Outrage as beast who preyed on girls is jailed

Angry relatives hurled abuse at a child molester as he was jailed for six years.

David Gillan preyed on 11 girls aged between four and 12 during a decade of abuse.

Some of the victims’ relatives screamed “beast” at Gillan, 34, as he was led from the dock at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Gillan, who is married with two children, admitted attempting to rape three youngsters and indecency offences against a further eight between 1988 and April this year.

The abuse first came to light last November when the mother of a five- year-old was worried by remarks her daughter made about Gillan.

The child confided in her mum and when Gillan was questioned by police he made certain admissions.

He was released on bail after being charged but five months later another girl complained about Gillan.

Police then began another investigation and traced other kids who had been abused by him.

Ruth Anderson, prosecuting, said: “He would appear to have told some of the girls details of what he did to other children.”

Defence advocate Jamie Gilchrist said Gillan, of Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, had pleaded guilty to the offences and was appalled at his behaviour.

Lord Coulsfield ordered his name to be placed on the sex offenders’ register.

The grandmother of one of Gillan’s victims said yesterday: “Six years isn’t long enough. He should have got double.

“He stole my granddaughter’s innocence and has made her and the others grow up too quickly.

“He even phoned me at times to say my granddaughter was safe at his house and all the time he was doing terrible things to her.”
