Family man jailed for schoolboy rape

A MARRIED man was jailed for seven years yesterday for raping and sexually assaulting a young boy in the 1990s.

Martin Quinn (42), an unemployed family man, from Canal Walk, Athy, Co Kildare, pleaded guilty to seven charges involving rape and indecent assault on dates from 1990 to 1992.

Mr Justice Carney at the Central Criminal Court said there had been a gross breach of trust involved in which Quinn had corrupted a young boy after engaging in a process of grooming.

He said he took into account the evidence that Quinn looked after his wheelchair-bound wife and his children very well and were it not for that, he might have imposed an 11-year sentence.

Mr Justice Carney imposed seven-year terms for the rape charges and concurrent four-year terms for the indecent assaults. He certified Quinn as a sex offender and directed that he undergo five years post-release supervision.

He said that, by his guilty plea, Quinn saved the victim from having to give evidence.

Consequently, he suspended the final 18 months of the sentence.

The victim told the court that Quinn’s actions had ruined his life.
