Terry Finbar McCann was due to stand trial for rape and acts of gross indecency on two girls who were both under 13. McCann was out on bail and due before Woolwich Magistrates Court, London, when he absconded on July 26, 2001. The ageing monster – who was on the Metropolitan Police’s Most Wanted list – spent five years in Ireland after he left Essex. He was eventually tracked down to a hostel in Waterford in 2004 – more than three years after he fled. Gardai arrested McCann, who went to the High Court in Dublin in an attempt to avoid extradition. McCann’s final appeal was rejected and he was returned to London. McCann was tried in Woolwich Crown Court and received an 18 year sentence. He was told that he will serve at least 12 years – meaning he will not be released until he is 75.
