Ex- Pc indecently assaulted youth

A former Norfolk policeman has been jailed for indecent assault and theft.

Ian Sherring, 33, who was convicted of six indecent assaults on a youth, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court on Wednesday.

Sherring, of Charles Avenue, Norwich, also admitted three offences of stealing police property.

Police discovered the indecent assault offences while investigating the disappearance of equipment. Sherring was jailed for a year.

‘Stringent checks’

Judge Simon Barham told Sherring he would be on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years and banned from working with children indefinitely.

Sherring, who joined the police after serving with the RAF and had two police commendations, claimed the sex acts had been consensual.

Acting Superintendent Steve Fernandes, head of Norfolk police’s professional standards department, said Sherring had undergone stringent checks when he joined the force.

“Norfolk Constabulary is pleased with the conviction of former officer Ian Sherring,” he said.
