Bailed man admits 81 offences
SEX offender Matthew Green went on a ‘vast’ burglary spree while on bail awaiting trial for offences against two 13-year old girls, a court heard.
Green, 20, formerly of Coltishaw Close, Quedgeley, and now of Severn Road, Cheltenham, committed 81 offences – most house burglaries – Gloucester Crown Court was told.
He was sentenced to a total of six years detention.
He admitted sexual activity with each of the two girls, who are both from Gloucester, and two charges of burgling houses in Selkirk Gardens and Oakbrook Drive, Cheltenham.
He asked for 79 other offences to be taken into consideration.
Prosecutor Charles Thomas said Green’s offences against the girls happened late last year and early this year.
Green was arrested in March and it was while on bail awaiting the sex case he went on the burglary spree, Mr Thomas said.
On August 20 he broke into a house in Selkirk Gardens while the owners were asleep and stole alaptop and phone worth £2,000.
Ten days later he raided a house in Oakbrook Drive.
When arrested he said the burglaries were motivated by his huge debts and told police about the other 79 offences he had committed, Mr Thomas said. The list showed some houses had been raided three times.
Lynne Matthews, defending, said Green suffers from ADHD and had an abusive childhood.
When not taking medication he was incapable of thinking logically or appreciating the effect of his behaviour, she said.
Judge William Hart told Green: “They may have been rather mature 13-year-olds but nonetheless you were 19 and they were 13. The law is there to protect girls not only from predatory men but also from their own incipient immature sexual desires.
“While on bail and awaiting trial for those matters you committed a vast number of house burglaries.”
The judge sentenced him to three years detention for the sex offences and another three years consecutively for the burglaries.
He made an indefinite sex offences prevention order against Green, banning him from working with children or being in the company of girls under 16. He also ordered him to sign the sex offenders register for life.
