Darts champ faces jail for sexual abuse

A PUB darts champion is facing jail after being found guilty of sexually abusing a child for three years.

Roy Bland, captain of the darts team at the Garibaldi in Mill Street, Redhill, was convicted last Friday of two offences of indecent assault and one of sexual assault.

The girl, who is now 16, told Guildford Crown Court: “He would bribe me to go to his home and then he would abuse me.”

The offences took place when the girl was between 9 and 12 years old.

Bland would molest her while his partner was working night shifts at Waitrose supermarket in Crawley.

The 58-year-old member of the Redhill and District Men’s Darts League denied all allegations.

Bland said he had helped the girl who, he claimed, was not looked after properly by her own family, and called her an “attention seeker”.

Bland of Hampton Road, South Earlswood, was remanded on bail until April 28 for pre-sentence reports.
