting somebody but at that stage it was not known who.

Dorset Police received a report of a stabbing at an address in the Charminster area of at 8.08pm.

Officers attended and located a woman aged in her 40s with a cut to her throat and abdomen, as well as a puncture wound to her thigh. A teenage girl who was also present at the address had a cut across her cheek.

One of the victims told officers at the scene that a man Williams – had attended the address and attacked them, tied them up, gagged them and threatened to kill them.

The teenage girl was sexually assaulted by Williams.

The court heard that during this incident the defendant told his victims he was “dangerous” and that he should never have been released from prison previously.

Williams turned the television on loud to drown out cries for help before leaving his victims locked in the property without their mobile phones.

They managed to break free of the restraints using scissors before seeking help.

Body-worn camera from the first police officer to enter the address was played in court.

The prosecutor described the scene as “harrowing”.

The woman was flown to hospital by air ambulance in a life-threatening condition and the girl was taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries.

At 11.59pm on the same day officers were called to reports of a woman screaming in Vale Road.

Williams had repeatedly stabbed her in the throat before leaving the scene.

The victim – a woman aged in her 30s – was found with a laceration to her throat. She was flown by air ambulance to hospital and required surgery due to the severity of her injuries.

Officers located Williams who was covered in blood and acting strangely in Old Christchurch Road.

As a police car pulled alongside him on the pavement, he fell to his knees, put his hands out and told officers he was they man they were looking for.

Having been arrested, he gave full accounts of what took place in interview and he was subsequently charged.

Williams entered the guilty pleas at a Bournemouth Crown Court hearing on March 29.

Mr Justice Garnham ruled that the defendant was a dangerous offender, telling him he had “absolutely no doubt that you meet the criteria for dangerousness”.

Man in court for indecent child images and extreme porn

A man who was caught with a haul of indecent images of children and extreme pornography has avoided a custodial sentence.

Over a 10-year period Stanislaw Lenartowicz downloaded hundreds of child abuse images and videos but he told officers he “gained no sexual gratification from children”.

Police were alerted to the 65-year-old after intelligence suggested a computer was accessing an online chat site, which was believed was being used to access child pornography.

Officers searched two properties linked to the defendant in 2017. Devices were seized and material was found following a “considerable period of time” to go through the equipment.

He was charged last year and eventually sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court earlier this month.

Lenartowicz pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing indecent images of children, one count of possessing extreme pornography and one count of possessing a prohibited image of a child.

Tim Bradbury, prosecuting, said police executed a warrant at Lenartowicz’s home in Beaconsfield Road, Christchurch, on September 18, 2017.

It had been reported to police that a computer at the address had been used to access online chat site Chatstep.

Mr Bradbury said this platform was of concern to police and it was accessible without having to register or make an account.

The defendant was not at home when police carried out the search warrant and a large number of computer hardware was recovered, including laptops, computer hard-drives and USB sticks.

A subsequent search was carried out at a property where the defendant also lived in Worcester Park, Surrey, and more equipment was seized.

Lenartowicz was arrested and cooperative with police by providing passwords to the devices. He was de-arrested and voluntarily interviewed the following day. The court heard that he told officers he went online to access adult pornography only.

“He found the idea (of child pornography) disgusting and he said he didn’t believe there would be an images (of children) on his computer,” said Mr Bradbury.

The prosecutor said a number of the seized devices were found to have indecent images of children.

Some of the same images were found on multiple devices, with some still accessible and others deleted.

Mr Bradbury said there were 45 category A images (the most serious), 33 category B images and 1,307 category C images, along with extreme pornography and a prohibited image of a child.

The defendant was interviewed again in January of last year due to what had been found.

Lenartowicz now made admissions, stating he was in the habit of downloading pornography. The court heard he showed remorse for his behaviour, telling police: “If I did it, I did it.”

“He denied he had any interest in children or gained any sexual gratification from children,” said Mr Bradbury.

The barrister said the case involved possessing and downloading images, not sharing or uploading them.

Judge Stephen Climie said there was a realistic prospect of rehabilitation.

He told the defendant those who view child abuse images are as much a part of the abuse as those who are “inflicting the pain and suffering of the child” and warned him: “You are going to be kept under the courts eye, one way or another, for the next five years.”

Lenartowicz was issued with a three-year community order, with a four-month overnight curfew and up to 40 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

He was also issued with a sexual harm prevention order and placed on the sex offenders register for five years.

Dorset man sentenced after repeatedly beating puppy to the head

A man from Dorset who was seen beating an eight-month-old puppy outside a store has been banned from owning an animal for up to five years.

Martin Thomas admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and failing to ensure the needs of an animal for which he was responsible were met.

The act happened around 6pm on February 12 when officers were called to reports of a man beating his Husky dog by repeatedly punching it in the head outside Tesco Express on Bournemouth Road.

Thomas, aged 37, of Bournemouth Road, Poole, was sentenced at Poole Magistrates’ Court on Monday (26 April).

After enquiries were carried out, officers located Thomas at his address nearby and due to the concerns that had been raised the dog was seized using powers under the Animal Welfare Act.

It was then taken to a vet, where is was confirmed the dog had sustained bruising

Officers carried out further enquiries and obtained CCTV, which showed the defendant beating his eight-month-old puppy repeatedly to the head – causing it to urinate and defecate over the pavement outside the store.

Thomas was interviewed and subsequently charged with the animal welfare offences.

He was originally due to appear at court on April 16, but failed to attend and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

The warrant was executed on April 25 and he appeared at court the following day.

Thomas was sentenced to a 12-month community order, with a requirement to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work in the community and a 14-day rehabilitation activity requirement. He was also ordered to pay compensation totalling more than £1,300 toward vets and animal rescue bills.

Thomas was also made the subject of an order under section 34 of the Animal Welfare Act, prohibiting him from keeping animals for five years. He is not able to apply to terminate the order for at least three years.

The court passed a further order under section 35 of the Animal Welfare Act that enabled the dog to be taken into the care of Dorset Police.

Police Constable Hillier, Dorset Police’s Dog Legislation Officer, said: “Thanks to the outstanding investigation work of the officers involved in this case, we were able to quickly identify Martin Thomas as the man responsible for this violent assault on a defenceless animal so he could be brought before the court and held accountable for his actions.

“I would also like to thank the RSPCA for its advice and guidance during this complex case.

“Finally, I want to praise the local animal rescue charity which has looked after the dog while the investigation took place. The dog will now be matched to a suitable new home so it can live the life it deserves, free from the fear of unnecessary suffering.”

Bournemouth man sexually assaulted paramedic in ambulance

A man who sexually assaulted a paramedic and threatened to slit a supermarket worker’s throat has been jailed for 14 months.

Stephen Jones intentionally touched the emergency worker in an ambulance after he had made lewd comments to her.

Jones, 49, was sentenced at Bournemouth Crown Court for a string of offences, which included threats of violence, theft and criminal damage.

The court heard paramedics had responded to a 999 call from Jones in September last year saying he was concerned about a white substance – illicit drugs – he had taken.

When they arrived at his location in Bournemouth he denied making the call but the ambulance crew offered to drive him home.

In the ambulance Jones made sexual remarks, which included asking the female paramedic to perform a sex act on him.

Despite being told to stop, he continued and the paramedic, who was in the back of the ambulance with the defendant, went to put her head through the hatch to ask her colleague to park so Jones could be removed from the vehicle.

While she was doing this, Jones pushed himself against her from behind, touching her sexually. After leaving the ambulance, he made thrusting gestures as the emergency workers drove away.

Prosecuting, Robert Harding said that in a statement the paramedic said “we do not expect to get treated in this manner”.

On November 28, Jones, of Canford Avenue, Bournemouth, made a threat to slit the throat of a female member of staff at Tesco in Wallisdown Road.

Mr Harding said: “This was obviously terrifying for an employee of a Tesco convenience store.”

Six days later the defendant damaged a window and was abusive to staff at Talbot Medical Centre.

On December 26 and 28 he stole from the Tesco store on three occasions, taking Fosters beer and sandwiches.

His final crime on New Year’s Eve, again at Tesco, saw him tell another female member of staff that he would “slice her face open”.

Jones admitted charges of two public order offences, three thefts, common assault, sexual assault and criminal damage.

While Judge Robert Pawson was passing sentence, Jones, who appeared by video link from custody, said: “I feel embarrassed, I feel disgusted. I am 49 years old, not nine years old.”

Noting the seriousness of the sexual assault the judge said: “You had been warned off already. Your victim was an emergency worker in an ambulance. She was at work, she was trying to help you.”

The judge said Jones’s offending was “slightly perplexing” as he had not been in trouble with the law until “very recently”.

The defendant’s drug habit and his refusal to stop taking crack cocaine was a key element in what had happened, Judge Pawson added.

A report from the probation service said Jones was not manageable in the community.

Alongside his prison sentence, he was placed on the sex offender’s register.

Poole man jailed after being found guilty of child sex crimes

A pervert has been jailed after being found guilty of child sex offences.

Stephen David Camp was convicted of two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13 and assault of a child under 13 by penetration.

The verdict from the jury, which related to offences in 2013 and 2014, came after a trial at Bournemouth Crown Court.

On Friday, April 9, at the same court, Judge Robert Pawson jailed Camp, 66 and of Whatleigh Close, Poole, for eight years, with a further one year on licence.

The defendant was placed on the sex offenders register for life and issued with a restraining order, which was made until further order.

Judge Pawson said the sentence was underwritten by the need for the public to be protected.
