Royal Mail worker’s entry in to “vile world” of animal and child abuse images ‘was final straw that wrecked his marriage’

Royal Mail worker Nigel Glover’s entry into the ‘vile world’ of child and animal porn was the final straw that wrecked his marriage, a court heard today.

The 65 year old grandad, formerly of Grisedale Close, Longlevens, but now of Heathville Road, Gloucester, downloaded about 1,500 illegal images and was caught thanks to Russian law enforcement officers, Gloucester Crown Court was told.

His use of a peer to peer network was spotted by the Russian officials and reported to British police – which led to a dawn raid on Glover’s home on March 26 last year. He candidly admitted when police arrived that he had illegal images on computers in his home-office.

Glover pleaded guilty to eleven charges of making or possessing indecent images of children or extreme pornography involving animals and was sentenced to 12 months jail suspended for two years.

Recorder Stephen Hall also placed him under supervision for 18 months and ordered him to do 120 hours of unpaid work. The Recorder ordered forfeiture and destruction of his computer equipment and made a ten year sexual offences prevention order.

Prosecutor Frances Willmott said 39 still pictures and 13 videos found on Glover’s computers were the worst Category A – showing penetrative sexual activity with children.. There were 77 stills and 4 videos at category B and 1,406 still and 3 moving images at the least serious category C.

One charge related to sexual activity involving a dog.

Another 2,467 ‘inidcative images’ of children – those that were not in themselves indecent – were also found.

Ms Willmott said Glover had no previous criminal convictions and worked on a casual basis for Royal Mail.

He was married with two children and a baby grandson.

Tim Burrows, defending, said the vast majority of the images Glover had were at the least serious level and he had in fact found the Category A images of abuse of children to be ‘uncomfortable’ to view.

“It would be wrong for me to say this has destroyed his marriage because it was in difficulties at any event,” he said. “But once these offences came to light he and his wife separated – this was the final straw in the marriage.

“He has had to tell his family. That has caused him considerable difficulties although I am pleased to say his children are increasingly supportive and his daughter, who has recently given birth, is very keen to maintain contact with him.”

Glover had sought help from the Lucy Faithfull Foundation to help him understand the reason for his offences and he intended to continue doing so, the solicitor added.

Passing sentence Recorder Hall said some of the images were ‘vicious and corrupting’ and Glover had entered into a ‘vile world’ by downloading them.

Man admits possession of 1,500 child abuse images

More than 1,500 images of child abuse were found on a man’s computer, a court heard.

Nigel Hilary Glover admitted 11 charges relating to downloading child and animal pornography on the internet, when he appeared before Stroud Magistrates’ Court.

Graham Dono, prosecuting, said 38 category A – the most serious – images were found on his computer.

“There were more than 1,500 overall, and the majority were category C,” he told the court on Monday, October 20.

Illegal pornography has been reclassified in law – whereas level five was the most serious and one the least, category A is now the most serious and C the least.

He admitted a charge of possessing 38 category A images and 12 category A video files, another charge of possessing 79 category B images and four category B videos, and possessing 1,421 category C images and two category C videos, between January 29, 2013 and March 26, 2014.

Between the same dates he also had in his possession an extreme pornographic image of a dog.

He admitted six specimen charges of making – downloading – indecent images of children and one charge of possessing a prohibited image of a child.

Glover, 65, formerly of Grisedale Close, Longlevens but now of Heathville Road, Gloucester, will appear for sentence before Gloucester Crown Court on November 28.
